HINGE.
Application filed Deceznber 6, 1921. Serial No. 520,408.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS MoNnILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Hinge, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges, an object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of hinge pin having a longitudinal lubricant .containing groove therein which serves to lubri cate all movable parts of the hinge and can be readily removed, cleaned and refilled from time to time as may be desired. l
A further object is to provide a hinge having an improved construction'of hinge pin which can be manufactured and sold at a cost the same as the ordinary hinge pin as it can be formed in the die in like manner with the ordinary structure, and yet which will provide means whereby a lubricant can be maintained in proper relation to the movable sleeves or elements in the hinge to lengthen the life of the hinge and prevent noise by operation thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view mainly in front eleva tion, but showing in longitudinal section the hinge knuckles and the hinge pin in elevation thereon.
Figure 2 is a view in section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. p
1 and 2 represents the leaves of an ordinary separable hinge and 3 is the aligned sleeves or hinge knuckles which receive my improved hinge pin 4:. This hinge pin 4 is removable as is customary, and is provided preferably with a knob 5 at one end corresponding with the fixed knob 6 on one of the leaves of the hinge.
It is, of course, obvious that the exact shape of the pin head or other form of head is immaterial, but it is, of course, necessary to have some form of head to limit the movementof the moval. a p
My improved hinge pin is made with a longitudinal groove 7 extending throughout its length, or at least throughout that portion of its length which acts as a pintle within the sleeves or knuckles 3 of the hinge. This groove 7 is filled with a lubricating composition 8 which is of sufficient consistency to remain in the groove and. yet lubricate the surfaces and supply lubricant for an indefinite length of time. The invention is, of course, not limited to the "particular lubricating means employed in the groove as it is obvious that this is subject to modification, but my invention resides in the propin and to facilitate its revision of a longitudinal groove in a hinge. pln adapted to contain lubricating means which supplies the surfaces adjacent thereto.
I am, of course, aware that lubricating grooves in various articles are old, but the provislon of a lubricant containing longitudinal groove in a huge pin is an absolutely new idea so far as I have any knowledge and in the provision ofv such a construction of pin lam enabled to use the same as any ordinary pin or replace ordinary pins and provide a lubricant containing pin which supplies the lubricant as it is needed, and, furthermore, can produce such a lubricating hinge pin that its cost is no greater than v the cost of the ordinary pin.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to theprecise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim: I e
As a new article of manufacture, a hinge pin, a head on the hingepin, and said pin having in its outer face and throughout its length a straight longitudinal lubricant, receiving groove, said head operating as a closure for the upper end of the groove when the pin is in position in a hinge.
