PIPE-SUSPENDING AIPPARATUS.
Application-filed November 22, 1921.
This invention relates to a casingo'r well pipe suspending apparatus. An important object is to PI'OVKlB tL suspending apparatus or holder of thetype mentioned to prevent dropping of apipe intoa wellof oil or water or elsewhere in order to eliminate the labor, timeand expense required in fishing-it out.
Another object isto provide such' an ar tic'le-havinggripping dogs to normally hold thepipe or caslng andprovided with 'means to simultaneously release all of the 1 dogs from the pipe, and to socon'stru'ct the dogs as to resist turning of thepipe incidental to the application or removal of couplings.
A furtherobject is to provide a novel means of the particular "construction and equivalent thereof set forth hereinafter.
IVith the above and additional objects such as will appear in the description following taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, the invention has been embodied in one practical form as illustrated in said drawings. 2
In said drawings 2 Figure 1 is a plan view of the suspending apparatus having a pipe retained therein;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of said apparatus alone;
Figure 3 is a central vertical section through the apparatus showing a pipe gripped thereby, and
Figure 1 is an enlarged perspectlve view of one of the dogs and associated parts to illustrate the pivotal mounting thereof.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughout the views.
In reducing the invention to practice, a suitable base is provided preferably made in one piece which may consist of the rest plate 5, and an upstanding annular wall 6. The base has a central opening as at 8 and the plate 5 at said opening is of less diing relation thereto.
SeriaLNo. 517,0861
ameter than 'the remainder thereof to provide a ledge at 9 which is preferably curved from its upper surfaceto the lower surface to provide a substantially chamfered edge for engagement by a secured pipe, tube or casing as at 10. i V
Openings or slots 11 are provided-radially of'the wall= 6 and operable therein are clutch dogs 12 which are pivoted on -shafts orrods secured in the wall=6 as-at 1-3. Any'suitable number-ofthedogs may be provided according to lndivldual ClBSIIQS OI' requirements.
Anannularband 14: is provided which is disposed abovethe wall 6 and in surround Pivoted to the under surface of the band 1% as at 15are a-plurahtyel' arms 16. The arms "16 enter-the slots llthrough elongated slots 17. The
free ends of said arms 16 enter the slots 18" 111 the lower 'endsof the dogs and fastening pins or pivots 19 pass through the dogs and through said elonga-ted slots 17.
Above the shafts or rods 13-studs or'bolts 20 project one 'from each dog into-the adjacent recess 11 and on saidstuds expansive' coil springs21 are disposed, one end of which abuts the dogs and theother'en d of which abuts the reanend'wall at the slot. The springs 21 normally force the dogs inwardly into gripping relation with the *pipe 10.
Said dogs 12 have cambered surfaces extending into the recesses which are toothed or serrated as at 22 to increase the effectiveness of their grip on the pipe 10, In order to resist turning of the pipe 10 while engaged by the dogs, as during the application or removal of couplings, it is to be noted that the serrations are beveled on different dogs from different sides. In this way some of the dogs resist turning in one direction and the other dogs will resist turning in the opposite direction.
The band 14 is adapted for depression to release the dogs 12. To this end a depressing ring member is provided at 23 above the band 14;. The ring 23 may be made in a single piece and intermediate its ends be bent into a lug 24c, pivoted at 25, to brackets or standards 26 secured to and rising from the wall 6. The free ends or terminals of the band or ring 23 are secured together and projected to form a handle at 27. At diametrically opposite points, pressure shoes whereby the pipe is gripped and will be.
maintained in fastened relation to the ap paratus, thus avoiding any danger of detachment of the pipe and its falling into the well. When it is desired to release the pipe, it is simply necessary to' depress the handle 27 which will retract the dogs and thus release the pipe.
In the eventthat a coupling is applied or removed from the pipe, any tendency of the pipe to turn is resisted and overcome by the serrations at 22.
The beveled or chami'ered ledge 9 prevents the pipe joint from catchingor hanging in, a the apparatus and at the same time acts as a guide in perfectly positioning the pipe relatively to the dogs for effective engagement thereby.
As merely one practical embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes within the spir't and scope as defined by appended claims may be made.
Having thus I claim is 2-- 1. A gripping apparatus of the class described having a plurality of gripping dogs,
described the invention, what means to pivotally mount said dogs, springs urging projection ofsaid dogs, means to retract said dogs counter to the action of said spring, said springs and means having connection with the dogs on opposite sides of their pivots, and depressible means to which said means is connected whereby the dogs will be simultaneously operated.
2. A gripping device of the class described having a dog, means to pivotally mount said dog, a projection extending from the dog, a spring surrounding said projection urging the dog into projected position, an arm connected to said dog on the opposite side of said pivot to said spring, a'pivot pin passing through said dog and arm, and means to actuate said arm. r
3. A gripping apparatus of the class described having a base consisting of a plate, pivotally mounted dogs above said plate, means to urge projection otsaid dogs, arms operable to retract said dogs, a depressible member, said arms being pivoted to said depressible. member, a lever movable against said member, and means rising from said plate to pivotally mount said lever.
4. A gripping apparatus or the class described having a base provided with an opening to receive an article to be gripped, said base having a plate, said base having slots, dogs movable in said slots, rods pivotally mounting said dogs, springs engaging said dogs and walls of the slots to normally project the dogs, arms extending into said slots, pins pivotally connecting the arms to said dogs, a band, said arms being pivoted to said band, a lever, means rising from said plate pivotally mounting said lever, a pressure shoe engageable with said band, and
means pivoting said shoe on said lever. In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
