The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved hydraulic jack of the type referred to, and Which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture and readily carried about and placed in position for use on heavy trucks, automobiles and the like.
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a casing provided externally with spaced lugs, a cylinder within the casing and containing a piston having its piston rod extending through the cap which closes the casing and the cylinder, and a pump having a barrel attached to said lugs and spaced from the said casing to form a handle for the hydraulic jack, the said pump having a valved connection with the said cylinder by way of one of the said lugs.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the hydraulic jack on the line 11 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the return valve, the section being on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The casing 10 of the hydraulic jack is provided with a base 11 in which screws the lower end of a cylinder 12 at the reduced recess 13 of the said base so that the cylinder 12 forms with the casing 10 an annular reservoir 14 for containing oil or other liquid used in operating the hydraulic jack. The cylinder 12 may be made of plain tubing and by being screwed in the ass 11 of the casing 10 the two parts can be readily assembled and cheaply manufactured. The upper ends of the casinglO and New York, have invented the cylinder 12 are closed by a cap 15 provided with a depending rim 16 having a beveled edge 17 fitting onto a correspondingly beveled edge 18 on the upper end of the casing 10 thus closing the upper end thereof without danger of leakage. cap 15 is further provided with a depending annular flange 19 concentric with the rim 16 and screwing on the upper end 20 of the cylinder 12 thus holding the cap in position and closing both the casing 10;.and the cylinder 12. The flange 19 is provided with an opening 21 extend ng above the top of the cylinder 12 to provide communication between the reservoir 14 and the upper end of the cylinder 12 to permit a ready flow of the liquid, as hereinafter more fully explained.
Within the cylinder 12 is mounted to reciprocate a piston 25 provided with a piston rod 26 extending upwardly through a stuffing box 27 held on the cap 15; The outer end of the piston rod 26 is provided with the usual head 28 adapted to engage an axle or other part to be raised or lowered. The piston 25 is provided with a relief valve 29 normally closed and adapted to move into open position on the top of the valve coming into contact with the under side of the cap 15 at the time the piston 25 moves into uppermost position.
Lugs 30 and 31 are formed integrally on the side of the casing 10 and the said lugs are located one above the other, and to the said lugs are secured the lower and upper ends 32 and 33 of a barrel 34 of a pump for pumping the liquid into the cylinder 12. By the arrangement described the barrel 34 intermediate its ends 32 and 33 is spaced from the casing 10 and thus forms a handle for conveniently carrying the hydraulic jack about from one place to another. Within the barrel 34 is mounted to reciprocate a plunger 35 extending at its upper end through a stufiing box 36 held on the upper end 33 of the barrel 34. The upper end of the plunger 35 is connected by a link 37 with a hand lever 38 fulcrumed at 39 on .the top of the cap 15.

Thus on alternately raising and lowering the pump plunger 35, the piston 25 in the cylinder 12 isgradually raised by the incoming liquid whereby the axle or other part resting on the head 28 is lifted. When it is desired to lower the part then the lower end of the cylinder 12 is connected with the lower end of the reservoir 1a to allow the liquid to flow from the cylinder l2back into the reservoir 14:, and for this purpose use is made of a needle valve adapted to connect the lower end of the cylinder 12 with the reservoir 14:. It is understood that when the needle valve 50 is open then the weight of the part on the top of the head 28 forces the piston 25 downward in the cylinder 12 and this movement is gradual owing to the how of the liquid from the cylinder 12 into the reservoir 1% by way of the open needle valve 50. The outer end of the needle valve 50 is provided with a suitable handle 51 for conveniently turning the needle valve into open or closed position.
By reference to the drawings it will be noticed that the valved connections &0 and l1 for the cylinder 12 and the reservoir 14 are by way of the lower lug 30 and the lower end 32 of the pump barrel 3%, and the needle valve 50 is likewise located in the said lug 80 and the barrel end 32.
