Description
UNITED STATES HORACE S. BREEDEN,
PATENT OFFICE.
or BARRY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,251, dated November 4, 1873 5 application filed October 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, HORACE S. BREEDEN, of Barry, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a side view of my improved spring-scissors.
The object of my invention is to furnish, for the use of dry-goods salesmen, sewingmachine workers, and the public in general, convenient scissors, which may be applied either as clippers or scissors, as desired, allowing the handling of the goods or work without laying down the scissors, and saving thereby considerable time in their use. My invention consists of springscissors, Vof which one shank is curved, having no ring, the other provided with two rings, both being also connected by a pivoted spring latch or lock, which holds the blades together when it is desired to throw them out of use during the handling of the goods.
In` the drawing, Arcpresents the lower seis sors-blade, with curved upper shank, a', which rests, in closed position of the scissors, on the second ring, b', of the lower shank, a. The upper blade, B, is provided with two rings, b b', of which the one nearest to the shank a of the blade is of larger size than the outer ring, b. A bandspring d, is applied to ring I), bent over to acton shank a of blade A, and guided thereon, in the usual manner, by a groove, c, at the lower part of the same. The spring d keeps the blades open, and is so adjusted as to keep the blades in close contact, so that the pressure by the thumb produces the same cutting facilities as with ordinary scissors. A pivoted spring catch or lock, f, is applied to shank a., and slides in a recess, f1, of shank a when the scissors are used, which recess is of sufficient size to allow the proper play of the scissors. A slotted side extension, f2, of recess" f1 serves to lock the turned-down end of catch f therein, and to close thereby the blades, which is very useful, as hurting or injuring of the ngers is avoided, and the scissors also more conveniently handled.
`The scissors are used as clippers by placing the rings on the third and little fingers Of the hand, applying thumb and forefingers to the blades to clip the selvage of cloth, or the thread in machine sewing.
Then used as ordinary scissors, the rings are tted on the second and third fingers, and Operated by the pressure Of the thumb On the upper shank.
rlhe main advantage of these scissors, whcthcr they are used for either purpose, is that the hand is free to handle or measure goods, tie bundles, use pencil, or guide work On the sewing-machine, etc., retaining at the same time the scissors in such a position in the hand that they may be used at any moment for the different purposes desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patentl. As a new article of manufacture, the combined scissors and clippers, having a shank with two rings, and a spring acting on the other curved shank, to be used and Operated sub- .stantially as described.
2. The curved shank of the scissors having a pivoted spring-catch, in combination with the ring-shank, having a recess with slotted extension for locking the blades into closed position, for the purpose set forth.
HORACE S. BREEDEN.
