IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14433 8, dated November 4, 187 3; application'filed September 13, 187.3.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSHUA S. J UDsoN, of Austin, in the county of Mower and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of my device as arranged for use; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of detachable pieces of the bed-bottom, showing the elastic springs and the method of connecting them to the frame and bottom.

The object of my invention is to provide a bed-bottom in two parts, so thatafter being used the bed shall not sag unevenly toward.

the center; and in so attaching said bottom to a frame or to a bedstead, by elastic rings or springs, that it will aiford an easy yielding support to the person or persons reclining upon it and it consists in m akin g the ordinary slatted bottom frame of cottage or other bedsteads in two equal longitudinal parts or sections, and in so affixing them to or connecting them with the frame to be placed in the bedstead, by means of elastic springs and hooks and eyes, that all these parts can be easily put together for use, and when thus arranged cannot easily be detached by any ordinary usage, but at the same time shall be capable of being readily separated for moving or cleaning, or any such desirable purpose, substantially as is. hereinafter more fully and particularly set forth.

I11 making my bed-bottom, I construct the two parts or sections of which it is made in any usual or ordinary manner of making the slat-bottom-that is, I attach to and secure upon the end pieces I) the slats in such a strong and durable way, by nails or mortise side pieces, or they may be fixed to or upon the bedstead by screws, or in any like manner, and thus form a part of the bedstead. IVhen these several parts are now arranged in'the bedstead, the elastic rings or springs secured to the end pieces on one side, and the hooks of the bed-bottom set intothem on the other, the

completed device will be ready for the usual bedding; and it will be found that this construction and arrangement of the several parts will afford a very comfortable couch.

The springs are so placed that they are affected by and readily yield to the slightest pressure. In addition to this, the long slats have a considerable vibrating motion when persons recline upon the bed; and. by this means, in addition to the above springs, my said device provides for every position of the body, and affords a yielding but firm support in every instance. Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s-- The sectional bed-bottom B, end pieces b, elastic springs D, hooks b, and eyes 0 and frame (J, when the several parts are constructed and adapted to operate in the. manner set forth.
