SHOULDER SU'PPQRT FOR HAVERSACKS, ETC.
Application filed August 18, 1920. Serial No. 404,391.
T0 @ZZ t0 7mmA t 71mg/ concern Be it known that l, Franny-cis Si. Bmnnsnur. a citizen of the United States, residingT at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder Supports for Haversacks, Etc.; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in a shoulder support for haversacks, etc., and has for its primary object the provision of simple and efficient means for supporting` haversaoks and similar packs on the shoulders of the carrier under conditions which will not involve the discomfort and the drawingv or contracting' and clamping` effects of the straps or harness ordinarily employed for this purpose and which will allow perfect freedom of movementI ofthe body of the carrier or wearer.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a shoulder support for haversacks and the like which may be readily attached to haversacks or other packs or packages without alteration in the construction thereof and by means of which the pack or package may be securely and properly supported upon the shoulders of ti carrier or wearer.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in View as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth.l shown in the accompanying; drawings and claimed.
In the drawings formiiui` a part of the present application i- Figure 1' is a view of the suA n when in use. applied to a ha'versacr or similar receptacle or package.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view showing the manner of attaching` the support to the receptacle or package. A
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view through the fastening means for the support and showing the support in elevation and a portion of the receptacle or package in section.
Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 10 indicates a pair of arcuate shoulder clamps or clips made of steel or.
similar lresilient material and covered to form substantially a semi circle or at least to an extent to assure a spring); movement of the terminals thereof toward each other so that when' applied to the shoulders of the wearer the tendency of the extremities of the shoulder clamps or clips is to bear respecitvely against the back and the front of the shoulder while the arched intermediate portion of` each clamp or clip 10 bears upon the shoulder to carry the weight of the haversack 11 or other receptacle or package supported thereby. f
ln order to mount the shoulder clamps or clips 10 upon the receptacle, l have provided a rod 12 provided with turned ends 1 3 and upon the main portion of which-rod 12 are mounted the rolled ends 14 of the shoulder clamps or clips 10 adjacent the opposite ends 1.3 of said rod 12. This rod 12 is covered by a retaining strip 15 of any suitable material such as thick leather, metal or the like. The strip 15 has suitable openings 16 to accommodate the rolled ends 11i of the shoulder clamps or clips 10 and the strip 15 is secured in position preferably by a row of stitching 17 or the like around its edge portion. rlhe rod 12 is also preferably held in position by a row of stitching 18 or the like through the strip 15 and the portion of the receptacle 11 upon which the strip 15 is mounted`r the row of stitching 18 extendinga around the side and ends of the rod 12, as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawing. It will be understood from the foregoing paragraphs taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application that the shoulder clamps or clips 10 may be placed any suitable distance apart so as to rest comfortably upon the shoulders o-f the wearer or carrier. t will also be understood that the clamps or clips 10 are preferably heavily padded as indicated at 19 for the comfort of the wearer or carrier.
lWhile the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will, he understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may he resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1.. A haversack consisting of a containing body, an anchor disposed on the body, a
:Flexible securing` element fastened to the body and over seid anchor7 seid element having e slot therethrough, :t substantially arcuate securing member through Which said anchor passes and extending' through seid elet, whereby said securingmember is mounted against displacement in a direction longitudinely oi.5 the anchor member, and. said securing' member being` pivoted on said anchoring member.
2. A suspending means of the class described having e suspending member, an anchor from which seid suspendingmember extends, ai, flexible securing' element for disposition over seid anchor and ettachable to 15 an article to fasten -the anchor in place, seid element having' e slot therethrough, and said suspending member extending through seid slot and being maintained by the Wells thereof age-inst displacement in a direction 20 longitudinally of the anchorinember.
In testimony whereof affix my signature in presence oi two Witnesses.
FRANCXS S. BLAKESLEY.