When it is desired to lift the parts lower down than the head 28 use is made of a sleeve 60 mounted to slide up and down on the outside of the casing 10. lhe sleeve 60 is provided at one side with a cut-out portion 61 straddling the lugs 30 and 31 thus guiding the sleeve 60 in its up or down movement. The sleeve 60 is provided with a top 62 resting on the lifting head 28. The lower end of the sleeve 60 is provided with a lifting foot 63 extending outwardly and adapted. to engage the part to be lifted. It is understood that when the iston 25 is moved upward on operating t e pump as previously explained then the sleeve 60 is lifted and with it the part to be raised and resting on the foot 63.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a hydraulic jack, a casing provided at the side with spaced lugs, a cylinder within the said casing and provided with a pis- -ylinder casing being spaced eservoir between them, and

. he side with spaced lugs, a cylinder within the said casing and provided with a piston, the cylinder and easing being spaced apart to form a reservoir between them, and a pump having a barrel attached to the-said lugs and spaced from the side of the casing to form a handle, the said barrel being in communication with the said casing cylinder by way of one of the said lugs.
3. In a hydraulic jack, a casing provided at the side with spaced lugs, a cylinder within the said casing and provided with a pis ton, the cylinder and casing being spaced apart to form a. reservoir between them, a pump having a barrel attached to the said lugs and spaced from the side of the casing to form a handle, and a valved connection between the lower end of the said pump barrel and the lower ends of the said cylinder and reservoir.
l. In a hydraulic jack, a casing having a base and being open at the top, the said base having a reduced recess, a cylinder having its lower end attached to the wall of the said recess, and a cap screwing on the upper end of the said cylinder and fitting onto the upper end of the said cylinder and fitting ,onto the upper end of the said casing.
5. In a hydraulic jack, a casing having a base provided with a recess, the upper end of the casing being beveled, a cylinder screwing into the recessed portion of the base and being spaced at the side from the side of the casing to form with the latter an annular reservoir, a cap having the lower edge of its rim beveled and fittin onto the beveled upper end of the said casing, the cap being provided with a threaded flange screwing on the upper end of the said cylinder, and a piston mounted to reciprocate in the said cylinder and having its piston rod extending through the said cap.
6. In a hydraulic jack, a casing having a base provided with a recess, the upper end of the casing being beveled, a cylinder screwing into the recessed portion of the base and being spaced at the side from the side of the casing to form with the latter an annular reservoir, a cap having the lower edge of its rim beveled and fitting onto the beveled upper end of the said casin the cap being provided with a threaded ange screwing on the upper end of the said cylinder, a piston mounted to reciprocate in the said cylinder and having its piston rod extending through the said cap, a pump having its barrel secured at the ends to the side of the casing. the barrel being spaced from the casing to form a handle for the jack, and
a valved connection connecting the lower end of the pump barrel with the lower ends of the said cylinder and the said reservoir.
7. In a hydraulic jack, a casing, a cylinder within the casing and forming with the latter a reservoir, a cap closing the upper ends of the said casing and cylinder, a piston mounted to reciprocate in the said cylinder and having a piston rod extending through the said cap, a lifting head on the upper end of the said piston rod, spaced lugs on the outside of the said casing a pump attached to the said lugs and spaced from the casing to form a handle, and a valved connection between the said pump and the said cylinder and reservoir, the said valved connection being by Way of one of the said lugs.
8. In a hydraulic jack, a casing, a cylinder within the casing and forming with the latter a reservoir, a cap closing the upper ends of the said casing and cylinder, a piston mounted to reciprocate in the said cylinder and having a piston rod extending through the said cap, a lifting head on the upper end of the said piston rod, lugs on the outside of the said casing, a pump attached to the said lugs, a valved connection between the said pump and the said cylinder and reservoir, the said valved connection being by way of one of the said lugs, and a sleeve slidable exteriorly up and down on the said casing and being guided by the said lugs, the said sleeve having a top resting on the said lifting head and the said sleeve being provided at its lower end with a lifting foot.
