SAFETY AND PClKIt-ROOF LOCK.
Application ied` .Tune 30,
Tor/ZZ'u/iom'it may concern): i y
Be it known that Ldosnri-r (i. iilirimrism, `a eitipcen of the lllnited States, residing; at 1552 riouth llltting Street, city of lPhiladfel- `phia in the county of lhiladelphia and thelock is locked, controlled by an unlock-` ingi ldevice; second, to provide aU safety ri..1 r ifontrolling a safety keyhole lever, making the lock pick-proof andT third, further pro- "vidini: safety slides on both the actual top and bottom ofthe holt to preventunlocking of the bolt when the keyhole is openT Which safety slides are operated inball bearing grooves in the bolt by a controlling; knob and device. 2 V
. 1 attain theseobjects by the mechanism illustrated in the accornpanyingr drawing',
in Which- @fao liig. 1 is a cross section of theoasinp; and
guides for bolts, and a plan view ofthe cn-` tire inside` operating mechanism formingl the safety lock7 constructed as a rim lock. as
i itappears from the side next the object to which it is attached; Fig. 2 is a detailed vertical section `of the rigidly attached 2 guard cylinder and revolving knob which 35 39, and also `locks the bolt 1 when unlocked:

Whichoperates the spur gears 271.28,` 29. and 304controlling` safety slides 1G Iand 1.7` on "both the right (upper) and left (lower)` side of the `bolt 1.; and 4 is a detailed vertical vien7 of the right side ofplate15 fitted in the bolt at the pin tumblers `1&17 and also of the key 4 0. Fig. 5 is aidetailed description `of the left side of the bolt 1 and' of slidelti and spring' 23. Fig. Gis a detailed description lof the right side of bolt 1 and of slide 17 andspring 23. Fig. is a perspective view ofkey4-- 2 `tiiinilar numerals refer to similar parte throughout the several views. 2 The lock is shoyvn in a locked position. `1 is the bolt, 2 is a rigidly attached guard cylinder: for preventing operation of the' knob 9 an d finger or pin 4. in which the stein ly attaclied `guard cylinder and" knob 191e, serial no. aci/,74a
with fixed pin 11 revolves over the notches, slotsor gates 8 by revolving knob 9. Pin Ll passes up the slot past lug and into slot and notch 7,1.inoving tothe right, spring;` and keyhole lever 10 in groove 539 and open-4 ing the keyhole 11a. The knob 9 is held in one of the notches 8 at the bottom of the rigidly attached guard cylinder 2 by the `spiral spring1 (i fined to the stem 3, and can be turned back automatically over .sic-t7 to lug` 5 'when raised from the notch at the end of slot 7 thus releasing` the keyhole lever `notch 21 in bolt 1.
Bolt 1 is locked by pin tumblers 12 forced by spiral springs 13 against head and neck pin tumblers 14- in bolt 1. WVhile in this position, head and neck pin tumblers 12 are held firmly locked by safety slide 17 so cut atthe end Where the pin tuinblers areas to fit around the necks of the pin tnmblers 12.
Safety slide 17 consists of a fiat piece of rnetal one end of which is so cut as to lit aroundv the necks of pin tumblers 12, the other end of which fitted with ball hearings in groove 19 on the right of bolt 17 and ismoved by knob 26 (firmly fixed by strip 241) operating` against its only tooth 4:5 which is kept in constant Contact with spur `rear 28 by means of a .spiralv spring` 3S in as safety slide 17, With the following excepf tions. Safety slide 16 is much shorter than safety slide 17 at the toothed end, has nine teeth4 at one end` and is flat at the other end near plate 15, which end covers up the holesA of plate in bolt 1. The operation of the safety slide 16 is similanto that` Aof 1.7. Safety slide 16 is operated by spur gear 3()` through spur gear 29, Which, in turn, is
operated vby lantern pinion through `knob 26, which also operates spur gears 27 and 28 iin the opposite dire'etion at the same time.
li i) Both safety slides 16 and 17 are fitted with ball bearings 31 in grooves 32 in bolt 1.
Spiral spring 16 ired on post 35 and litted in cut 20 of bolt 1 forces the bolt forward until pin L12 in bolt 1 reaches its limitl post 413 and until pin tumblers 12 are forced by springs 13 into the bolt 1 against pin tumblers lil.
36 are guide posts for the holt 'l ST is the wasting in which boringgs for p i tumblers '12 and spiral springs 123 are made and which serves as a guide for bolt 1; 39 is a casting containing groove 159 for safety keyhole lever 10, and 43 is the limit post for pin -il2 of the bolt 1. All these are parts of the ease or boi: of lthe lock.
The shape of the key nith ends bent at right angles is shon'n by ell).
To open the lock, knob 9 Worked up and down the notches t3 until the slot passingjthrough lugis r ached, then the knob 9 is raised, the pin Ll passing lugl 5 to slot- 'l'. where the turning pin l nioved to the right by turning' knob D, comes in contact With spring 10 attached to the upper end of keyhole lever 10, and moves it to the right causing the end of the keyhole lever 10 in groove 39 to move around the center of spur gear 29 to the right, thus opening?)`|- the keyhole 11a.
The key 4c() is then inserted in the keyhole 11a, but is is prevented from unlocking the bolt 1 until the knob 26 withdraws the safety slide 16 in groove 19 to uncover the tumbler pin openings in the bolt.
To operate slide 16, it is necessary to turn knob 26 to the left. rllhis turns lantern pinion Wheel 2:5 to the left, moves spur gear 29 and 30 (which is fixed to spur gear 29) to the left (as per drawing); spur gear BO moves the safety slide 16 upward by means of the nine teeth on safety slide 16 until the end of the safety slide 16 reaches tho shoulder of spring` 28 in the l`groove 19, left side of bolt 1. The end of safety slide 16 covering plate 15 will then have moved up far enough to uncover the openings in plate 15 and allow the key ll() to be inserted, and the end with the teeth will then have slightly passed the center of spur gears 29 and 30, and' stopped at the shoulder of spring 23,' the limit of the safety slide 16, so that a slight turn of the knob 26 in the opposite' direction nowv will catch the bottom tooth of the safety slide 16.
YWhile spur gears 29 and 30 will have so moved lto the left (as per drawing), carrying; with them safety slide 16 to its limit and uncovering` openings in plate 15, spur gears 27 and 28, also operated by lantern pinionwvheel 25 controlled by knob 26, vvill also-have moved to the left (as per drawing), and spur gea-r 28 will be slipping` past the only7 tooth of safety slide'- 17 held slightly below the center line of spur gears ou the 1T thus releasiiug pin tumbler# L.
then leaves pin tuinblers free le l el by the key lll. hv pressne key.' -l right makiite=` piu luuihlers lf e tere.'
