To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ED UND R. BARANY and WILLIAM S. Piu'rcHAnn, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, and Mount Vernon, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Flash Lights, of which the following is acspec ification.
This invention relates to flashlights of that particular type wherein the primary reflector is employed in combination with an auxiliary or return reflector, the return reflector being disposed torwardly with respect to the primary reflector and functioning co-operatively therewith to produce a highly intensified reflected beam.
An important object of the invention is to provide a method by which an auxiliary or return reflector maybe cheaply provided and combined with the several elements of the flashlight to produce the desired intensifled illumination common'to flashlights of the above mentioned character.
A further object of the invention is to so improve the construction of the co-operative reflectors and the various elements entering into the combination therewith as to make possible the provision of a neat,compact, strong and durable flashlight unit belonging to that class of devicesto which our invention is directed.

Tn the drawings, attention being, called to Figuresl and 2, a flashlight constructed in accordance with our invention and employing in connection therewith a speciflc form oflens is-shown. The numeral 10 indicates a container having at one end thereof a lamp support in the form of a screw threaded cap 11, the end 12 of which is centrally depressed to provide a-lens receiving seatil3 terminating in a ledge or flange 14:, and provided with a central socket receiving opening 15. Within the opening 15 there is arranged a lamp socket'lfl having a head 1'? and an elongated reducing portion 18, the diameter of which is somewhat shorter than the diameter of the opening 15. The lamp socket 16 is centrally disposed within the opening 15, in order that the same may be spaced an appreciable distance from the ledge 14L toprevent electrical communication between the socket and the screw cap 11 which are further insulated fromeach other by means of an insulating washer -19 arranged intermediate the socket head 17 and the ledge 14 upon which the washer is seated. lit will be noted that the lamp socket 16 is projected an appreciable distance through the opening 15' and that the same carriesatv its inner end a contact plate 20,
which is maintained in a spaced relation with respect to the ledge 1 1 and insulated, therefrom by means of an insulating washer 21, similar to the washer 19 hereinbefore mentioned. The'socket 16, the contact plate 20 and the insulating washers 19 and 21 are retained in their respective positions by reason of the fact that the inner end of the elongated reducedportion 18 of the lamp socket 16 is upset to provide a flange or bead 22 which is maintained in electrical connection with the socket by reason of its direct engagement therewith. k
The screw threaded cap 11 is adapted for the reception of a removable head 23, which comprises a relatively long screw threaded sleeve 24, adapted for screw threaded engagement with the cap 11, the sleeve 24 at its outer end being provided with an angularly disposed flange 25 which, prior to assembly, is substantially of the shape shown in. cross-section in Figure 2, it being so formed for a purpose which will hereinafter more clearly appear. The flange '25 is adapted to receive thereupon a concave re-- flector 26, which is provided centrally with a relatively large opening 27, which permits the removal of the sleeve 24 together with the reflector 26 secured thereto without dis- I turbing or necessitating the removal of the electric lamp 28 carried by the lamp. socket- 16. The reflector 26 is, at its outer end, provided with a circumferential shoulder 29 which serves as an abutment against which the outer edge of the flange 25 rests when. the reflector 26 is seated thereon. It will be noted that the reflector 26 is formed integral with a lens supporting flange 30 I which projects an appreciable distance beas shown in Figure 1. In constructing a flashlight in accordance with our invention we propose to silver that portion of the lens 31 over which the elongated extension 32 is disposed in order that an auxiliary or return reflector may be provided. In Figure 2, the
lens 31 is shown as coated with a silver coating 33, to which is subsequently applied a coating of shellac or other suitable protective material 34. In carrying out the in- I vention, however, it may be found desirable in some instances to provide the inner surface of the elongated extension 32 with a mirror like or reflectory surface as shownat 33', before the same is spun down into intimate contact with the outer surface of the lens. By providing such a surface upon the elongated extension 32 rather than upon the exterior surface of the lens it is obvious that when the elongated extension 32 is run down into intimate engagement with the lens the function of the same will be identical with that of a reflector provided upon the outer surface of the lens.
