PATENT OFFICE.
MONTE WELSH, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
PHOTOGRAPHIG-PRINTING MACHINE.
Application filed April 23, 1920. Serial No. 376,037.
[0 all whom it may concern:
' Be'it known that I, MONTE \VnLsir, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Photographic-Frinting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a photographic printing apparatus, of that general form shown in my prior Patent No. 1,186,719, granted on the 13th dayof June, 1916.
The device forming the subject matter of this application contemplates general improvements in the structure shown in my former patent, these improvements being made manifest as the description is proceed ed with.
Specifically, one object of the invention is to provide novel means for pressing the mask against the film or negative.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the film may be. raised and lowered, so that the film will cooperate with the opening in the mask.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for operating and controlling a ground glass which serves to diffuse the light.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for operating the switch which controls the current to the lamp.
The invention aims, further, as above intima-ted, to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type hereinafter described.
WVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, itbeing understood that. within the scope of what is claimed. changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side eleva tion, a device constructed in accordance with the invention. parts being broken away and parts appearing in section; Figure 2 is atop plan of the machine; Figure 3 is an end elevation: Figure 4 is a sectional detail showing prcsser block which is carried by one of the hinged leads; Figure 5 is an elevation showing in detail, parts of the paper holding mecha nism; Figure 6 is an elevation looking at the negative support, parts of the device having been removed; Figure 7 is a. sectional detail showing a portion of the means whereby the film is guided and controlled, the view depicting the relation existing between the mask, the film and the panel; Figure 8 is a detail showing the switch; Figure 9 is a fragmental vertical section, parts being omitted and broken away; and Figure 10 is a fragmental elevation showing a portion of the paper holding means.
In the drawing, there appears a base 1, carrying an upstanding negative holder 2 in the form of a plate or board having an opening 3. A recess 4 is formed in the holder 2 about the opening?) and in the recess, a panel 5, preferably a glass plate, is seated, the panel being held in place by buttons 6 on the holder 2. Spring arms 7 are attached at 8 to the base 1 and tend to press against the holder 2. Studs 23 are mounted in the arms 7 and extend slidably through the negative holder 2, nuts 2st being mounted on the studs, and compression springs 25 being interposed between the nuts and the holder 2. The tendency of the springs 25, obviously, is to draw the arms 7 toward the holder 2, it being possible to adjust the effort of the springs 25, by rotating the nuts 24. Referring to Figure 7 it will be observed that the arms, 7 are supplied with guides 9 disposed adjacent to the negative holder 2. The arms 7 are provided with vertical sockets 12 adapted to receive beads 11 on the edges of a mask 10, the beads being inserted downwardly into the sockets. The numeral 14 denotes a film, passing across the guides 9 and extended between the mask 10 and the panel 5.
A means is provided whereby the film 1 1;
may be raised and lowered, to locate the film .properly with respect to the opening 35 in the mask 10. With this end in view, guide plates 15 are attached to the edges of the negative holder 2 by securing elements 16, slides 17 being mounted to reciprocate between. the guide plates 15 and the edges of the negative holder, the slides having elongated slots, wherein the securing elements 16 are received. The slides 17 having projecting hook-shaped brackets 19 and are supplied with racks 2'0 meshing into pinions 21 carried. by a shaft 22 mounted to rotate on the negative holder Q'and supplied with a knob 26 whereby the shaft may be manipulated conveniently.
It will be understood that when the shaft 22 is rotated by means of the knob 26, the pinions 21 cooperating with the racks 20, will raise or lower the slides 17, the brackets 19 carrying the film 14c upwardly and downwardly, and locating the film properly with regard to the opening in the mask 10.
One improvement contemplated in this application, is the provision of means whereby the mask 10 may be pressed against the film 14. The means above alluded to comprises a pair of bearing brackets 27 mounted on the holder 2, a shaft 28 being journaled in the brackets. A loop-shaped spring 29 is carried by the shaft 28 and supportsa, presser arm 30, adapted to engage the mask 10. A latch 31 is mounted on the negative holder 2 and is supplied with a seat 32 adapted to engage a crank 33 at one end of the shaft 28, the other end of the shaft being supplied with a crank 34:.
