OVEN ILLUMINAEGR.
Application led `October 25, 192i.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JorrN Messori, a citizen of the United States, residing at San rancisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oven Illuminators, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to improvements in cook stoves or ranges and has particular reference to means for illuminating the oven chambers of said stoves or ranges.
rilhe back of the oven chamber of the ordinary cook stove or range is usually dark, making it diiiicult to obtain a clear view of the rear part of the chamber and often requiring the use of some means of illumination when it is desired to view the back of the oven. Accordingly the primary object of this invention is to provide a novel meansv for illuminating the oven chamber of a stove with the light derived from the fire in the stove.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for illuminating the oven chamber of a stove, which means may be readily and easily incorporated with a cook stove and is arranged so that the oven may be illuminated at will and viewed when the door is closed or opened.
The invention possesses other advantages and features some of which, with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the present specification. ln said drawings l have shown one form of the construction of my invention, but it is to be understood that l do not limit myself to such form since the invention as expressed in the claims may be embodied in a plurality of forms.
Referring to the drawings:
F ig. l is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a stove constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
F ig. 3 is a perspective vi-ew of one of the elements of the invention.
Referring particularly to the drawings, l designates a cook stove of the type adapted for burning coal or wood, or oil wherein Serial No. 510,251.
there is provided the usual lire bon: 2 contiguous with an oven chamber the latter having the customary door a.
in carrying out my invention l provide a construction which will permit of the passage of the light from a fire in the lire bonr into the oven chamber, thru the wall or partition separating the fire boi; from the chamber. ln practice, l preferably form in said wall or partition, which latt is designated 5, an opening or a series or openii 6, preferably the latter, the said openii being located adjacent the upper side of the oven chamber and towards the rear thereof. ln case of a series of openings, said openings will be arranged in a horizontal row, the main requirement being that suflicient of an opening be provided to permit the necessary light to enter the chamber so as to provide for properly illuminating the. same.
in order to prevent the dust, ashes, cinders and the like from entering the oven chamber thru the openings 6, i provide a guard member 7 which is in the forni of a plate and is mounted within the fire bof; E2 so as to extend from the top of the partition wall 5 down to the level of floor of the ash-pit 8, in Close but spaced relation te said wall 5. Preferably the upper end of this guard member i' is curved` as at 9 so that it will contact with the uppe1 portion of said wall 5, whereas, the remaining portion of the guard is spaced throughout from said wall. .The guard provided adjacent its upper edge with a series of openings "f tij n UlAV L\1 which register with the openings Below the series of openings 6 there is provideiil another opening or a series of openings il. the upper portion of .i ch will register with the openings (5. The guard plate may be formed with openings of any character and arrangement, provided that said open ings will permit of the light from the fire to pass therethru, thru the openings 6 and into the oven chamber. The guard member 7 in being spaced from the wall 5 and having a curved part 9 in which the openings l0 are formed, will cause the soot, ashes and thev like, having a tendency to fall, to drop thru the openings l() and fall into the ash-pit in the space between the front and wall 5. Accordingly the lower edge of the plate is cut away as at 13 so as to permit of the ashes and the like to sift into the pit 8. This arrangement prevents the openings lli" becomingl dogged With ashes, oinders and the lilre and insures the passage oi ligiht rays thru the openings 6 and into the oyen. Although not shown in the drawings, the ordinary stove lire box is provided with a wall olE thiol; east iron between the thin partition Wall. l) and fire born-so as 'to prevent the burning out ol the thin sheet metal partition. ln carrying out iny invention, ll substitute 'ier this protesting- Wall the gue-.rd plate 7 which serves the purpose of said wall and has its own function with relation 'to this invention.
To Control the illumination oiI the oven there is provided a slide ineinber 13 arranged in the manner ot a damper and inoun upon ruidos lll Within the oyen Chamber. lhis nieniber lil is torined with openings l5 adapted to be nioved into and out olf i tation with the openings (3.
" the i'neinber 13 is effected (1 n n thru a od or snnilar element 16 which extends out 'trein said ineinber 1,3 thru an opening` or recess li' 'lornied in the trarne 18 Ylior therloor 4l.) there being' a nob 18 on the outer end of the rod so that it may be grasped in inanipulatingi the slide. rlhe openings l5 are closed by transparent panes 19 termed ot glass or isinp'lass so as 'to exclude the smoke and products of combustion from the oyen chamber.
For the purpose ot' viewino' the interior of the oie-n when the door is closed, there is provided a peep hole Q() in the upper edge of the door, which hole is preferably Closed by metal or other opaque swinging elosure 2l. The ilosuro may be li'lited or nioyed so -as to 'unf-orsi.' the peep hole at will. The hole Q has a glass or isinglass pane 22 therein.
lt will tlA sbe seen that when a stove is equipped with illuminating); means oi' my invention, it is only necessary to grasp the slide rod and maniijiulate the saine so as to eause the openings l in the slide to register with the openinfg` and the light trein the lire in the lire box will enter and illuminate the oven whereby a thorough view of the entire oyen chamber may be had. It it is desired not to open the door to obtain such a View thorough View may be had by lool(- ing thru the peep hole.
l claim:
l. The combination with a stove having a lire box and an oven chamber, of a Wall sep'- mating;l said lire box and oyen chamber, nieans proyidingi tor illumination of the interior oli the oyen chamber with the light reflected by a lire in said lire box and excluding sinolze and ashes from the lire box and ineens provifflingi ttor the entranee ot the light inte or the exclusion tliereolZ troni the oven ohauiber at will.
Q. fr oooh store liaif'inp' an oyen Chamber, a .tire box, and a. Wall' .seprating` the eharn ber and tire box, said Wall having an opentherein covered by a glass pane arranged to permit light from a `re in the box to enter and illuminate one oven eliainher and e1;- eludingi' sinolre and ashes foin the oyen.
