Be it known that l, SAMUEL E. BURKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitcairn, in the vcounty of Allegheny and `State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Pumps, of which the following lis a specification.
rlhis invention relates to pumps particularly adaptable for use `as an accessory for motor vehicles, and the primary object of the invention is `to provide an improved pump constructed so that its base can be readily removed, thereby permitting differ ent types of bases to be associated therewith, so that the pump can be used leither for pumping air or for pumping water..
"A 'further object ofthe invention vis to provide a novel type of pump for facilitating the filling of vehicle radiators from streams and the like, when the vehicle is on the road, which embodies a novel valve structure for controlling the flow of water into-'and from the pump base, the pump having a novel type of nozzle for engaging the radiator iilling tube. y
A. still further object lof thejinvention is to provide an improved combination pump for motor vehicles of the above character, which 'is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one' which can beplaced `upon the market kat a reasonable cost.
l/Vith these and other objects in View', th invention consists inthe novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings: y

Figure 3 is -a top plan view of the improved base which is adapted to be connected with the pump barrel, when the pump is to be utilized for elevating water.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the pump barl rel or cylinder; B, the piston and its component parts; and C, the detachable base used when thepump is to .be utilized` for pumping water. L The pump barrel A includes `a hollow cylindrical body 10 having its opposite ends open and externally threaded as at 11 and f l2. The upper end of the cylindrical body 10 has arranged thereon a disc washer or plate 12 and this plate is held in position by means ofacap'l, which is `provided with a stuffing boX 141, `through .which extends the piston rod 20 of the piston B and'its component parts. The upper surface ofthe stuffing box 1&1 is concaved, as at 15 for the reception 'of the packing `16v and the stuiHng box cap 17 forces the stuffing or gasket' into engagementwiththe piston rod 20.
The pistonB is ofthe usual cup form and includes the `upper. and lower platesI 18 and 19,.between Awhich is "adapted to be positioned the iieXible ldisc 21,the outer edge of which is extendedbeyond'the plates 18 and 19 and downturned, as clearly shownin the drawings; The plateslS'and 19 andthe intermediate ,gasket 21 are mounted upon the reduced end 22 of the piston rod v2O and this reduced `end is lprovided `with y -threads for the reception of theretaining nut 23, which holds the piston in place on the piston rod.
`The upper end of the piston rod 2O has a suitable handle 25 `.mounted thereon, and up`` per and lower wear4 plates 26 and 27 are projvlded forengagmgthe upper and lower surfaces of the handle, and the handle is held in position by means of a retaining 'nut 28` which is threaded on the uppervendof the piston rod 20. lt can be seen that by raising and lowering the handle'25 ythat the piston B will .be actuated. lIn order to effectively cool the `pump-and .to permit the escape of air upon the upstroke of the piston, the piston cap 13 and the `gasketor `disc plate 12, are provided with air escape openings 29.
The baseC includes the upstanding holt low cylindrical body y30 and the bottom wall 31, whichis providedfwith outwardly extending ears `32, which define a relatively large base plate for the pump andy also foot rests forholding the pump cylindler or# barrel'A against movement during the operation of the piston B. The upper end of the cylindrical body 30 is provided with internal threads 33 so that 4the cylindrical body l0 `of the pump valve A can be threaded directly yinto the same. Directly below the 'threads 33 the body 30 is provided with a threaded bore 34, in which is threaded a nipple which is provided with the polygonal stop shoulder 36. lt `so desired, a suitable'pacling gasket 37, can'be interposed between the shoulder 36 and the outer surface of the body 30. The nipple 35 extends inwardly into the body 30 and is provided with an angular bent terminal 38, which forms a valve seat, the purpose of which will hereinafter more fully appear. rllhe outer end of the nipple 35 protrudes y outwardly of the body 30 and is provided with an annular groove 39 and the ontwardly extending portion ofthe nipple is adapted to receive a liexible tube 40. 'fr suitable retaining ring 4l may be employed tor forcing a portion of the flexible tube 40 into the groove 39 whereby slipping oi the tube will be eliminated. The lower wall 3l is provided with an inwardly extending horizontal way 4Q and a. vertically disposed way 43 which terminates substantially directly below the bent end 38 of the nipple The horizontal way 42 is provided with internal threads for the reception et the nipple 44, which has attached thereto a suitable tlexible hose 45. The hose 45 is attached to the nipple 44 similar to or the same manner in which the hose 40v is oonnected to the nipple 35.
A singlev valve is utilized for controlling the inlet and outlet of fluid into the body 30y and the pump barrel or cylinder A., and as shown this valve includes a fiat body 51 and a reduced stem 52 which .is held in placeon the lower wall by a suitable removable astening element This valve 50 may be formed of any suitable material, such as rubber, leather or the like. The valve body 51 is normally adapted to rest over the vertically disposed way 43 and the upper surface of the way forms a valve seat. lt can be seen however, that on the up stroke, when the huid is sucked into the pump barrel, the valve will seat on the hent end oi the nipple and thus lprevent the flow o'l water therethrough. The hose 4() may be formed oany desired length', and the upper endoii the same is provided with U-shaped nozzle 55, which is adapted to vtube hose j 45 is extended to a stream or other body of the water and the nozzle 55 is inserted in the radiator filling spout ol the vehicle, and the piston is drawn up into the'cylinder il. rlhis lifts the valve 50 from oft ot the valve seat formed by the vertical way 43 and moves rthesame into tight engagement with the seat formed on the inner end oi the nipple 35. This prevents vthe sucking; of air into the cylinder and permits the i'ree iiow oi water Ainto the same, The piston is then loreed down which will forcibly move the valve 50 on the seat formed by the vertical way 43 and water will be forced through the nipple 35 through the hose 40, nozzle 5o and into the radiator.
Changes in details may be made without departing from thespirit or scope of this invention; but,
