Description

N'. n. STREETER.
Last-Block F'asteners..
Patented NM 4,1873.
I WV EJV'TOR Mama/m UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
NELSON It. STREEIER, OF GROTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAST-BLOCK FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,368, dated November 4, 1873; application filed October 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1., NnLsoN It. STREETER, of Groton, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Last-Block Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in last-block fasteners; and it consists in a pivoted latch, secured to the rear end of the block, which has an enlarged head on its inner end, and which catches in a suitable opening, formed in the top of the last, in such a manner as to bind the block securely in position, and yet be capable of being easily and quickly undone.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the last, and b the block, which are fitted together in the usual manner. In the rear end of the block is formed alongitudi nal groove, 0, which connects with a recess, (1, formed in the under side of the block. In this groove is pivoted, by means of a pin, 0, which passes through the block from side to side, the latch g, which consists of a short flat bar, having an enlarged head on its inner end.
In the top of the lastis formed an inclined hole or opening, 11, of sufficient size to'receive the head of the latch, and leading into this hole is a groove, 1, to receive the stem of the latch when it is depressed, so as to catch the opening 13. After the block and last have been put together, the outer end 0 of the clasp is moved forward and upward, so as to depress the inner headed end, which is forced downward, so as to catch in the hole 13 in the top of the last, and thus bind the two parts firmly and securely together.
When it is desired to unfasten them, the outer end of the latch is drawn backward, which causes the inner end to rise up out of the recess in the last into the one in the under side of the block.
I claim- The last-block b, with a recess, ,d, and the pivoted latch g, having an enlarged head or projection, in combination with the last a, having an opening in its top to receive the head of the latch, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of October, 1873.
NELSON R. STREETER.
