SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 562,750, dated June 23, 1896. Application filed August 24, 1895. gerial No. 560,424. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WnsLEv Wool)- RUFF, residing at IVise, in the county of M0- nongalia and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain-Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grain-separators, and has for its object to provide a separator by means of which grain and the like can be thoroughly separated, cleaned, and graded.
The invention has also for its object to provide means whereby the several parts can be quickly and readily adjusted to suit difierent kinds of grain or seed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a very simple, inexpensive, and effective machine.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. f is a side elevation of the upper portion of the separator, showing the hopper elevated. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of one of the screens, and Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views.
A is a frame, and B the fan-Wheel mounted therein. The shaft 19 of the fan-wheel is provided with cranks b at its ends, and upon the said ends pinions b are mounted. Upon the sides of the frame A above the pinions b are mounted gear-wheels 12 which mesh with the said pinions, and by means of the crankhandle b on one of the said gear-wheels the fan-shaft is revolved. Above the gear-wheel h is mounted the shaft b", which is provided with pinions b on its ends. One of the pinions 17 meshes with the gear-Wheel b and each is provided with a wrist-pin b.
In suitable hearings on the front posts or legs a. of the frame angular shaker-arms O and (J are mounted, and to the shorter members of the arms pitmen D and D are secured, the other ends of the pit-men being slotted to re ceive the cranks h and wrist-pins b of the fan-wheel shaft Z2, and the pinion b respectively. The shaker-arms C and O are pivoted by a common pivot o to the bearingplatcs c and their longer members are provided with L-shaped slots 0 (see Figs. 1, 2, and 6) to receive the pins 6 and f, respectively,bf the riddle boxes or frames E and F, so that the said boxes or frames will be reciprocated as the shaker-arms are rocked.
\Vhen the pitmen D and D are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, then the upper screenfra-me E will move faster than the lower screen-frame F, but if it is desired that the lower screen-frame F should move faster than the upper screenframe E then the pitmen D are secured to the cranks I) of the fan-shaft Z) and the pitmen D to the wrist-pins b of the pinions b and if the speed of the two frames is to be the same then the pitmen are both secured to either the cranks h or wrist-pins 1), according to the speed desired.
- By connecting the riddle boxes or frames to the shaker-arms by means of the pins and slots, as above described, the said boxes or frames can be readily adjusted to increase or decrease their movement. The rear ends of the riddle boxes or frames E and F are connected to adjustable bars G and H by links g and h, respectively. The bars G and H are provided with pins g and 71 projecting from their ends and working in grooves a on the inner faces of the rear posts or legs a of the frame.
The bars G and H are adjusted by means of the bar I, secured to the cross-bars a of the frame and working in the guideways g and 71. respectively, of the bars G and 1-1, the said bar I being adjustably held in the said guideways by the pins or bolts 2 By this means the rear ends of the riddle boxes or frames E and F can be quickly and readily adjusted.
Between the riddle boxes or frames E and F are the riddle boxes or frames .I and J. The riddle box or frame J rests at its lower end on the lower box or frame F and has its front end pivotally connected to the said box or frame F by the bars 1', rigidly secured to the frame J and pivoted to the frame or box F.
The rear end of the riddle box or frame J rests at its lower end on the lower riddle box or frame and has its front end pivotally connected to the upper riddle box or frame Eby bars 1 secured to the riddle box or frame J and pivoted to the box or frame E.
, The rear end of hopper K rests on the bar it, providedwith pins is, projecting from its ends and working in the grooves a of the pivots or, legs a, and the said bar It is connected to the bar G by links 102, (see Figs. 4' and 8,) so that the rear end of the hopper will be adjusted when the upper box or frame E 'is adjusted. The front'end'of the hopper K is adjusted by means of a bail-shaped support L,; hinged to thehopper and having its port into the position intowhich' they have been moved. v
On the sides of the hopper K are mounted the wheels which when the hopper is low ered rest in recesses c in the riddle box or frame E, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the hopper will be vibrated with the said box or frame. When it is desired not to have the hopper vibrate with the riddle box or frame, it can be adjusted by the means hereinbefore described, to raise the wheels k out of the recesses when the hopper will remain stationary. The hopper K is provided with comb-rods 70 and its front board 70 is made removable. I I V A feed-shaft N, mounted in the hopper K, is connected with a slide or gate forregulating the amount of grain or seed passing from the hopper. The shaft is screw-threaded and works in bearings at the ends and center, so that it works perfectly true and the grain or seed will be fed with regularity.
