IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE LININGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,460, dated November 11, 1673; application filed July 5, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN A. J AcKsoN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lining Grates and Fire-Places, of which the following is a speciication:

This invention relates to ornamental linings for grates and refplaces and consists in the mode of attaching the tiles or blocks to the meing the tiles or blocks of which it was composed, or breaking them loose from the wall to which they were attached. This ornamental lining has usually been fastened with cement, but the tiles or blocks have been set like window-panes in metallic frames. (See patent issued to William H. Jackson, No. 92,974, dated July 27,1869.) "In such cases the frames were broken and warped by contact with the lire, so that this plan has proved practically useless. These difliculties are entirely overcome by the present invention, in which tiles of any form or description, or metal blocks of any design, ligure, or size, are securely bolted or fastened to a metallic backing made in the form desired for the fire-place or grate, room being allowed for expansion, so that the lining is not damaged by the heat.

A represents the tiles or blocks, which may be of any desired form or design, and of any suitable material. I prefer tiles of earthen or porcelain made for the purpose. B represents screws or bolts. C is the metallic backing on which the tiles are laid, and to which theyr are secured by the bolts or screws B. The fastening screws or bolts B pass between the tiles, either at the corners or any other part, and they may pass through the tiles or blocks and enter the backing, as seen in Fig. 2.

Instead of using bolts which screw into the backing, rivets may be used, but this would defeat one object which I have in viewthat is, to so attach the tiles or blocks that any one may be removed at will by taking out one or more screws or bolts. One or more of the edges of the tiles or blocks may be beveled or made in any form which will allow them to lap onto each other or be locked together in any manner, by which means a less number of screws or bolts may be used than is shown in the drawing.

D represents the border or casing which surrounds the lining, whelr room for expansion is allowed, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. E representswashers beneath the heads ot' the bolts or screws. These washers may be of any suitable form and design.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentf The combination of blocks A and bottom O with an overlappin g frame, D, wider botll`- ways than the aggregate width of the rows of blcks, and with the washer-bolt B E applied at the junction of said blocks, as and for the purpose described.
