GEORGE W. WEBB, OF KENT, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO STANLEY CARLTON SLTTH, OF LUTON, BEDFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND.
REDUCTION GEAR.
Application filed June 22, 1922.
To a-ZZ lw fromr t may concern Be it known that 1, GEORGE VILLIAM liliana, a Subject o'l' the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Brooklands, Dartford, Kent, England, have invented new and usei'ul Improved Form ot Reduction Gear. on Which application has been made for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 10,711, tiled 12th April, 1921, cognate with No. 20,580, liled 2nd August, 1921, of Which the following is a specification The present invention relates to improvements in those reduction gears in which a high speed rotating eccentric integral With the driving member is adapted to rock a strap mounted thereon, the radial motion of said strap being transmitted to gearing adapted to convey motion or" the driving member to the driven member at a. reduced speed.
The present invention provides among other features, reduction gearing of the character described in which circular bars or rollers are employed as the teeth of one member of a pair of engaging gears actuated by the radial movement of the strap of the eccentric sheave.
My invention is illustrated by Way o eX- ample in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 shows a sectional elevation of a 'form of reduction gearing embodying my invention.
Figure 2 shows a transverse section on the line E. F. of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings; 1 indicates a high speed shaft, 2 the lov7 speed shaft. The high speed shaft is integral with an eccentric sheave 3. This eccentric has mounted thereon acollar or strap 4f, which is adapted to receive a radial and rocking action from the eccentric but is prevented `from rotating with said eccentric by any suitable means commonly employed in this type of gearing. The said collar l is provided With a groove la through which pass a series of rollers 9 respectively adapted to Serial No. 570,181.
engage in the substantially semi-circular paths 18. The rollers are rigidly held and b raced on their outer ends by the flange portien ab. The number of the rollers 9 in relation to the number of the paths 18 is such as to give the desired reduction in speed. "lhese semi-circular paths are formed in the inturned lip 19 of a flange 2O integral with the low speed shaft 2. This form of gearing has the advantage in use that the rollers 9 are only in engagement with their paths 1S during the operative portion of their travel. i
What I claim ist- 1. A reduction gearing comprising a driving member, a driven member, an eccentric integral with said driving member, a strap mounted on said eccentric and actuated in an orbital path thereby, anda series of peripherally arranged driving elements secured at opposite ends to said strap, said driven member being provided With gear elements overhanging said driving elements in position to be engaged thereby in sequence during the orbital movement of said strap.
2. A reduction gearing comprising a driving member, a driven member, an eccentric integral With said driving member, a strap mounted on said eccentric to receive a radial and rocking motion therefrom, means to prevent the rotation or" said strap While permitting an orbital motion thereof, a series of peripherally arranged rollers secured to said strap, means rigid With said strap for securing the outer ends of said rollers, and a flange fixed With relation to said driven member and provided With a series of semi-circular paths adapted to be engaged by said series of rollers, the gearing so formed being actuated by the radial movement of said strap to convey the motion of the driving member to the driven member at a reduced speed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
GEO. W. WEBB.
