FREDRICK JAMES WILLIAMS, OE BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
REFILLABLE IFUSE.`
Application filed February 15, 1921. Serial No. 445,274.
To all whom t may cof/cern Be itknown that' I, FREnRIcn Jsiuns lYiLmAMs, of the city ofBul'alo, in the county of Erie, State of New York, United States of America, a citizen ofthe United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refillable Fuses, of which the following is -a specifi- `cation.
This invention relates to improvements in electric cartridge fusesinwhich the fusible element, when blown out, is adapted to be replaced, and my object is to devisea con'- struction which will be very simple and cheap to manufacture, which will have a mininnnn number of loose parts, and in which the fusible element may be replaced in the least possible time without the aid of tools of any kind.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,-
Fig. 1 is a view of one form of the device with one half of the casing removed, the end caps being shown in section.;
Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the device;
F ig. 3 an end elevation of the same; and
Fig. 4 a side eleva-tion, partly in section and partly broken away, showing another form of my construction.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The casing of the device comprises two half sections 1 and 2 of a suitable insulating material. In the construction in Fig. 1, I secure to each end of the vsection 1 a contact member 3 by means of screws 4, while to each end of the section 2 I secure a contact member 5 by means of screws 6. The members 3 preferably are extended to form contact blades. In each contact member 5 is formed an opening 15 preferably rectangular in shape, while on each contact member 3 is formed a projection 7 adapted to be received by the recess 15. The ends of the member 2 will also be provided with a recess behind each opening 15.
It will be understood, of course, that while the projections are shown and described as being formed on the contact members 3, the
projections might be formed on the membersk 5 and the contact members 3 and the section 1 provided with the openings or recesses, and
the construction be equall)Y as satisfactory, or. if desired I may, as shown in Fig. 4. dispense entirely with the contact members 5 and form the :recesses or projections directly on' the section 2.
8 `is the fusible member having the usual weakenedI portion towards its centre. lach end of the fusible member 8 is provided with a lrectangular opening adapted for the passage of the projections 7.
In' order to properly position the fusible member relative to the members3, the inner ends of the members 3 are formed with guides 9 adapted to engage in notches l() formed in the sides of the fusible member.
The halves of the casing are secured to- 0'ether by means of the metal end caps 11.. zThese end caps 11 are provided with separated flanges 12 forming in eli'ect notches 13 between the flanges. These flanges are of greatest width at their center and gra-dually narrow down towards each end. The caps are placed in position on the end of the casing over the terminal blades, and then rotated thereon, the blades being provided with notches 14 to receive the flanges 12. It will thus be seen that the more the caps are rotated on the casing, the tighter the engagement of the caps with the terminal blades 3.
The fuse, it will be noted, comprises only five separable parts viz, the two halves of the casing, the fusible member and the two end caps. Further, it will be noted that there are no bolts, screws, or other parts requiring tools to loosen in order to remove a blown out fusible member and insert a new one.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a construction which will satisfactorily attain the objects of my invention as set out in the preamble of this specification.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a refillable fuse, the combination of a divided casing; a contact member secured to each end of each part of the casing; a projection formed on one contact member at each end, the other Contact member at each end having an opening formed therein to receive said projection; a fusible member having an opening at each end adapted for the passage of said projections; and removable caps adapted to hold the parts of the casing in engagement with one another.
2. In a refillable fuse, the combination of o riivie'ieei ng; i commit member secured et', each end ofefich pei-1; oi the casing; e projection formed onv one of seid Contact members 5c each erich he other Contact nieinbei" each end being provided with en openin@` ada-pred *no receive seid projections; e usihie nieinher having an opening; 'at each emi 'for the priserige f id proieetiene; and removable clips enseign; one of seid con- 'zict members :it o@ich en@L anni adapted to hold "che parts oil he casing; in engagement with one enoher.
3. in :i reiiilahie fuse, 'the combination of u longitudinally divided casing; a conieet nieniher seenrefiV er each end io seid feeling and having notches formed therein; a, fasihie member contacinni with the conzict ineinbers; carpe enclosing the ends of the cosing; and flanges Yioi'ined. on said. caps adepted to engage .in Seid notches io retain the caps in position on Jche casingj seid flanges being oi Varied Wiciih and. having o, ca1nlike engagement with zhe Contacty members 4L. in a, ieiilieble fuse, 'the combination oi:
nie-Leise :1, fiiificied casing; eontect nieinber 'secure-Ci at each end to seid casing; e projection 'formed dit each of the `fuse; a. fusible member havin an opening at eaeh end for she passage oi Said. projections; and having notcheQ 'formed in its edges; guides :formed on the inner ends of seid Contact members engaging ie said noehee; :ind removable #caps adapted io secure the pars oi jL-he cesing; in engegeinenz wiih one another.
f En reilehe inse? the combination oi` e divided. easing; e Contact member et each end secured Lo one pant oci? said casing; each of Seid Contact nieinhers having; a` projection therefrom, Jche other part o the casing hat# ing e recesy et each end for receiving seifi projections; e fnsihle element having' opening each end through Which seid projections pass; and reinoveiiile caps enclosing the ends of the casing.
