WILLIAM BLACKWOOD, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
PLUMBER/S FITTING.
Application filed June 27,
To cZZ who 1n it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM BLAOKWOOD,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lrontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbers Fittings, of which the following specification, reference being had there in to the accompanying drawings.
' The drain pipes of bath tubs, wash basins, urinals, sinks and the like are ordinarily provided with traps or air sealing devices con taining small bodies of water which prevent odors arising in such drain pipes, from the main drain pipes or sewers, from escaping into a bathroom or compartment. Furthermore, such drain pipes are ordinarily tapped into the waste pipe of a water closet bowl, between the bowl and the main drain pipe, and when the water closet bowl is flushed the rush of water through the waste pipe of the closet bowl produces a partial vacuum and partially, if not completely withdraws the water from, the trap or water sealing devices of the other fixtures in a bath room or closet. As a result, there is either a gurgling noise or the water is withdrawn from the trap allowing gases or obnoxious odors to escape into the bath room or closet.
My invention aims to provide a plumbing fixture to which drain pipes may be connected at such a point that it is practically impossible for the rush of water through the waste pipe of a closet bowl to produce a partial vacuum in the drain pipe, at least I the reduction of atmospheric pressure is not sufiicient to completely drain traps or cause a gurgling of water therein.
My plumbing fixture includes a novel form of. elbow or fitting to which a plurality of waste or drain pipes may be connected, and the fitting may be straight, angular or curved and still eliminate the gurgling noise often heard at bath room fixtures when a closet bowl is flushed.
The construction of the fitting will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of toilet fixtures having drain and waste pipes connected in accordance with my invention, and showing the dash lines in the usual manner of connecting the drain and waste pipes;
1921. Serial No. 480,564.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of my fitting, and
Fig. .3 is a plan of a portion of the same.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I show a water closet bowl or hopper 1 connected by a waste elbow pipe 2 to a main drain or sewer pipe 3. The toilet outfit also includes a bath tub 4 and a wash basin 5, both having traps 6 ordinarily connected by pipes 7 to the waste pipe 2 at some point below the elbow thereott, but I intend to tap these drain pipes into the elbow portion of the waste pipe 2 by providing a special form of elbow for the waste pipe.
Considering Figs. 2 and 3, the pipe 2 has an elbow 8 provided with an annular chamber 9 formed by an outer annular wall 1.0 and an inner annular wall 11, the wall 11 being concentric of the wall 10 and having an inturned flange 12 on which is seated the drain pipe or connection 13 of the closet bowl 1. The end of the pipe 13 is leaded or fixed to the elbow in the usual and well known manner.
The annular wall 10 of the elbow 8 cooperates with the annular wall 11 in inclosing the chamber 9 and the wall 10 is provided with a plurality of connections 14 to some of which may be connected the drain pipes 7, as shown in Fig. 1, while the other con nections may be plugged or additional toilet fixtures may be connected to the wall 10. Since the wall 11 is supported from the wall 10 there is necessarily a top wall 15 connecting the walls 10 and 11 and the chamber 9 is of sufficient area for a body of air to remain therein and also within the drain pipe 7 as far as the traps 6.
It is now apparent that when the closet bowl 1 is flushed there is no rush of water across the ends of the pipes 7, as would be the case if the pipes were tapped into the waste pipe 2, as shown by dash lines in Fig. 1, consequently a partial vacuum is not formed in the drain pipe 7 and the sealing water within the trap 6 is not disturbed. It is very seldom that the waste pipe 2 is completely filled with water and even though it should be completely filled it is only momentarily and not sutlicient to disturb the body of air between the waste pipe and the traps. i
The formation of the chamber 9 within theelbow 8 does not interfere with an installation of the elbow waste pipe in the usual manner, and by providing theconnections 14 the waste pipe will be standard for the greatest number of drain pipe connections required for a residence toilet, and i1 all of the connections let are not used, the unused connections are simply plugged and are always in place for any additions to a toilet, or drain pipes from elsewhere in a residence.
It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is l. A plumbers fitting comprising a pipe having a chamber in a plane above the axis of said pipe, said chamber having inner and outer walls connected by a top wall in a plane above the pipe, said inner wall being of less depth than said outer wall and affording a seat for an adjoining pipe, and the outer wall having connections in a plane above the bottom of the chamber.
2. In a plumbers fitting by which drain pipes of toilet fixtures are connected to a main drain pipe, and in which fitting a closet bowl drains ;means for preventing a partial vacuum being produced in said fitting by the drain of the closet bowl, said means comprising an elbow having a chamher by which the toilet fixtures may be connected to the elbow at a point above the drain of the closet bowl therein, said chamber affording a seat for the closet bowl connection and surrounding such connection to have communication with the elbow in a plane below the drain pipes from the toilet fixtures.
3. A plumbers fitting as in claim 2, characterized by the chamber ot the elbow having a top wall in a plane above the drain pipe connections with said chamber.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
