BED FOR CHILDREN OR INFANTS.
Application filed March 16, 1922. Serial No. 544,096.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l[. JULIUS Sum), a citizen of Hungary, residing at New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds for Children or Infants, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to beds, commonly known as cribs, for infants or children, having for a general object to provide an improved and novel form of crib, and further to provide a crib which may be readily folded to compact form when not in use.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings 1s a perspective View of a crib constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view showing the crib in collapsed condition.
Fig. 4c is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of crib.
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of this modified crib in collapsed condition.
As here embodied my improved crib comprises the corner posts 10 joined along the sides by fixed bottom rails such as 11 rigidly connected at their ends thereto. A fixed top rail 12 extends along the rear side, while the front side has a fixed horizontal rail 13 extending therealong midway of the vertical distance between the bottom rails 11 and top rail 12. To this rail 13 is hinged as at 16 a wall section 17 which completes the front side of the crib, and which may be secured in upright position by spring catches 18 thereon engaging suitable sockets in the posts 10. I
At the head and foot of the crib are top and bottom end rails 20 and 21 each divided midway of its length into two sections hinged together as at 22 these sections being hinged in turn to the posts as indicated at 23 in Fig. 3. Vertical slats 24 compose the bodiesof the crib walls, the hinged element comprising a suitable frame in which are vertical slats 24.
Slidably mounted in guide 25 under the front bottom rail 11 is a toilet seat 26 having a hinged support leg 26 which is normally folded under seat 26 and held there by a pair of spring clips 26. To form arms for this seat, when the latter is in use I provide as part of the wall of the hinged element 17 a pair of adjustable members 27 which are hinged adjacent their removed edges as at 28 to swing on vertical axis, to and between the top and bottom rails of the element 17. These members 27 are held in normal position by means of catches 29 of usual type and have their adjacent edges curved backwardly from one another as at 30 to form arm rests. To fill the space between these curved edges, under normal conditions, the slats 24 thereof toward their adjacent edges are of tubular construction and have slidable therein the rods 32 which normally project downwardly from said slats asshown, displacement of the rods 32 being prevented by pins 33 thereon engagtended position by the frame of the usual sprling which rests on lugs 38 on the bottom rai s 11.
4 In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modified arrangement in which the ends of the crib comprise the short fixed sections 40 to which are hinged as at ll the movable sections 42 and 43 which are hinged in turn to one another as at 4 1; with this arrangement, when the crib is collapsed. as in Fig. 5, a space is left along one side which may accommodate the mattress indicated at 45.
As will be apparent, the hinged member 17- may be swung down to facilitate arrangement of the child in the crib, or of the bedding of the latter, while if it is desired 7 vention as defined in the appended claims."
- 7 one side and rest on the lugs on the opposite side, any suitable handle being attached to the spring on itsfree side.
It" will be understood that various other changesand modifications might be made in the construction of the crib without departing from the spirit and scope of the in- Havingthus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows: i
1. 'A crib comprising wall elements, a seat slidably held under one of said wall elements', and a pair of members hinged to said last mentioned wall element and adapted to be swung outwardly to form arms for said seat.
2. A crib comprising wall elements, a seat slidably held under one of said wall elements, and a pair of members hinged to and forming part of said last mentioned wall element and adapted to be swung outwardlycto form arms for 'the said seat.
3. A crib comprising side and end walls, one of said side walls comprising a fixed lower section and an upper section hinged to said lower section, a seat slidably held under said lower section, and a pair of members hinged to said upper"-section and adapted to form arms for said seat when the upper section is swung down.
4. A crib comprising side and end walls,
one of. said side walls comprising a fixed lower section and an upper section hinged to said lower section, a seat slidably held under said lower section, and a pair of members hinged to said uppersection and adapted to form arms for said seat when the upper section is swung down, said members normally formingiwall port ons of sald upper sect1on.-
5. A crib comprising side and end walls,
"one of said side walls comprising a fixed lower section and an upper section hinged to said lower section, a seat slidably held under said lower section, and a pair of members hinged to said upper section and adapted to form arms for said seat when theupper section is swung down, said members normally forming wall portions of said upper section, and being hinged at opposed sides and formed with their adjacent sides spaced apart toward their lower ends, vertically extending tubular slats forming portions of said members, and rods freely slidable in said slats.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. 4
