IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,371, dated November 4,4873; application filed October 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES THORNTON, Of Wellsville, and EMMIT G. LATTA, of Friendship, both in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Hames, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to the construction of the upper portion of hames, where the leather strap which connects the upper ends is attached.
The common mode of securing the upper ends of the hames is by means of a strap passing around the hames and through loops or staples fastened therein, which serve to retain the strap against vertical displacement, the strap, according to this method, being arranged vertically edgewise, with its edges resting on the upper end of the collar. The most desirable method of connection, although not so common, is to connect the strap with the hames so as to permit the strap to rest with its flat side on the collar. It is also essential that the connection of the strap with the hames be such as to allow of its adjustment higher or lower on the hames, to adapt the hames to collars of different sizes. Our invention relates more particularly to an improved construction of hames for facilitating the attachment and adjustment of the coupling-strap when the latter is arranged in the manner last described.

When this strap is disconnected from the loops they can then be shifted to any other of the corrugations as may be required. The outer or last outward-projecting corrugations e are made higher than the others so as to serve as stops to prevent the loops 0 from becoming entirely disconnected from the corrugations, the space between the inner edge of the hame and the loop, when the hame-strap is removed, not being suflicient to allow the loop to slide over these outer projections e, while it is suflicient to permit the loop to freely pass over the intermediate projecting corrugations. While the loops b in Fig. 4 permit the passage of a strap through them and around the hame, the lesser holes between the corrugated plate and the hame, shown in Figs. 1 and 3, will permit the passage of the bolt of a small clevis or other attachment for the hame-strap, if the same is desired.
What we claim as our invention is- 1. The strap corrugated and applied to the hame so as to present exterior and interior corrugations for the loop, strap, or clevis-bolt, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, with a hame and loop, 0, of a corrugated strap or plate which has the outer or extreme corrugation e projecting beyond the intermediate ones so as to form stops.
