ttt titfi BENJAMIN E. LAEVEENCE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
B'IENU-CARD HOLDER.
Application filed July 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN E. Law- .nnnon, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Menu-Card itiiolders, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf holdand particularly holders for menu cards and the like, such as shown in Patents 970,399, September 13, 1910, and 1,014,108, January 16, 1912, issued to Walter H. Sawyer.
The main object of this invention is to provide a menu card holder including hinged cover members having an improved form and arrangement of fastening means of simple and durable construction for de tachably securing thereto a folded menu card which is formed at its crease to cooperate with the fastening means.
An illustrative embodiment of this inven tion is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a plan of a menu card holder embodying this invention, showing the cover members in open position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top view of the holder showing a leaf inserted therein.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged view in elevation of the improved fastening means.
In the form shown, the holder includes a pair of cover members hinged to a back, on which is mounted improved fastening means in the form of hooks, which are arranged for engagement with apertures in the crease of a folded menu card to be inserted between the cover members. The cover memhers are preferably fori'ned to provide frames for supporting advertising cards and menu cards containing lists of special items in addition to those which appear on the folded menu card.
Referring to the drawings, the holder comprises a pair of cover members 1 hinged to a back 2, on which is mounted a pair of fastening hooks 3, for engagement with apertures 1 formed in the crease of a folded menu card 5 to be inserted in the holder.
As illustrated, each of the cover members comprises channel- shaped sections 6 and 7 which are secured together by rivets 8 and arranged to form a frame for a pair of celluloid or other transparent sheets 9 for enclosing an advertising card or a special 1922. Serial No. 574,860.
menu card, not shown, which is adapted for insertion between the celluloid sheets. T he edges of the transparent sheets 9 and advertising card are seated in the channel sections 6 and T and are secured against displacement by rivets 10 extending through the section 7.
The frame sections 7 are formed with tubular parts 11 arranged to receive a pair of Ushaped pivot pins 12 for pivotally connecting the covers 1. to the back in the form shown, the back comprises a narrow flat strip of metal having its ends rounded and extending slightly beyond the upper and lower edges of the cover me1nbers 1. The projecting rounded ends of the back 2 prevent the sharp inner corners of the channel sections 6 from coming in contact with and marring the surface of the table or other support on which the holder may be placed. Formed in the back 2 adjacent its ends, are a pair of apertures 13, through which extend the U-shaped pivot pins 12 in oppositely disposed relation so that their ends extend inwardl into the tubular parts 11 of the cover sections 7. This arrangement of the pivot pins 12 permits the cover members 1 to be folded upon each other in either direction without injury to the parts.
As illustrated, the fastening hooks 3 are formed integral with the back 2 and are ar ranged adjacent opposite ends thereof, with the free ends of the hooks pointed toward one end of the back 2, so as to permit the apertures r of the loose leaf to pass over both hooks by a substantially straight line movement of the leaf. The inner edges of the hooks 3 are spaced from the back 2 to form retaining parts lei, which are curved slightly to facilitate the insertion of the leaf.
In order to secure the leaf against removal from the holder without either tearing or distorting the leaf, locking shoulders 15 are formed on the inner ends of the hooks '3 in spaced relation to the back 2. The shoulders 15 are spaced farther from the back 2 than the retaining parts 14, so that, when the leaf is held between the back 2 and the retaining parts 14 of both hooks, it cannot he slipped over the shoulders 15 without distorting it sufiiciently at both hooks to lift the leaf. over both shoulders simultaneously.
This form of fastening means is simple and durable in construction and effective and overcomes the necessity for the use of the objectionable elastic bands which have heretofore been used for securing the menu cards to the holder.
The operation of inserting a loose leaf into the holder is believed to be clear from the foregoing description.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted Without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A loose leaf holder comprising a back having a pair of cover members hinged thereto, and a pair of hooks on said back for engagement with apertures in a leaf to be inserted in the holder, both of said hooks being disposed in a single plane, said hooks being spaced apart longitudinally of said back and having their free ends pointed in the same direction so as to permit the leaf to be inserted by movement in the opposite direction and be held between said hooks and back. I
2. A loose leaf holder comprising a back having a pair of cover members hinged thereto, and a pair of spaced hooks rigidly mounted on said back for engagement With apertures in a leaf to be inserted in the holder, both of said hooks being disposed entirely in a single plane, said hooks extending longitudinally of said back and having their free ends spaced from the back and pointed toward one end thereof so as to permit the leaf to be inserted by movementin the opposite direction and be held between said hooks and back.
3. A loose leaf holder comprising a back having a pair of cover members hinged thereto, a pair of hooks extending longitudinally of said back for engagement with apertures in a leaf to be inserted in the holder, both of said hooks being located en-' tirely in a single plane disposed longitudinally of said back, said hooks having their free ends pointed in the same direction and spaced from said back to form guides to permit the leaf to be inserted by movement in the opposite direction and be held between said hooks and back, and shoulders formed on the opposite ends of said hooks and arranged to secure the leaf against accidental disengagement from said hooks.
i. A loose leaf holder comprising a back having a pair of cover members hinged thereto, a pair of spaced hooks arranged on said back for engagement with apertures in a leaf to be inserted in the holder, the inner edges of said hooks being formed to provide retaining parts in spaced relation to said back, said retaining parts being disposed in the same plane, the free ends of paid hooks being pointed in the same direction and arranged. to guide the leaf for in sertion between said retaining parts and back, and shoulders formed on the opposite end of said hooks, said shoulders being spaced farther from said back than said retaining parts so as to secure the leaf against accidental disengagement from said hooks.
5. A menu card holder comprising a back, a pair of U-shaped pivot pins extending through said back adjacent its ends, a pair of hinged cover members mounted on said pivot pins, a pair of spaced hooks rigidly mounted on said back for engagement with apertures in a leaf to be inserted in the holder, the inner edges of said hooks being formed to provide retaining parts in spaced relation to said back, said retaining parts being located in a single plane disposed longitudinally of said back, the free ends of said hooks being pointed toward one end of said back and being arranged to form guides for guiding the leaf for insertion between said retaining parts and back, and shoulders formed 011 the opposite end of said hooks, said shoulders being spaced farther from said back than said retaining parts so as to secure the leaf against accidental disengagement from said hooks.
Signed at Chicago this 10 day of July,
' B. a. LAlVRENCE.