In operation. rotation may be imparted. to the shaft '28 through the instrumentality of the crank 34:. the member 30 being pressed against the mask 10 and the spring 29 being put under tension. -When the shaft- 28 is rotated as aforesaid, the crank 33 inter locks with the seat 32 of the latch 31 and thus the member 30 is held yieldingly but firmly against the mask 10 so as to press the mask against the film lat and to hold the film between the mask and the transparent panel As in my prior patent hereinbefore mentioned, a main leaf 36 is hinged at 37 to the base 1, an auxiliary leaf 38 being hinged at 39 to the upper edge of the main leaf 36. A shaft 40 is mounted to rock in bearings 41 on the base 1 and is provided with a. crank %2 connected by a pitman 43 with the aux iliary leaf 38, there being a buffer 44 on the base 1, wherewith the pivotally connected ing studs 51 slidably mounted in the leaf 38 and provided with nuts 52 cooperating with the outer surface of the said leaf. Compression springs 53 surround the studs 51 and abut against the leaf 38 and against the back plate 50, the springs serving to advance the back plate. The back plate is supplied along its opposite edges with flanges 54: and The numeral 5% marks a presser head supplied on one surface with a pad 5'? and carrying, upon its opposite surface, a plate 58 having fingers 59 adapted to be received raaaaoa in openin s in the flange of the back plate 50. Late ics 60 are mounted to swing on thepresser head 56 and are united by a connecting strip 62, one latch 60 having a handle 61.
The finger 55) may be inserted through the flange 55, the latches (50 being operated through the instrumcntality of the handle 64) and the connecting strip 6:2. both latches engaging the back plate 50 as clearly shown in Figure at, the latches engaging the back plate adjacent to the flange 5a, against. which one edge of the plate 58 abuts. The presser head 56 is connected releasably with the plate 50 and is yieldingly supported, by the springs 53, with respect to the leaf.
The sensitized paper is held. by a means to be described hereinafter, on the pad 57 of the presser head 56, and the sensitized paper may be pressed against the mask 10 by depressing the free end of the lever 47 and engaging the lever with the latch 49, a rocking movement being imparted by the crank lfrto the shaft 40, the crank 42 and the pitman 43 swinging the leaves 36 and 38 until the prcsser head 56 exercises its function as hereinbefore explained, the springs 53 serving to support the presser head yieldingly.
A clamp plate 65 slides in contact with one edge of the prcsser head 56 and is provided with a flange 66 cooperating with the working surface of the presser head, that is. with the pad 5?.to hold the papers thereagainst. The clamp plate 65 has inclined slots 37 receiving guide pins 68 mounted in the edge of the presser head 56. A shaft 69 is mounted to rock in bearings 70 on the outer surface of the prcsser head 56 and is provided with an intermediate finger 71 adapted to cooperate with a cam 72 carried by the leaf 36. The shaftfiS has a crank arm "Iii connected by a link 7% with the clamp L i. .i spring is connected at one end presser head 56 and is connected at its other end with the finger 71. The spring 75 tends to rock the shaft 69 in the bearings ill. the crank arm 73 and the link 74: drawing the clamp plate 65 endwise. a transverse movement being imparted thereto by the slots 65 and the pins (38. the flange 66 thus being made to cooperate with the pad 57 and to hold one edge of the sensitized paper.
In operation. after the printing has been completed. and after the leaf 38 has been swung downwardly and 'backwardly from the position of Figure 1, the finger 71 cooperates with the cam 72 and rocks the shaft otbthe arm 73 and the link 74 operating the clamp plate so that its flange 66 no longer grips the paper. The paper, therefore, is released when the leaves 38 and 36 swung backwardly by the operation of the lever +17 and attendant parts. The guide plate 76 may extend along one edge of the presser head 56, at right angles to the clamp plate 56, the guide plate 76 being in the form of an angle member if desired. One flange of the clamp plate "7 slides, as indicated in Figure 5. between the corresponding flange of the guide plate 76 and the presser head 56. securing elements 78 connecting the guide plate 76 with the presser head, and one flange of the clamp plate being slidably mounted on the securing elements. hen the leaf 38 and the presser head 56 are ad vanced toward the negative holder the transverse flange of the clamp plate 77 cooperates with the pad 57 to aid in holding the paper; the clamp plate '77 being released, as soon as the presser head 56 and the leaf 38 are swung backwardly away from the negative holder 2.
