To all whom it may cancer it.
Be it known that It. Crmnnns C. Horn, a citizen of the United States. residing at Clarke, .in the county of Merrick and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Sharpeners; and it hereby declare that the following is a full. clear and exact description thereof. reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification. v j I v This invention is a novel mechanism for sharpening. disks of disk harrows and is particularly adapted for sharpening the harrow-disks while the harrow is in use.
The invention provides novel sharpening devices and novel means for supporting the sharpening devices on the harrow frame, so that the disks may be sharpened while the harrow i'sat work in the field if desired. The sharpening devices can also be used to sharpen the disks when the barrow is not in use. In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated a practical embodiment of the invention and will explain the same with reference thereto to enable others to understand and use the same; and have summarised in the claims the essentials of'the invention and the novel features of construction and novel combination of parts for which protection is desired.

The disk harrow may be of any suitable construction, an ordinary type being indicated in the drawings having a frame F of any desired kind and an axle A on which are mounted the harrow disks The sharpening devices comprise a main lever 1 which is pivoted on a stud 2 a tached to a support 2. The support 2 may be mounted adjacent the periphery of the disk D to be ground as hereinafter described or in any other suitable way.
The inner end ofthe lever 1 adjacent the disk D is provided with a transverse slot 1" for the accommodation of a cutting or grinding tool 3 which may be of any suitable kind and adapted to sharpen the disk Di the latter is revolved in contact with the tool. The tool is adapted to be brought into con tact with the periphery of the disk D as in dicated in the drawings and to grind the same while the disk is revolved. The tool 3 may be adjusted on the lever and may be fastened when. adjusted by means of a set screw 1 or other suitable means, which will hold the tool securely in position. The slot permits adjustment of the tool so that the cutting or grinding edge thereof will properly engage the periphery of the disk to be sharpened. Preferably the lever 1 is slotted at 1 so it may be adjusted longitudinally to bring the sharpening tool 3 into proper position relative to the periphery of the disk D which it is to sharpen. j

