iMPRovEMENT IN ELEvAToRs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.144,161,datcd October 28,1873; application filed September 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JEROME B. SWEETLAND, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Elevating Brick and Mortar, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the constructionV a-nd arrangement of a hoisting apparatus for elevating brick and mortar, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to `describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my hoisting apparatus.
A represents a beam of any suitable dimensions, to be placed in a horizontal position ten to fifteen feet above the upper joists of the building by bolting or spiking suitable legs or supports to it, thus forming a regular trestle. B B represent two sets of vertical guides, made of rope, wire, wire-cable, or other suitable flexible material, fastened at their upper ends to the beam A in any desired manner 5 and their lower ends may be attached directly to the bed O of the windlass, or they may be attached to levers D D, which are pivoted to the bed and fastened and held by means of ratchet-bars a a. I prefer this latter mode, as by that means the guide may be drawn perfectly tight. Upon each sct of guides B B runs a car or carriage, E, up and down, said car being on its sides provided with hollow sleeves b b, through which the wire guides B B pass. rlhe cars or carriages E E are designed to carry either hods or wheelbarrows. In the upper beam or section of each car is one or more notches, d., for the purpose of hanging hods on. In a fullsized machine the cars may be made wide enough to receive from one to four or six hods. To either or both of the carriages E is attached a wheelbarrow attachment, consisting of two hooked arms, G G, connected by 011e or more rounds, e, and pivoted or hinged on a round in the carriage. The wheelbarrow is run in between. the two hooked. arms G G, and when said arms rise by the upward movement of the carriage they pick the barrow up, taking hold of it just outside ofthe handles and right under the box. On the bed O is a windlass, consisting of a drum, H, having its bearings in suitable standards, and its shaft at one end, outside of said standard, provided with a cogwheel, I, into which gears a smaller wheel, J, upon a shaft, K, having also its bearings in the standards mentioned. One end of the shaft K is provided with a crank, L, by means of which the windlass is turned. On the shaft K, on the inner side of the cog-wheel J, is a small cog or ratchet-wheel,f, and two pawls, 7L h, are pivot-ed on the frame-work to engage with said wheel from either side. These pawls are, by links t' t', connected with a T-shaped lever, P, pivoted to the frame-work. By turning this lever to either side one pawl is disengaged from and the other engaged with the ratchet-wheel, so that the windlass may be turned in either direction, as desired.. Around the drum H of the windlass is passed a rope, m, the ends of which pass upward on opposite sides of the drum, a-nd over pulleys n n in the beam A to the carriages E E, to which they are attached. Thus, while one car or carriage is being hoisted the other is lowered.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the beam A and windlass-bed O, of the guides B B, levers D I), and ratchet-bars a a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The hooked arms G G, constructed as shown, and hinged or pivoted to the carriage E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. rlhe combination of the beam A with pulleys n a, guides lB B, carriages E E, rope m, and the windlass, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
