DIE.
application ined June i, m21. semaine. 474,975.
To all whom/t mag/concern." Be it known that l, 'li-roiuiisl-loors, a citizen of the United States, residing 4at Middletown, in the county of ldiddlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements vin Dies, of which the following is a specification, reference` being had therein tothe accompanying drawings n n My invention A`relates'to new and useful improvements in dies andhas for its object, among` other things, to provide a die that will support ablanlr thereon during an eX-4 panding operation thereon,` aortions of the die traveling with the expanding portions of theblanlr through the action of the eX- panding tool. I i f To these and other. ends, my invention consists in the die, having certain ydetails of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter ydescribed and more particularlypointed zoutinthe claims.v Referring to the drawings, in whichlike numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; f Figure l is a fragmentary plan yview of my improved die; f
Figure 2 is a similarelevation thereof; Figurev 3 is a view of a blankl ready for operation by the expanding-tools; andy p Figure t is a view of the same blank after it has been subjectedto the expanding operation.
My improved n for use in supporting a blank while portions thereof are being expanded or spread into a weldless yorsolid eye, although not necessarily limited thereto.
The blank as presented tothe die and produced by a preceding operation, is shown in '.l'igure 3, and after being subjected to the operation ggierformed 'by thek tools in connection with the die herein shown. is illustrated in Figure 4;.
In the expanding or spreading` operation it is essential that the moving portions of the blank be supported while the expanding tool is operating thereon and at' the saine time not interfere with the operation of the expanding tool, aresult obtained in my improved die.
In the drawings, the reference numeral designates the base of the die havinga lug 11 project-ing from each side thereof with an opening or holel 12 therethrough that provides a convenient means for fastdie` is especially designed' ening the die to a press or similar machine. ln the top ofthe base is a recess 14, the bottom` ofy which l preferably,` but not necessarily, cover with a wearing plate of hardened material.k An opening 13 extends through said plate 715and `that portion of the,.base immediately adjoining.
l `Slidably vmounted within said recess 14tarethe slidesormoving platforms 16 which f are yheld thereinby the caps 17 secured to the base 10 by thebolts 18 or similar means.
yA stop member 19 is adjustably secured to the base by a screw 2O or by similar means andr is designed to determine the relative position of the blank thereon.
n The springs 22, which are supported at one end within the recesses 23 in the slides 16 and at the other end in the recesses 24 in the base 10, lexert their tension so as to always maintain the slides in aI position wherein their inner faces .abut against each other, as shown in Figure 2, this tension being varied by means of the screw plugs 25 threaded into the outer end of the ref cessesi 24.
Extending across the recess 14, and let into the slides'or `platform, 16, So that the upper surfaces thereof and of Vsaid slides or platforms are Hush' with each` other, are the plates 28, which support the opposite ends of the blanks during the movement of saidslides or platforms. i 1
Inj operation, a blank 29,y suchy as shown in Figure v3, is placed upon top of the slides or; platforms 16 with one end of the blank againstthe stop\19,.at which time the eX- panding ytool 21 is opposite the recess 26 iny the upper side lof the blank. Movement of the tool21 causes the same to enter said recess and thaty portion of the blanlr upon either side of the rece'ssyis moved or spread out liardly. Such moving portions travel. upon the top of the slides or platforms 16 until the point of the tool 21 enters the recess 27 formed in the upper meeting edges of the saidslides.` rllhereafter, during the movement of the expanding tool 21, the slides are `forced apart against the resistance of the springs`22 and supportthe expanding or moving portions of the blank upon the top thereof during this movement. During the return movement of the eX- panding tool 21 the slides 16 move inwardly toward each other throughy the action of the springs 22 until their inner faces are in contact;
I would therefore have it understood that I kdo not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,- l. In combination witlra tool, a die comprising a base, slides or platforms movably mounted'thereon, and means for moving said slides toward'each other, said slides or platforms being actuated in one dir ction by the action of'said tool.
2. Ina die, the combination with a base member, having a recess in one face thereof; of slides or platforms movably mounted therein; means for holding said slides within said recesses; and yielding means formoving` said slides within said recesses toward each other.
3. In combination with the base; of a tool, and means connected with said base and actuated in one direction vby said tool for supportinga blank during lateral movement thereof inrelation to saidtool.
4. In combination with a tool; of a base; and yielding means connected with the base for supporting` a blank during the movement of said tool, portions of 4which are being spread apart relativelyby said tool.
5. In combination with a tool; of a die mechanism of the character described comprising a plurality of slides or platforms yieldingly mounted therein, the inner faces of which are shaped to form a recess'in the top surf-ace thereof, which slides or platforms are moved away from each other by engagement of said tool which first enters the said recess.
infr-neas G. In a die, the combination with a base .'meinber; of a plurality of slides or platforms movably mounted therein, said slides or platforms having a recess formed therebetween in one face thereof; and yielding means for moving said slides or platforms towardeach other.
7. lIn a die, the combination with 4a base member; of a plurality of slides or platforms movably mounted therein, said slides or platforms having a recess formed therebetween in one face thereof; yielding means for moving said slides or platforms toward each other; and means for adjusting the tension of said yielding means.
S, In a die, the combination with a vbase member; of a plurality of slides or platforms movably mounted therein, said slides vor platforms having a recess formed therebetween in one face thereof; yielding means for moving said slides or platforms toward each other; and means connected with said die for locating t -e blank to be operated upon relatively to said slides.`
9. In combination with a tool, a die mechanism having a base, slides or platforms movably mounted thereon, means for moving said slides toward each other, said slides or platforms being actuated ink one direction by the action of said tool; andmeans for supporting a portion of a blank, being operated upon, upon non-movable portions of the die.
l0. In combination with a tool, al die for operating upon a blank wherein a portion thereof remains stationary and another portion is moved laterally in relation to the said tool, and com prising a base member, a plurality of slides or platforms movably mounted therein tosupport the'moving'portion of said blank, and stationary meansadjacent to said slides or platforms for determining'the position of said blank.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