To the outer arm of the lever 4 is connected a rod 5 which is screw threaded and extends through an opening in the outer end of the lever 1. (in the threaded portion of the rod 5 is a hand nut 5 which is adapted to engage the lever 1 and by turning nut 5 the outer ends of the levers d, can be spread apart thus causing the roller and tool to clamp the edge of the disk between them, as indicated in Fig. 2. The block 2 may be supported on the harrow frame in any suitable manner. As shown the block is slidably mounted upon an angle bar 6 the ends of which are supported by blocks 6 mounted upon curved bars? which are bolted to a convenient part of the frame of the harrow, as indicated at 7* in Fig. 1. or otherwise suitably secured thereto.
The bars 7 are slotted as at 7" for the "passage of bolts (3 which transfixf the bars 6 and blocks 6, and extend through the slots 7" and are fastened by nuts 6 as shown. This construction enables the bar 6 to be set toward or away from the periphery of the disks D mounted on the axle A of the harrow.
Theslotted bars 7 are supported adjacent the bar 6 by means of'rods 8 which are hinged at their upper ends to brackets 8 attached to the upper part of the harrow frame, as shown or other suitable support. and their lower ends are threaded and passed through the slots 7 in bars '7 and are adjustably clamped. to bars 7 by means of nuts 8 and 8 strung on the lower threaded portions of the bars as shown.
Thebars 7 preferably have their slotted portions curved on arcs having hinges 8 as their center; and the slots 7" permit the sharpening devices to be adjusted toward or from the axis of the disks D so as to insure proper engagement of the sharpening devices with the periphery of the disks.
By loosening the nuts 6 the angle bar 3 and block 2 carrying the sharpening devices may be moved outwardly or inwardly away from or toward the periphery of the disks D.
The block 2 and the sharpening devices can be adjusted longitudinally of the bar 6, into position to engage any disk of the harrow, and operate to sharpen such disk as the harrow is being used in the field. hen the bar 6 and the block 2 are mounted upon the harrow frame the block 2 may be held in adjusted position by any suitable means, as by a set screw 2 indicated in Fig. 2 which engages the edge of the bar 6. Before attempting to adjust the sharpening devices the hand nut 5 should be turned so as to separate the tool 3 and the roller e, then the block 2 can be shifted to a position opposite the disk to be sharpened; then the block may be fastened in place, then after loosening the nut 2 the lever 1 may be adjusted so as to bring the tool 8 into proper position against the edge of the disk D, and then by turning the hand nut 5" the lever 4: may be positioned to cause roller 4? to hold the cutter with any desired pressure against the periphery of the disk D. When properly positioned it is obvious the disk D will be sharpened as it is rotated; and it may be so sharpened while the harrow is in use or when not in use by rotating the axle. It is obvious also that the devices might be used for sharpening the disks when removed from the axle or harrow frame.
If desired a helical expansion spring may be interposed between the hand wheel 5 and the end of the lever 1 so as to hold the roller 4 with a powerful but yielding pressure toward the tool 8 to compensate for any irregularities in the disk and unevenness in the periphery of the disk and tend to simplify the grinding operation.
This invention is especially designed for usein connection with disk harrows in which there are from let to 18 disks on a frame. The disks may be of three sizes, 16, 18 or 20 inches in diameter and the sharpener may be so adjusted as to sharpen any of the three sizes, and do it while at work in the field.
If desired a scraper 9 may be attached to the lever at adjacent the roller 4 so as to scrape the dirt away from the face of the disk in advance of the roller el. thus preventing dirt passing between the roller and the face of the disk and affecting the proper operation of the cutter. This scraper may be of any suitable kind, and preferably consists of a metal bar or plate attached to the lever 4 and having its ends bent as at 9' to form scrapers as indicated in Fig. 5.
The sharpener may be reversed by re moving the nut 2" and reversing the position of the parts 1 and elso that either right or left disk gang can be sharpened with the same sharpener. V hen the sharpener is first applied the nut 5" is turned so as to cause the roller and cutter to first engage and remove any thickened parts of the disk and cut the same away before the linal sharpening operation. The nut 5 should he turned at intervals so as to cause the cutter to more closely engage the edge of the disk.
The lever 1 may be provided with a rounded knob 1 on its surface engaging the under side of the nut 5" so that the nut 5" will always have a proper engagement therewith in any adjusted position of the lovers 1. and 4c.
One advantage of my disk sharpener over those in present use is the fact that the sharpener can be fastened to the harrow frame in such a manner that the disks are sharpened while at work in the field.
Obviously a plurality of such sharpening devices might be provided so that two or more of the disks might be simultaneously sharpened while the harrow is at work; or the disks may be sharpened by supporting the harrow frame so that the disk will be clear of the ground and then applying power to rotate the axle.
What I claim is:
1. A. harrow disk SllfilPOl'lOI. comprising a support. mounted on the harrow frame. a lever pivoted thereon. a tool attached to one end of said lever and adapted to engage the edge of the disk, a second lever pivoted on the first lever and supported thereby, a roller on one end of said second lever to engage the edge of the disk opposite the tool, a threaded rod pivotally connected to the outer end of one lever and transfixing the opposed end of the other lever, and an adjustable nut on said rod whereby the levers may be adjusted to the tool to engage the disk so that the disk can be sharpened as the harrow is operating.
2. A harrow disk sharpening means com prising a support mounted on the harrow frame,-a slotted lever pivotally mounted on the support, a tool. adj ustably connected with the inner end of said lever, a second lever pivotally mounted on the first lever adjacent the tool a roller on the inner end of the second lever. a rod pivotally connected with the outer end of one lever and passing through an. opening in the adjacent end of ill) the other lever, and an adjustable hand nut on said rod whereby the outer ends of the levers may be spread apart to cause the roller and tool to engage the disk, whereby the disk may be sharpened as the harrow is operating. v

7. A harroudisk sharpener, comprising a support attachable to the harrow frame, a lever pivoted thereon, a tool attached to one end of said lever and adapted to engage the disk, a second lever pivoted on the first lever and supported thereby, means on one end of the second. lever to engage the disk opposite the tool, and adjustable means between the outer ends of the levers whereby they may be caused to hold the tool in engagement with the disk whereby the disk may be sharpened as the harrow is operating.
8. A. harrow disk sharpening means comprising a support attachable to the harrow frame, a slotted lever pivotally mounted on the support, a tool adjustably connected with the inner end of said lever, a second lever pivotally mounted on the first lever adjacent the tool, a roller on the inner end of the second lever, and adjustable means between the outer end of the levers whereby they may be caused to hold the roller and tool. in engagement with the edge of a disk between them so that the disk can be sharpened as the harrow is operating.
9.111 combination with a disk harrow, a bar mounted on the harrow frame, a lever pivoted on the bar, a sharpening tool attached to one end of said lever adapted to engage the disk, a second lever pivoted on the first lever and supported thereby, means carried by said second lever toengage the disk opposite the tool, and adjustable means for forcibly separatingthe outer ends of the levers whereby they may be caused to hold the tool in operative engagement with the disk, whereby the disk may be sharpened as the harrow is operating.
