l/Vhalley Range, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Finishing' Ifubrics, of which the following` description, together with the accompanying sheet of drawings, is a specification.

In certain parts of the process of treating fabrics in order to Carry out the in'shing or preparing of said fabrics for the market or for use, they are subjected to the actions of devices which apply pressure to them intermittently, such as in apparatus known as a beetling` machine. In varied processes of this character resultsl are obtained which give the fabrics certain lustrous effects, and to enhance these lustrous effects and give a more distinctive appearance to the fabrics thus treated by the application of means or devices of a novel and original character, is the object of my present invention.

In the varied processes in which fabrics are treated by being intermittently subjected to the actions of pressure, said pressure has been applied by falling beetles in a beetling1 machine. In these machines or apparatus the resultant effects are of a dis` tinctive character but are accompanied by defects (such as what are known in the trade as watered or moire effect-s) which are undesirable. f

By means of my 'invention I am able to `give a finish to the fabrics in a uniform degree throughout so that the whole of the surfaces of said fabrics present a better and more desirable appearance.

According .to my invention I produce a roll consisting of alternate layers of fabric and of yielding` material such as rubber, preferably by winding simultaneously onto a roller a length or piece of fabric and a Corresponding length of rubber sheet `or web. Pressure is applied to the multiplicity of alternate layers of fabric and rubber thus produced preferably intermittently by the ordinary beetling process and whilst'the roll is still on the roller.

In order tofbe enabled to more clearly describe my invention I do so by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings which showsthe preferred manner of carrying out my invention, and in which :W

In accordance with my invention I insert a yielding,` substance 7 between the pressing surfaces of the beetles e and between layers with the fabric c so that when the beetles descend the layers f are pressed `upon the fabric .c in a yielding` manner.

The yieldino substance j which I have found to act efliciently is sheet india rubber or an india rubber covered fabric.

I wind the rubber or like substance onto the roller g simultaneously with the fabric c to be treated. When the winding of the compound or duplex coils is completed, rotation of the coil is continued and the beetles a are brought into operation in the ordinary manner for such a period as is found necessary to secure the results aimed at. For a material such as fine cotton taffettaswith roll about eighteen inches diameter with beetles about four inches wide by three inches thick each giving sixty blows per minute, I find excellent results are produced if the beetling is continued for about ten minutes. rIhen the fabric and rubber are wound olf onto another roller so as to reverse the ends in the usual manner after which they are again treated for about ten minutes to finish the process.
