be given the ice man as to how much ice is required without compelling the ice man to leave his wagon and call at the house to inquire asv to the amount of ice required and then return to the wagon to deliver the ice.
An apparatus to accomplish purposes siniilar tothe above is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a front view of a display apparatus with the sign attached and also showing, in dot and dash lines, how the apparatus appears when the sign is closed t0 view; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus without a sign; Fig. 3 is a side viewv of Fig. 2; Fig. t is an end view of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a section on line 6--6 of Fig. 2. y
Similar reference numerals refer to siinilar parts throughout the views.
The apparatusv disclosedV in the drawing is composed of the bracket 10, the arm 11, the sign holder 12, and the sign 13. l
The bracket 10, preferably made oi' .sheet metal stamping, has the opening 14, openings 15, the lock ears 16 and 17, and the bar fil 18. the main body of the bracket substantially as shown and are closer together at the top than the width of the arm 11 but further apart at the bottom than the width of the arm 11; the purpose whero will appear hereinafter.
The arm 11, preferably made of sheet metal stamping, has the eye 19 bent around the bar 18 to form a hinge joint, and also has the depressed or embossed rib 20 'for the purpose of stitening the arm 11.
The sign holder 12, preferablyi made ot sheet metal stamping, has the pointed ears 21 i-or the purpose ot piercing and hold- In many instances, ice delivery for in-v stance, it is desirable that some iniormationy The ears 16 and 17 are bent up ironii ing the-sign-i, has the depressed or einbossed humps 22 on the under side .and located so that the edge oi eachhump coincides with the edges of the arm11 as seenj-V iii Figs. 1 and 2;v the purpose therefor will appear hereinafter. `The sign holder 12 also has a central opening through which the swivel pin 23y passes. This-pin serves the purpose oi securing the sign holder 12 to the armv 11 in such a manner that the sign holder 12 may swivel or turn thereon.
The sign 18, in 'this instanceinade-,otfcard` board, 'has the figures 10, 15,20, I30, 4:0, 5,0,
7 5, andV 100 and is secured to the sign holder 12 by piercingthe saine withtheears 21 and then bending the'ends 2110i the ears 21 down upon `the sign, thereby holding the sign firmly to the sign holder.V l
Concerning the operation o''f the apparatus shown and described: When the apparatus is made up as shown and having the sign'` attached as shown, the bracket 10 is secured to sonie convenient support by means oi screws passing through the openings. 15. 1n
- the drawing, the apparatus is shown vin a vertically operative position but a horizontal or other position maybe adapted since the sign can bev rotated. Ti/Vh'enit is-desired to display the figure 10 forl instance, the-sign is rotated until the `1g iire".107 is located near the outer endof the arm 11 las shown in Fig. 1; the arm 11- is then swivelled`` up-` ward on the pivotL 19 until the'sides of the arm 11 touch: the upper curved portionsot the `lock ears 17 a slight pressure against the iront oi' the arm '11 will cause thevupper ends of the ears 17 to spring apart and permit the 'arni 11'to pass theA narrow space between the top ot the ears andlodge in the wider lspace between the ears 17 below the upper curves.- As soon asthearm 11 has passed the narrow spacebetween the topv of the ears 17,'the' upper-portions ofA thesel ears will tend tov springbaclr to their original position andthereby wedge the arm 11 inward'and hold it there due tothe angue lar disposition ofthe ears 17.
lfVhen it is desired to display no sign, the arm 11 is swivelled downward by pulling outwardly on the arm'll to overcome the spring of the ears 17 and to release the ico` lock and then swivelling the arm way down until the sides thereof touch the upper curved portion of the lock ears 16; a'slight pressure on the arm inwardly will then lool; 'the same in the lower and closed po-.
sition similar to the lock in the upper position previously described.
`When it is desired to display -a ligure other than the ld shown, figure 20 'tor instance, rotate the sign holderI l2 on the swivel pin 23 until the figure 20 is nearest the outer end of the arin ll. vlt will be noted that when rotating the sign holder l2 one or more of the humps 22 inust pass over the arm il and some pressure must be applied tospriiig ythe outer portions ot the sign holder l2 upward to permit these humps to pass over the arm. Then these humps have passed over the arm, the outer portions oit' the sign holder tend to spring haci; to their original. position and the humps `will lay alongside or the sides ol the arm and hold the sign holder iu position. YWhen the figure 20 is nea-r the outer end oi the arm, the hump 22 will talre the position ot the hump 22? shown in Fig. l and the remaining humps `Will take corresponding positions. lt will be vseen that the edges of the humps touch the sides ot the' arm and hold the sign holder in position; the sign can not be changed or rotated unless some pressure is applied.
Villien it is desired to display the ligure the sign holder is rotated as previously7 described until the figure 30 is near the outer end ot the arm ll; in this instance the humps 22h and 22 will engage the depression of the embossed rib 2() and hold the sign holder in position.
The apparatus shown and described provides a convenient display apparatus which automatically locks itself in either open or closed position, which automatically locks the sign in adjusted position, Which is economical oi construction, land etlicient in operation. Y
The apparatus shown and described may be modified in various manners and the sign shown may be substituted for other sign withoutfdeparting from the spirit ot this invention.
Without limiting myself to the precise construction shown and described,
l claim: j
