My invention relates to new and useiul improvements in buiing and polishing machines, particularly those which are adapted iior use in preparing various lrinds ecep`- tacles for market.
The principal purpose o'l the invention is to provide a buihng and polishing` machine which is capable oi" practically universal ap plication. ln .other words, my primary ob ject is to produce a machine for holding an article while beine polished which can loc moved in a variety oi' directions with respect to thebuffing wheel.
, With this general object in View the invention consists of the novel Atentures ot construction, combination and arrangement ot parts which will be hereinaiter more par-- ticularly described and claimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved machine includes a support l. formed on :a base 2, a stationary standard 3 and pivoted frame il. The frame et is connected to the base 2 by means of a pivot shatt 5 extending through the lower ends oi the former` and bearing ears (3 extending 'from the latter. The work carrying parts oic the machine are mounted upon the upper end oiu this pivoted frame 4.

The sleeve 22 and shalt QS-Which is rotatable therein are movable longitudinally and held in different adjiusted positions by means oitD the rotation of a ieed screw 26, said screw having a nut- 27 thereon which is carried by a feed collar 28, the latter being locked to the said sleeve 22 as shown in Figure 2. The opposite ends olf this feed screw 26 are journalled in bearings carried by the ends of the bracket arms 'i9 and one end thereo'l2 has a bevel gear 29 fixed thereto in lposition to have its teeth meshed with a second bevel gear 30. vThe latter gear rotated through the instrumentality oi" a hand wheel T he drive shaft 28 is rotated by means of a motor 32 disposed on a motor support 33 which is fixed to and movable with the bracket socket 14C. Connection between the shaft 23 and the motor shaft is procured by a Worm B4 on the latter and the worm gear 35 slidably splined to the former. As clearly shown in Figure 4 when the sleeve 22 and the shaft 23 are movable longitudinally, the latter is slidable through the hub of the gear 35, but operative relation is maintained in View of the spline 36.
The end oi' the drive shaft 23 remote from the Worm gear 35 has a threaded collar 37 locked thereto and is adapted to receive a suitable Work carrying 'form (not shown). Located between this threaded collar 37 and the adjacent end of the sleeve 22 and secured to the latter to be held in nonrotative position is a hub 38 oi' a Work holding frame 39. As shown in Figure l this trame 39 is substantially rectangularI and in the side opposite that in which the hub 38 is mounted there is disposed a second hub 40. This latter hub provides a bearing for a spindle 4l, which is slidable therethrough, the inner end of said spindle having a Werl; engaging clamp head 42 By means oi' the spindle 4l the-clamp head 42 can be moved toward or away from the threaded collar 37 and When its linner limit of movement is reached it is locked by the disposition of a laterally extending handle 43 in' the notch of a latch plate 44. v
When a machine constructed in accordance with my invention is to be operated, the articleto bepolished is secured Within the frame 39 by being disposed on the hereini before mentioned `form which is threaded on the collar 37 and clamped thereagainst by means of the head 42. lnasmuch as the collar 37 is secured to the shaft 23 and the head 40 is rotatable, the article to be polished will .be rotated within the relatively stationary frame 39 by means of the motor 32. During the rotation of said article, the same and the frame 39 is readily movable outwardly away from the supporting bracket 13 by turning the hand Wheel 3l. `tating the hand wheel 13 which turns the enarticle to be polished and its trame 39 can be procured. ln other Words, the pivoted frame 4 and all of the mechanism of the table ll. can be rocked upon the pivot shaft 5. Any one or all oi' these different movements can be obtained selectively, independently or simultaneously, at the will ci' the operator.
From the immediate foregoing description, it will be obviousv that this improved butling and polishing machine is capable of substantially universal movement, thus rendering in applicable to many lrinds of Work Which heretofore had to he performed on diiferent machines with the consequent loss of time and considerable expense. Various changes may be made in the'diierent parts oi the invention and in its manner off' use, Without departing from or sacrilicing any of the advantages.

ln a device of the class described, the com bination of a rotary shaft, a sleeve enveloping said shaft terminating short of the ends ot said shaft, a hub secured to vsaid shaft, a rectangular frame, one side oi' said frame being rigid with said hub, second hub rigid with said frame oppositely disposed and in alinement With said iirst mentioned hub, said second hub having an apertore therein, a stem slidable in said aperture, a handle laterally projecting from said stem, a latch plate having a notchfor the Vreception of said handle, and avvorlrengaging head on said stem inwardly disposed With respect to said second mentioned'hub tovWards said first mentioned hub.