In assembling the reflector 26 the same is so positioned that theend of the flange 25 contacts with the reflector relatively near the shoulder 29 and by forcing the reflector 26 a suflicient distance inwardly with respect to the screw threaded sleeve 24, the flange 25 is thereby caused to assume the shape shown in Figure 1 whereby an intimate cont-act of the same is maintained with the reflector 26. After having forced the reflector 26 inwardly upon the flange 25 to the position shown in Figure 1, the same is suitably secured to the sleeve 24 as by means of soldering or welding. We have disclosed as a source of electrical supply, a battery 35 of the usual or conventional type having a carbon electrode 36 maintained in contact with posite poles of the battery 35 through the lamps 28, the lamp socket 16, the contact plate 20, and a suitable conductor 37 electrically connected to the contact plate 20 by means of a contact arm 38 having engagement therewith.
In Figure 3 we have shown a slightly modified form of lens 39, and in Figure 4.- we have shown still another modified form of lens 40. These lenses are adapted to be retained in position upon the lens receiving flange 30 by means of the elongated extension 32 hereinbefore mentioned, and may be silvered as above described in connection with lens 31 to produce an auxiliary or return reflector, or, if desired, instead of coating a portion of the outer surface of these lenses, the elongated extension 32 which serves to retain them in their respective positions may be provided with the reflectory surface 33 for the purpose hereinbeforc mentioned.
We claim:
1. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector, a lens, and an auxiliary reflector surrounding the peripheral surface of said lens, and means overlying said reflector for retaining said lens and auxiliary reflector in proper position with respect to said primary reflector.
2. A..fiashlight comprising a concave primary reflector, a lens associated with said reflector, said lens having a curved peripheral surface, anrauxiliary reflector surrounding the curved peripheral surface of said lens, andmeans overlying said reflector surface for retaining said lens in position.
3. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector having a lens supporting flange, a lens seated upon said flange, and an auxiliary reflector surrounding said lens.
4. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector having a lens supporting flange, a lens seatedupon said flange, means for re taining saidlens seated upon said flange, and an auxiliary reflector surrounding said lens.
5. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector, a lens supporting flange, a lens seated upon said flange, means associated with said flange for retaining said lens seated upon said flange, and a reflectory medium disposed intermediate said lens and said lens retaining means.
6. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector, a lens associated with said reflector, said lens being provided with an annular reflectory surface completely encircling the central portion of said lens and adapted to function as an auxiliary reflector.
7. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector, a lens having a eui'ved peripheral area, said curved peripheral area being )rovided with a reflectory surface adapte t function as an auxiliary reflector.
8. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector having a lens supporting flange, a lens seated upon said flange, said lens being provided with an annular reflectory surface eaeas adapted to function as an auxiliary reflector, and means associated with said flange for retaining said lens in position and protecting the reflectory surface thereof.
9. A flashlight comprising a primary reflector having a lens supporting flange, said flange terminating in an extension, a lens seated upon said flange, said lens being provided with a curved reflectory surface over which said extension is adapted to be bent to retain said lens in position upon said flange.
10. A flashlight comprising a lamp support having a centrally depressed reflector seat, a socket carried by said support but insulated therefrom, a lamp carried by said socket, a detachable reflector seated upon said reflector seat, said reflector being provided with an opening sufliciently large to permit the removal of the reflector without disturbing the position of said lamp.
11. A flashlight comprising a lamp support having a centrally depressed reflector seat, a lamp carried by said support, a detachable sleeve associated with said support, said sleeve terminating in a reflector receiving flange, a reflector seated upon said flange and said reflector seat, said reflector being provided With an opening suflioiently large through which said lamp projects to permit the removal of said reflector together with said sleeve without disturbing the position of said lamp.
12. The method of constructing a flashlight employing a lens, an auxiliary reflecting surface", and a primary reflector having a flange forming extension which consists in placing the lens in such a position that the flange forming extension projects beyond the periphery of said lens, and forcing the flange forming extension of said primary reflector over the margin of said lens to produce a flange and to enclose the auxiliary reflecting surface intermediate the lens and the flange thus formed.
13. The method of construction a flashlight employing a primary reflector and a lens which consists in providing said lens with a reflectory surface, placing the lens in such a position that the reflector projects beyond the periphery of said lens, and forcing the end of said reflector over the peripheral margin of said lens.
14. The method of constructing a flashlight employing a primary reflector and a lens which consists in applying a reflectory material to the peripheral margin of said lens, placing said lens in such a position that the end of the reflector projects beyond the peripheral edge of the lens, and forc ingthe projecting portion of said reflector into an overlying position about the coated peripheral margin of said lens.
