and State of illinois, have invented a new and' useful Truss, of which the following is a specification.
Hrihis invention relates to trusses and re lates particularly to lattice trusses.
The object of the invention is to provide a truss particularly designed and especially adapted for supporting the roofs of grandstands,v amphitheatres and similar structures, which, in addition to the roof proper, comprise a projecting portion or canopy adapted to protect the occupants of the structure from the sun and weather.y
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a truss for the purpose specified, of such construction that the .projecting portion of the roof will not obstruct the view from said grandstand or other structure.
To effect the foregoing objects, my improved truss comprises a main section and what may be described as a cantileversection. As shown, said main section consists of a usual form of lattice truss comprising a bowed top chord, 'a substantially straight lbottom chord, means connecting said chords at their ends, and lattice members which connect said top and bottom chords; and said cantilever section .comprises an arm bowed reversely to the curvature of the top chord of the main section of the truss and which preferably forms a continuation thereof, a top chord or member which -connects the outer end of said cantilever arm with the bowed top chord of the main section of the truss intermediate its ends, the top edge of said chord being preferably substantially continuous with the upper edge of'` the top chord of the main section of the truss at its highest point, whereby the top edges of said chords will be continuous with each other, and lattice members which connect the top chord of said cantilever section with the cantilever arm thereof and also with the top and bottom chords of the main truss section, said lattice members, so far as possible, forming extensions of the lattice members connecting the top and bottom chords of the main section of the truss. Referring now toI the drawings in which, for purposes of definite and concrete illustration, I`have shown a truss of my invention as applied in use for supporting the roof of a grand-stand or similar structure, A designates my improved truss as a whole, B, B posts or columns for supporting the front and rear ends, respectively, of the roof structure and C the roof covering,
comprising joists c and sheathing c'.
In accordance with my invention the truss A comprises a main section designated as a whole A and what may be described asa cantilever section A2.
As shown, the main section vA of my improved truss consists yof ausual form of lattice truss, comprising a bowed top chord 1,' a bottom chord 2 and lattice members 3.
As shown, said'top and bottom' chords 1 and 2 are of a familiar. type comprising separated sections between which the lattice members 3 are secured, the sections of said top chord being formed by timbersbent fiatwise and secured together to form a plurality of layers, the flat sides of said timbers being disposed substantially at right angle to lines normal to the curve defined by said top chord. In like manner the bottom chord 2, as shown, consists of timbers secured together flatwise with their flat sides parallel with what may be referred to in a general way as the plane of said truss.
As regards my present invention, however, the specific construction of the truss formare connected to each other and to the sup` porting` post or column B by suitable means consisting, as shovvn, of a strap L bent bef tween its ends to extend over the top chord l with its end sections embracing the lateral sidesvfofv-said topand bottom chords and of the post B,.saidstrap being bolted or other- Wise krigidly secured to said top and bottom 1 chords andto said post.
The cantilever section A2 of the truss A comprises an arm 5 bowed reversely to the curvature of .the top chord l of the main truss ysection A', a chord 5` which connects the outer end et said cantilever arm With the top chord l of vthe main truss section A', andk lattice members 7 which connect said cantilever arm 5 kand chord 6 with each other vand also with the top and vbottom chords oit-the main truss section A.
As shownfthe cantilever arm. 5 and chord 6 lcomprises separated sections between which the lattice members 7 are secured, the construction thereof, respectively, beingl the same as that 0i" the topv and bottom chords l and' @of the main truss Asection A', the sections oi` said cantilever arm preferably forming continuations or extensions of rthe chordsections ot said chord top 1.
Also, in order lthat the root` .covering (l m'ay present an even surface, the chord 6 is preferably secured to vthe top chord l of the main truss Section A so that the upper vedges ot saidchords will. be continuous With eachfother,convenient means ttor this purpose consisting or' straps 8, said straps being bent between their ends to extend over the connected chords with their ends embracing and bolted orfothervvise` rigidly secured thereto.
ln the particular'application oi' my im- *proved truss shown, the portion of Vthe roof C, which projects in front of the supporting posts andv is supported by the `cantilever section A2 ot the trusses form the canopy ofthe roof.

A truss comprising` main and cantilever sections, the main section comprising` top and bottom chords, and lattice members which connect said chords, and the .cantilever section comprising a cantilever arm, a chord which connects said cantilever arm with the top chord of the main truss section, and lattice members which connect the chord of said cantilever section with the cantilever arm and also With the top chord of said main truss section, the relation being` such that the cantilever' section of the truss will overlap lthe main section thereof, .substantially as described'.
2. A truss comprising main and cantilever sections substantially as specified in claim l, in which the top chord Aof the main "truss section is bowed, substantially as described.
