4,Another object of theinvention is to provide an improved sifter, embodying a pair of compartments, one of said compartments being arranged to receive the tine ashes and the other compartment beine' arranged to receivethe partly burned coal.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide an improved sitter embodying a housing having a. swinging screen, which `is arranged below a hopper for sifting the ashes therefrom, the. screenbeing so' arranged, v*as to guidezthe line ashes to Aone compartment and the coarse or part-lylburnt coal to another compartment, the sitter having an improved means l'or operating the screen.
A still further object or' the invention is to provide an' improved sitter of the above character having an adjustable door. for the hopper, so as to regulate the feed or" the ashes tothe oscillating screen.
A still further object of the invention is to provide 'an improved ash sitter7 which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy'to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

One of the side walls 19 is provided with a pair of spaced openings in which are slidably mounted drawers 3l and 32 which are provided with hand pulls 33. Cleats 34 extend transversely in the bottom wall 7 and form means on which the drawers can slide. Suitable guides 35 are provided for engaging the upper outer edges of the drawers and a central guide 36 is Provided for engaging the inner upper edges of the drawers. The central guide 36 includes an inverted V-shaped member 37 secured to the transversely extending brace 38. Secured to the screen 8 adjacent to the lowest end thereof is a downward and forwardly inclined chute 39, which extends under the screen, has its lower end positioned immediately above the drawer 3l and is adapted to guide the fine ashes into the same. Suitable brace rods connects the free end of the chutes 39 with the side walls 9 ofthe screen 8 and` provides a rigid connection between the screen and the chute. The lower end of the screen 8 is positioned directly over the drawer 2 and is adapted to guide the coarse ashes or partly burnt coal into the same.
A pair of bearings 40 are secured to one of the end walls 6 and rotatably receives the eccentric shaft 41. The eccentric shaft 41 is formed of a pair of spaced sections 42 which are connected by a central section 43, which is bolted to the same by suitable fastening elements 44. A portion of the shaft 43 lying between the spaced ends of the sections 42 receive the connecting rod 45, which has its opposite end pivotally connected to thechute 39 adjacent to the rear end thereof as at a triangular block 46 and it will be seen that upon rotation of the shaft 4l, the connecting rod will swing the screen S. When it is desired to vary the stroke ofthe connectingrod 45 washers 47 or other suitable spacingelements are positioned between the shaft sections 42 and 43, so as to space the shaft section 43 from the sections 42 and thereby increase the stroke of the connecting rod.
Spaced blocks 48 are secured to one of theside walls 5 and support a strip 49 in spaced relation to the side wall, a stubshaft 50 has its terminals journaled in the side walls 5 and the strip 49 is adapted to be turned by a suitable crank 5l. A pulley 52 is keyed to the stub-shaft 50 intermediate the strip 49 of the side wall and connected to a driven pulley 53 connected by a belt 54. The driven pulley 53` is of less diameter than the pulley 52 and is keyed to the eccentric shaft 41.
The difference in the diameters of the drive pulley 52 andthe driven pulley 53 forms inrans whereby the shaft 4l can be driven at a relatively high speed. A diagonal brace rod 55 extends from one of the upper longitudinal bars 4 to the strips 49 and forms a suitable brace for the same.
ln operation of the improved device, the ashes to be sifted are placed in the hopper 1G and the door 2T is adjusted to regulate the feed of the same to the screen and the crank is then rota-ted, which in turn to the medium of the shaft connecting rod swings the screen back and forth which effectively sifts the ashes andthe line ashes fall through the screen onto the chtite 39, which carries the same into the drawer 3l and the coarse ashes and partijv burnt coals fall in the drawers 3l. The drawers can be readily removed, when the same are full.
In practice, l have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred toin the above description, as the preferred embodiments, is the most efficient and practical, yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption `of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangementof parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my inventionl as set forth.
