PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SKINNER, OF STOOKWELL, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN WOOD-SAWING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,482, dated November 11, 1873; application filed September 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SKINNER, of Stockwell, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Wood-Sawing Machine, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a saw-frame of a power sawing-machine, suspended by a couple of swing-bars, one of which is connected to an arm which is capable of rising and falling, and is provided with a lever by which the saw is lifted up and let down, as required, in the progress of the work, and the lever is arranged to be manipulated by the operator while in the position for turning the crank. My invention also consists of a sawbench for receiving the piece cut off, arranged on a pivot and connected by an arm and rod with a hand-lever,
so that the attendant can throw off the piece by a quick movement of the lever while standing at the place for attending to the drivinggear and the saw-adjusting lever.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved sawing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan-view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the saw-frame, which may be of any suitable construction or arrangement adapted for holding and working a crosscutsaw. It is suspended at B by the swing-bar O, which hangs from the rock-shaft D. It is also suspended at E from the swing-bar F, which hangs from the arm G, which is supported on the rock-shaft H, and suspended from the short arm of the lever I by a rod, K, so as to be raised or lowered by said lever, which extends back to the crank-shaft L, where the person working the machine can work it,
to raise and lower the saw, while standing in the position for working the machine, so as to lessen and simplify his labor. The rock-shaft M and arms N represent the part of the sawbench for receiving the piece of wood cut oft from the log, resting onthe stationary bench O. The shaft M is connected, by an arm, P, and rod Q, with a lever, It, also arranged at the crank-shafts, so that the operator can from the same point throw off the piece of wood by swinging the lever B back so as to throwup the arms Nwith a quick motion. The logof wood is clamped on the bench O by a lever, S, and notched holding-plate T. The sawis connected to the counter-shaft V by the rod U, and said shaft is geared with the crank-shafts L by the pinions W and wheels X. The lever I is fastened under the block Z to hold the saw up for adjusting the log. A weight is suspended on the arm G, so as to regulate the pressure of the saw by being shifted along the arm.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The saw-frame suspended by swinging bars 0 and F from the rock-shaft D and the rock-arm G, the latter being connected to the adjusting-lever I, and said lever being arranged, relatively to the crank-shafts,substantially as specified.
2. The rocking saw-bench M N,connected to the lever B at the crank-shafts by the arm 1? and rod Q, substantially as specified.
JOHN SKINNER.
