BELLnw, a citizen of United States; residing at Lexington, in the county of Dawson and State of llebraslza have invented new and useful Improvements in Climbing Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification. v

This invention relates to toys, part-icu' larly to those of the automatic type, and'has for its object the provision of toy o erating upon the gravity principle and including vertical support up which moves a figure representing a bear supposed to be in pursuit of other figures representing negroes lodged at diiierent points in the length of the support, the arrangement being suchthat when the bear reaches each negro figure he will carry the latter down to 1116 005 50111 or the device and throw him off, after which the bear reascends and bringsdownthe next figure, and so on, until all the figures have been dislodged whereupon the bear ascends to the top of the support presumably to reach the representation of a cub at said top.

An important'objiectis the provision of a device of the above mentioned character in which the principle involved is merely that oi gravity, a weight being provided for moving; the bear upwardly and the successive dislodged by the bear counterbalanc ing' this weight and causing'the bear to'de scend until the successive figures are thrown oft whereupon the weightavill resume its action oi moving the bear upwardly. 1

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a suitable base tornied' actually as aiblo'ck'of wood of suitable dimensions. Secured to and rising froin this base is a hollow support or stand 11 within the upper end of which is journale'd a shaft 12 having its ends projecting beyond 'the standar'd and formed as cranks 13'. Secured upon this shaft within the standard is'a pulley l4. Secured upon the upper extreniity of the standard is a smallfigure 15 representing, a bear cub and this figure is stationary and provided partly or ornamental purposes and partly to rep resent the goal to be reached in the operation of the device. it should be stated that the standard is'i irovided in its front side with a longitudinal slot 16 which extends throughout its length. i

In order to increase the interest of the device I provide a plurality of figures 29 formed as the representation of human be,- ings and adapted to beheld upon the standard 11 at intervals'by means of a pair of pins 30 extending from the bodyof'each figure 29 and loosely engaged within holes 31 in the front of the standard. These figures 29 vhave arms 32 partially embracin'gfthe standard and have inclined legs 33""terminating in weighted feet 34:. 30 are fe'ngaged within the holesS1 the handle 24 of the spring rod 23 whereupon the catch 22 will disengage the lug 21 and the spring pressed cover 19 will fly open. When the shout of the bear figure engages the lower end of the body of the first figure 29 the figure -will be moved upward-slightly and, the pins 30 will be disengaged from the holes 31. The weight of this figure 29 will then rest upon the bear figure 2 7 and the combined weights of these two figures will overloalance the weight 26 and the bear figure 27 will descend carrying with it the first figure 29;

As the bear figure reenters the receptacle 18 thfeet 34 or the figure 29 will strike upon the upper ends of the blocks 17 which will result in overthrowing the figure 29' which will then :Eallonto the base 10. Being thus relieved of thelweight ofthe figure 29 the bear will reascend the standard and will engage and carry down the succeeding figure 29 in exactly the same manner. This operation continues until the uppermost figure 29 is carried downand overthrown whereupon the bear will Once more reascend the standard to the very top thereof and join the cub figure.

From the l oregoing'description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive toy which will be highly amusing and entertaining in use, which will be comparatively automatic in action after being started, and

which will require very little skiILand no special knowledge in its setting. As the parts are few, and the constructionsimple there 'Wlll be practically nothing to get out offorder and the device should therefore have 'a 'longlife;

A toy of the character described comprising a base, a slotted hollow standard rising therefrom, a pulley journaled in the top of the standard, a cord trained over said pulley and carrying a weight, a figure slidable exteriorly of the standard and carrying a guide extending through the slotand connected with said cord, in combination with a plurality of figures arranged one above another along and detachably connected with the standard and adapted to be successively disloc ged by said first named figure whereby to over balance said weight and cause descent oi? the first named figure, said second named. figures being weighted with the center oi gravity near the standard whereby the second named fig ures will slidably engage the standard subsequent to dislodginent from their initial positions thereon, and an obstruction on said base engaged by the second named figure upon descent thereof whereby to effect dislodgment from engagement upon the first named figure.