\Vhi'l'e any form of riddle or sieve may be employed, yet I prefer to employ a series of small riddles or sieves O for each box or frame, and so construct the riddles or sieves that they overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
By employing a series of small riddles or sieves I can fill a riddle box or frame with a series of them of the same mesh or of differ ent mesh, as may be desired.
In addition to the riddles or sieves O, I arrange a vertical riddle or sieve 0 at the rear end of the riddle box or frame J and just in front of the fan-wheel B, thereby permitting the grain to be brought close to the fan-wheel, so that it can be more effectively acted upon by the blast to remove light foreign matter and blighted grain,
From the above-described construction it will be seen that the several parts can be quickly and readily adj ustedto suit the grain or seed to be cleaned. It will also be seen that by my machine grain and seed can be separated, cleaned, and graded at one operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a vibrating screenframe, of a hopper pivoted at its rear end and having an interlocking engagement at its front end with the side bars of the screen- I frame, substantially, as described.
'2. In amachine of the character described, the combination with a supporting-frame and a vibrating screen-frame of a pivoted hopper and means for supporting the front end of the hopper to permit it to rest upon the said screen-frame'or to support it out of contact therewith, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the character described,
, the combination with a frame anda vibrating screen frame having recesses in its edges, of a hopper provided with wheels at its sides and adjustable supports for the hopper at front and rear, substantially as described.
4,. In amachine of the character described, the combination with a supporting-frame, of a hopper, bars secured to the rear of the hopper and to supports carried by the frame, and crank-rods having one end pivoted to the front of the hopper and their other ends adjustably secured to the frame, substantially as described. 5. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a vibrating screen, of a transverse bar fitted to slide in ways in the frame and supporting one end of the screen,
links connecting the hopper. and bar, and means for adjusting the said bar, substantially as described.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a vibrating screenfram'e, and a hopper, of an adjustable bar supporting one end of the screen-frame, a bar sliding in ways in the frame and to which the hopper is secured, and links pivoted to said bars, substantially as described. 4
7. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a Vibrating screenframe, and a hopper, of a transverse bar fitted to slide in ways in the frame, links secured to the screen-frame and bar, means for adjusting said bar, and links connecting the hopper and bar, substantially as described.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination with two vibrating screenframes, of two transverse bars fitted to slide in ways in the frame, links secured to the screen-frames and to the bars, and means for adjusting the said bars, substantially as described. p 7
9. In a machine of the character described, the combination with vibrating screenframes, and a hopper, of a bar sliding in ways of the frame and to which the hopper is secured, two bars adjustably connected together and sliding in ways in the frame, links connecting the two bars with the screen-frame respectively and links connecting the bar of the hopper with the bar with which the upper screen-frame is connected, substantially as described.
10. In amachine of the character described, the combination with the fan wheel, and screen-frames arranged one above the other, of oscillating shaker-arms, two on each side of the machine, said arms supporting the outer ends of the said screen-frames, a pitman connected with each shaker-arm, and means for operating the pitman from the fan- Wheel shaft forimparting a faster movement to one screen-frame than the other, substantially as described.
11. In a machine of the character described, the comhin ation with the fan-wheel shaft provided with pinions and cranks, and screenframes arranged one above the other, of pivoted and angular shaker-arms having one member connected with the screen-frames, pinions driven from the fan-wheel shaft and provided with wrist-pins, and pitmen secured to the shaker-arms and connected with the cranks of the fan-wheel shaft and wrist-pins of the pinions, substantially as described.
12. In amachine of the character described, the combination with screen-frames provided with pins projecting from their sides at their outer ends, of two angular shaker-arms pivoted 011 a common pivot on each side of the machine, and each provided with L-shaped slots in one member to receive the pins of the screen-frames, pitmen secured to the other members of the shaker-arms, and means for connecting the other ends of the pitmen with the fan-wheel shaft to impart a slow or fast movement to the screen-frames, substantially as described.
13. In a machine of the character described, the combination with the fan-wheel shaft provided with pinions and cranks, and screenframes provided with laterallyprojecting pins at their outer ends, of two angular shaker-arms pivoted on a common pivot on each side of the machine and each provided with L-shaped slots in one member to receive the pins of the screen-frames, pinions driven from the fan-wheel shaft and provided with wrist-pins, and pitmen secured to the shakerarms and detachahly connected with the cranks of the fanwheel shaft and wrist-pins of the pinions, substantially as described.
