Be it known that I, JAMES M. Manus, citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at lVictoria, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Direction 1ndicators, of which the following-fis a speciiication.
This invention relates to a direction indicator i'or self-propelled vehicles and is designed as an improvement on that on which Patent No. 1,321,933 was granted.
VThe improvements, which are the subject of the present application, are directed to minor details oi' construction suggested by practical experience in the manufacture of the device, and particularly to an improved indicating hand and the manner oi. illuminating the same.
The invention is 'fully described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied7 in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device as applied to the windshield of a car, being a view `taken from the position of the driver.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section ot the indicating hand and its pivotal connection being on the line 2-2 in F ig. 3.`
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the same.
Fig. i is a section on the line 4--4 in Fig. 1 and shows the connection ofthe bracket in which the indicating hand is mounted to the clamp by which it is attached to the windshield frame.

As in the previous application the indicating semaphore 2 is preferably7 contoured to represent a hand, butl insteadv of that hand being represented by a flat sui-taco on the face of which a light is projected at night, it is formed of two embossed plates jointed together in a vertical plane in al manner to leave slits or apertures 3 in the joint between the two faces ot the hand, which slits 3 are also lett in the edges of the spaces 4L between the nngers.

Adjacent the wrist this semaphore has a stem 8 secured to it between the two halves, both ends of which stem project as pivots about which the semaphore may turn on a vertical axis in a bearing bracket 9.
rlhis bracket is mounted on an axial pin 10 projecting outward from a clamp 11 by which the device is secured to the side frame ofthe windshield or other convenient position. This manner of mounting the pivot bracket 9 on the pin 10 permits of axial adjustment of the hand to bring the wider dimension oi it substantially vertical, when there is a backward rake to the windshield. The bracket 9 is secured in its adjustmentby a small screw 12 threaded through the end of the clamp member 11 parallel to the pin 10, which screw has a reduced end which may enter one of a series of small apertures drilled in the face ot the bracket 9 to be concentric with its pin 10.
rl"he bearing bracket 9 carries a Stem 30 on theupper end ot' which is a clamp 31 adapted to hold a back viewing mirror with provision by which it may be set at any desired angle to suit the driver.
0n the lower end oi the pivot 8 below its bearing in the bracket 9 is secured a small flanged sheave 13 around which a flexible line, such as wire cable, is coiled and made fast. The ends of this wire cable 111 are conducted through separate sheathing coils 15 which are themselves enclosed within a tube 16 to another sheave 17 mounted on a pin 18 projecting from a support 20 which is clamped or otherwise secured to the steering post o'i the car to be convenient for the operator. On this sheave 17 the ends of 14 are made fast. The sheave 17 is provided with a handle 19 by which it may be moved to either side, which movement will correspondingly move the semaphore 2 to either side of the normal forwardly pointing position.
