IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.

Speciii cation forming part of Letters `Patent No. 144,534, dated November 11, 1873; applcation'led March 1, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPH GRAY, of Ray` section of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. l.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fence, strong, durable, not liable to be pushed over, or out of place, and which may be readily moved from one place to another, as may be required. The invention consists in the arrangement of the uprights, the inclined braces, the base cross-bars, and the cap-bars with each other 5 in the combination of the stakes with the uprights, the inclined braces, the base cross-bars, and the cap-bars; and in the combination of the top rails, the bottom rails, and ground blocks with the uprights, the inclined braces, the crossbars, and the cap-bars, as hereinafter fully described.'

A are the uprights, which are arranged in pairs. The uprights of each pair are placed at such a distance apartas to receive the ends of the rails B between them, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The pairs of uprights A are placed at such a distance apart as the length of the rails may require. O are inclined braces, the upper ends of which are beveled 0E upon their inner sides to fit against, and are secured to, the outer sides of the upper ends of the uprights A. The braces O are made of such a length that their lower ends may be in the same horizontal plane with the lower ends of the uprights A. ,The lower ends of the braces O and uprights A are connected and held in their proper relative positions by the cross-bars D attached to the opposite sides of said lower ends, as shown ndn Figs. 1 and 2. The upper ends of the uprights A and braces O are connected and held in their proper relative positions by bars E attached to said ends, and which are made as wide as -said uprights and braces, so as to serve as caps. to protect them from the weather. To the lower edges of the cross-bars, or to the lower ends of the uprights A and braces C, are attached, or beneath them are placed, blocks F to rest upon the ground and support the fence, keeping it from coming in contact with the ground. Gr are stakes, which are driven along the outer sides of the lower ends of the braces O, and between the ends of the bars D, into the ground, and which may be secured to said braces, if desired, to hold the fence securely against lateral movement. To the centers of the caps E, directly above the rails B, are attached top rails H, and to the centers of the cross-bars D, directly beneath the rails B, are attached bottom rails I. The rails H I are designed to connect the several panels of the fence securely to each other.

Having thus described my invention, I claim l as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The three fence-posts composed each of the .pairs of uprights A A, the pairs of inclined braces O C connected at the top by a cappiece, E, at the bottom between the two bars D D, and all connected together by a single top rail, H, and a single base rail, I, substantially as and for the purposesherein set forth.
