WALTER F. KNOX, O1? BIDDEFORD, IWIAINE.
DRAWI NG AND MEASURING DEVICE.
Application filed January 8, 1920, Serial No. 350,155. Renewed November 20, 1922.,
To (ZZZ "whom it may concern Be it known that I, VALTER F. KNOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biddeford, in the county ofYork and State of 5 Maine, have invented new and useful limprovements in Drawing and Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in d *awing and measuring devices, and has for its object the provision of a simple and in expensive device for making drawings to scale when ordinary drafting appliances are not available, as when preparing sketches in the field.
With the above stated object in view, the invention comprises the new and useful details of construction and arrangement, which will be fully described herein, illus- J trated in the annexeddrawing, and claimed more specifically hereinafter.
In the drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown, the figure is a top plan view of the improved drawing and measuring device.
The device comprises atorty-five degree triangle 1 and a straight edge the latter being placed on the drawing paper and. fastened down thereon. by thumb tacks or other suitable means passed through per ii'orations 7 near the ends of the straight edge. The straight edge 3 will be positioned dia-goi'nilly on the drawing paper at such an angle that when the triangle 1 isplaced in edgewisc contact therewith as shown in full lines in the drawing, the hypothenuse edge 2 of the triangle may be used for .,uiding the pencil or drawing instrument to draw horizontal lines. If the sheet "of drawing paper is rectangular and it is desired to have the horizontal lines of the drawing parallel to the top and bottom edges oi the sheet, the straight edge 3 must be placed at an angle of forty-five degrees to said edges.
, 5 lilowever. this is not necessary and the outline of the sheet may be disregarded, the straight edge 3 being placed. at any couvenlent angle and used to guide the trlangle 1 in the manner stated'to draw lines running across the sheet in the direction of the sides thereof, these to be the horizontal lines of the drawing. Vertical lines are drawn by turning over the triangle 1 shown dotted in the drawing, the hypothplacing it as enuse edge 2 now running in the direction of the top and bottom edges of the sheet, so that when the pencil or drawing instrument is guided along said edge it will make lines which are perpendicular to the horizontal lines which were drawn when the triangle was in thefirst described position.
In either one of the two hereinbei ore described positions of the triangle, one of its edges & adj acent to the hypothenuse edge 2 is placed n, contact with the ed e of the memher 3, as'elearly shown in the drawing, and by sliding the triangle along the latter edge, parallel lines may be drawn, the hypothenuse edge 2 of the triangle 1 having a graduated scale so that the required length of these lines may be readily obtained.
In order that the distance between the parallel lines may be accurately measured, the edge of the member 3 which guides the triangle 1 base graduated scale 5. To enable readings to be taken directly from this scale, its graduations denote actual distances hctween'parallel lines drawn along the hypothenuse edge 2, but as the member 8 extends obliquely or diagonally with respect to these parallel lines the distances between the graduations are greater than the actual distance. denoted thereby, the difference being proportionate to the angle oi. the member 3 relative to thepainllel lines drawn along the edge 2.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the present invention provides a simple and inexpensive device for making drawings to scale, especially adapted for use in the field where ordinary appliances are not available.
I claim:
A. drawing device comprising a straight ed and a fortydivo degree triangle, the
eight edge being adapted to be positioned diagonally, on the drawing surface, and the triangle adapteifl to be positioned with one oi its edges which is adjacent to its hypotlu enuse edge in sliding contact with the straight edge, to position said hypothenuse edge horizontally or vertically on the draw ing surface, the straight edge having graduations denoting actual distances between parallel lines drawn along the hypothenuse edge. 1
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WALTER F. KNOX.
