i 10 all whom t 'may concern Be it lrnown that l, GwiLYM Sriiiw, a` citizen of the United States, and resident of Akron, Oli-io, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Bathing Hats `or Caps, of which the followingis a specification.
'My present invention relates to improve ments in hats or caps of the bathing cap*` type of sheet rubber and aims to provide a brimmed hat which may be reversed or worn f in different wavs to present different appearances and also accomplish different results.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention includes the novel bathing cap as hereinafter described, my said invention being defined by the claims appendedk of the hat reversed i in the condition of Fig. 1 but with the flap turned in.
Referring by reference characters to thisr drawing, my improved hat or cap is shown as comprising a crown portion and a brim portion, the crown in turn comprising an upper portion 1, which l preferablyform of sheet rubber or similar flexible water proof material, and a lower annular or ring shaped portion 1b. rlhe upper andy lower portions are preferably formed byv cutting or dieing them from flat sheets and are `ioined together at the cuter edge by the action of the die, which has a blunt cuttingy edge, so as to press the severededges together to form these pressed together edges being homon geneously united, by the pressing action of the die, into a hermetic flush sea-m.
The brim of the hat or cap is formed from two superposed ring shaped sheets 2 and 2b of material joined together at its i-nner and outer edges, preferably by the cutting action of blunt annular cutting dies as above described, the inner edge ofthe brim sheets being united to the lower edge of the crown portion lb rby a seam or joint a reversible seam or `ioint 1,
indicatedy at QQwhich isv also a hermetic Hush seam."
An annular or ring shaped band 3 has its outer edge joined to the seam or joint 2 by a hermetic seam or oint, the remaining portion of the `band being free and forming Aan annular flap.
kThe hat may therefore be wornwith the flap turned inin `the position of a sweat band, giving the hat the appearance shown in Figp', or with .the flap depending as shown in Fig. 1, enabling it to be ldrawn down over the ears to exclude water therefrom.`v f
lreferably, the band is formed of crimped material as shown.y
By reason of the fact that the seams present the same appearance on opposite sides the hat may be worn reversed orturned inside out. made of contrasting colors, so that when worn inside out, a different appearance isk presented.' f
For example, the crownlportion 1a. may be made of one color, portion 1b of another color, and band or flap 3 of the same `color as portion 1a or a still different color. As
tion'lb, when the yhat is turned inside out from the position shown in Figs, 1 andy 3, the band encircles the lowery part of crown portion 1b and forms a contrasting band producing a materially different appearance, as shown in Fig. 2.
The two sheets of which `the brim is composed are also preferably formed of different colors, As an example kof coloring, I may form the crown portion 1a of red material, crown portion 1b of white, flap or band 3 of red, brim layer 2a of white and brim layer 2b of red, thus producing the contrasts in the different positions' of the haty parts as shown in the drawings.
lt is desirable to provide means for stiffening the brim without interfering withthe elasticity of the body of the hat to interfere with its being drawn over different sized headsE f To yaccomplish this, l use a resilient ring 4L of rust proof metal. This is kpreferably made-in the shape of a split ring which is inserted through an opening in one of the brim layers and theendsofthe ring `there- 'a'fter joinedtogether in any suitable manner, after which the opening is preferably rlhe several parts of the hat arev kband or liap 3 is made narrower than por. y
ing; its upper edge .united continuously tov the edge of the top portion by a hermetic flush Seam, and an annular brim portionzof rubber having its inner edge united to the lower edge of Said annular crown portion il ,4i/111,180
by a similarA joint all the parts being,r of thin material resulting in ready 'reversr bility.
.2. Ae an aricle of manufacture al reversible Abrimined bathing` cap comprising` a crown portion and a` brim portion of sheet rubber .unit-ed continuously edge to edge in a hermetic flush seam, and an annular liap liming` its edgel united to said seam by a hermetic joint.
