IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,122 dated October 28, 1873; application filed June 7, 1873.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL MURSET and EMIL ZUBERBUHLER, both of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Fire-Escape Ap' paratus, of which the following is a specifica tion The object of our invention is to permit a person escaping from a burning building by a suspended rope to easily regulate the speed of his descent; and this object we attain bymeans of a block, A, represented in perspective and in section Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, having a spiral groove for receiving a rope, B, and so fitted into a box, D, that itcan be readily withdrawn therefrom. The ropepasses through the top of the box, round the spiral groove in the block, and through the bottom of the box, which is furnished with a lid having projections 0 6, adapted to spring-catches f f on the top, the lid beingTeleased, as shown in Fig. 1, when the spring-catches are moved toward each other. This lid is also furnished with projections h and t, which, fitting recesses in the bottom and top of the box, restrict these recesses to a size sufficient to permit the rope to pass freely. This allows of the ready connection of the box to and its'disconnection from the rope. hen it has to be detached, for instance, all that is necessary is to open the lid of the box, withdraw the block A from its bearings in the opposite ends of the box, and uucoil the rope from the block which can be reintroduced into the box at pleasure."
I claim The combination, substantially as described, of the detachable grooved block A with the box D and its lid E.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL MUBSET.
EMIL ZUBERBUHLER.
