CHARLES MARIUS MOTTE, 0F PARIS, FRANCE.
PROPELLER FOR VESSELS.
Application led March 22, 1921. Serial No. 454,569.
To /z/Z 'ic/rom l? may concern y Be it known that I. @nannies Mairies MOTTE, a citizen of the French Republic, re siding at Paris, France, haveinvented new and uset'ul Improvements in Propellers for Vessels. of which the following is a specification.
in the specification accompanying my c opending application led on April l2. 1920, Serial No. 378,361 Jfor propellers for vessels, which has matured into Patent No. 1.408.765. a suspended turbine is described which carries the turbine wheel in a completely surroundingl casing having top and bottom admission and lateral eduction.
The object of my present modification is to provide a vertically displaceable suspei'ided turbine for use in. pinnaces or chalanas and like flat-bottonn-:d vessels that have to naviejate in shallow waters, and I attain this olnect by the arrangement hereinafter described with reference to the annexed drawings, in which:
Figures l and :2 are vertical sections showing the lowered and raised position ot the turbine F 3 a corresponding plan;
Fig. l a rear elevation of a complete installation; y
Fig. 5 a vertical section drawn to a larger scale, oit the turbine;
Figs. 6, 'T and 8 are diagrams, drawn in plan, showing various positions of the eduction port of the turnable turbine casing.
The turbine wheel a revolves in the casing having admissions 1, o2 and a lateral eduction (I. A perforated hood Z keeps the turbine free troni sludge and objectionable mattei'. c denotes the turbine shaftv and c the sleeve carrying and turning the casing A. stationary housing or well j covering the turbine. is fixed in the pinnace` in watertight manner and communication channels m and n lead `from the housing through oorresponding ports in the sides ot the pinnace or chalana. A power shaft u rotates a pinion fr which gears with a wheel s keyed to the turbine shailt c. closed in a box f/ adjustably held by a screwspindle y; controlled by a handwheel 0, the whole being mounted in a standard r. To turn thc turbine casing in steering the boat` l provide mitre wheels n trom one ot which a, Spindle y1o descends along-side thc bong.
This mechanism is en-` T'he spindle 'w has gear-teeth to be in constent mesh with a pinion 7]/ which turns the wheel ,e tast on the sleeve e connected with the casing Z), which latter can be turned angular-ly and also lifted and lowered. To permit of lifting and lowering the mechanism without disconnecting same trom the motor. the driving shaft can consist of two parts having` universal joints to enable them to be coupled to a train of gear wheels, actuated bythe motor, and to the pinions t in gear with the wheels s.
Then the pinnace, or chalana, is empty and the water duct ou is above the water level it will be necessary rto lower the turbine with its hood Z belowthe flat bottom of the boat as shown in Figs. l and et so that now the water is admitted to the turbine through the perforated sides Z oi the hood.
W' ith loaded pinnace, the turbine is broiiight up as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, when m becomes the admission and n the eduction.
I claimh A. turbine apparatus, 'for propelling and steering a vessel having a well `for the turbine provided with inlet and discharge openings, comprising a turbine wheel; a vertical lshaft at the bottom ot' which the wheel is secured; a casing for the wheel having inlet and discharge openings adapted to communicate with the openings in the well; a per-y forated hood carried by the casing; a sleeve surrounding the shai't secured to the casing; gear means `for driving the shaft at the upper end thereof; a housingr for the driving means adapted to rotatably support the up- ;per end of the sleeve; a standard fixed on the well; a screw spindle secured to the gear housing and extending through the standardpa screw threaded hand wheel seated on the stain'lard and engaging the screw spindle to adjust the turbine vertically within the well. and meanstor rotating the sleeve and turbinecasing to vary ,the angular relation oi the discharge openingI therein comprising a. system of gears, one ot said gears being elongated and mounted on. said well and standard and the kothers ot said gears being carried by the gear housing and sleeve whereby rotation of the sleeve and tiiirb-ine casina is permitted at any vert-ical position thereof.
, errantes .minnie i/io'rrn.