A casing 79 is connected with the base 1 and the negative holder 2, the base and the negative holder constituting, to all intents and purposes, a part of the casing. Adjacent its upper edge and upon its sides, the casing 79 is provided with ventilating openings 80 which also serve to permit the operator to look into the interior of the casing. The casing T9 includes a top 81 to which a lid 82 is hinged as shown at 83, the lid having an extension 8% connected thereto by hinges the extension 8st forming an inclined front for the casing, to the rear and above the negative holder :2. Guides 86 are carried by the lid 82 and in the guides 86, a slide 67 is mounted for reciprocation. A shaft 68 is journaled in the lid 62 and is provided .with an exposed. handle 89. The inner end of the shaft 88 terminates in an arm 90 having a finger 91 mounted to move in a slot 93 formed in the slide 87. The guide 87 carries lamps 92.
It will be understood that when the shaft- 88 is operated by means of the handle the slide 87 may be moved forvv'arlly and backwardly, so as to position the lamps 92 properly, with respect to the negative and the sensitized paper.
A shaft 9 extends transversely of the casing 79 and is journaled therein. Vithin the casing 79, a shaft 9st carries a frame supporting a plate or screen 96, made of frosted glass or any other suitable material. Externally of the casing 79 the shaft 94 carries a. handle 97.
By means of the handle 97, the shaft 94 may be rotated, the frame 95 swinging the plate or screen 96 with respect to the lamps 92, so as to diffuse the light with respect to the negative.
The extension 84 of the lid 82 is irovided with inwardly projecting flanges 98 to which. a screen 99 is pivoted or hinged as indicated at 100. The screen may be swung backwardly and upwardly against the extension 841, as shown in Figure 9, and be held in that position by frictional engagement with projections 101 on the flanges 98.
If desired, the screen or-shield 99 may be swung downwardly into the dotted line po' sition of Figure 9 and when thus disposed, serves to protect the eyes of a person looking into the machine or watching the printing operation. The shield 99 is of peculiar utility when a negative is not wide enough to extend entirely across the opening 3 in the holder 2.
A lamp 102 is mounted on the rear portion of the casing 79 and is in circuit by means of a conductor 103, with the lamps 9:2. In the conductor 103 is interposed a knife switch mounted on the lower portion of the negative holder 2. The knife switch as indicated in Figure 8 may include a contact member 105 and a. pivotally mounted blade 106 constrained by a spring 107 into open-circuit relation with respect to the contact 105, the numeral 108 denoting a base in which a plunger 109 slides, the plunger being adapted to cooperate with one end of the lever 106. The plunger 109 extends through the negative holder 2 and is slidably mounted therein, the rear end of the plunger lying in the path of the leaf 36, as shown best in- Figure 1 of the drawings.
\Vhen the leaf 36 is swung upwardly and forwardly, the leaf advances the plunger 109, the lever 106 is swung into engagement with the contact 105, and thus the circuit, including the lamps 102 and 92 is closed. As soon, however, as the leaf 36 is swung baclnvardly. the plunger 109 is released. and the lever 106, under the compulsion of the spring 107 breaks contact with the member 105, and opens the lamp circuit. The lamps, therefore, burn only so long as the leaves 36 and 38 and the presser member 56 remain in advanced positions.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a. device of the class described, a. base; a negative holder on the base; a main leaf hinged to the base; a presser member cooperating with the negative holder; means for connecting the presser member with the main leaf for hinged movement with respect to the main leaf; means for producing swinging movement of the main leaf with respect to the base and for producing swinging movement of the presser member with respect to the main leaf; a paper clamp movable on the presser member; a cam on the main leaf; a shaft mounted to rock on the presser member and provided with a tinger cooperating with the cam; and means for connecting the shaft operatively with the paper clamp.
2. In a device of the class described a negative holder; a shaft journaled thereon and provided at its ends with cranks, one crank being an operating crank; a resilient presser arm cooperating with the holder and carried by the shaft; and a latch mounted on the holder, the latch cooperating with the other crank to hold the presser arm in cooperating relation with respect to the holder.
3. In a device of the class described, a
casing including a hingedly mounted front member, and including enegetive holder located below the front member; and a shield hinged to the front member and adapted to he swung down into overlapping relation with respect to the negative holder, the front member and the shield having coopereting shield is swung parts serving to retain the shield When the upwardly ewey from the negative holder.
