`While my invention is particularly applicable to duplex and triplex .deep well pumps, and while it has a special utility and noveltywhen so applied, nevertheless l. do not Wish to be understood as restricting myself to` such an application of my invention which should be limited only by i the annexed claims.
An object of my invention is to provide a piston of this character which will have a very large opening therethrough, ythuscutting down the water. frictions through the buckets and valves and increasing the efficiency.` f
A further object of my invention is to provide a valve for use in such a piston which will have a single closing surface and which will be flexibly guided so that it makes a tight closure with that surface at all times.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a valve having a packed central openin and kto provide means for preventing un ue wear on the vpacking about said central opening.

In the Vform of the yinvention illustrated a -single lbucket is shown, this bucket operating inside the pump barrelll and consist-` ing of abody 12 carried by three arms 13 from aL -hub 14. y krlhe body carries cup leathers 15 which are heldin placel by spacers y' 16,: members 15 and 16 being clamped solidly by a nut 17. The hub 14 is threaded at 1S to receive thelower end of apump rod 20, tris pump rod consisting of a hollow tube'which extends upwardly to the top of the well and is' operatedbya pump head,.not shown. lPassing through a central opening 21 ,in the hub 18 is a second l 22 which may, be a hollow pipe or a solid rod as shown. This pump rod 22 extends downwardly inside the pump barrel 11 and is connected to the-next lower bucket of the pump which is not shown. The pump rods 20 and 22 are so reciprocated that one of them is moving kupwardly at certain times when the other is moving downwardly, this being necessary to provide a continuous flow of water, one of the buckets lifting when the other bucket is falling. The bucket 11 is provided with a central passage 25 which terminates at its top in a valve seat 26. The valve seat 26 is preferably conical or spherical in contour and it is closed by a vvalve 30 which has a Surface 31 machined. to vfit accurately" against the seat 26.
