Application filed February 15, 1922. Serial No. 536,650.
To LL/ZZ if/lona 'it may concer/t.'
Ee it .known that ive ioni. Si, a citizen of the United Si lies, ding in the borough of Manhattan, ci county, and State of New York, and Mic rn il. innir, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of lings, city and State of New York, liar-.fe inrented certain new` and useful Improvements vin riurted Back Molds for Cloth-Covered 'Buttons, of which the following is a speci'ication.
Our improvements appertain to the so called molds or backs vused in the forniation of buttons faced with cloth or anaiogous flexible material, said molds being each provided with a rearJt-uft constituting the means of attachment of the button, considered in a unitary sense, as applied to a. garment or other article for use, all in a manner Well known inthe prior state of the art; our inventionv consisting essentially in the speciiic construction, combination and arrangement of parts and appliances herein described and claimed, and, distinctive features relating to the means for, and method of, elfectually securing the component parts of the button together substantially as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,
Fig. l, is an elevation, partly .in central transverse section, of a completed button embodying the essential features of our in- `vent-ion;
Fig. 2, '1s a central vtransverse section4 of our vimproved mold oi backing as used in the structure shown in Fig. l, the facing and cap shell being omitted;
Fig. 3, is a vieiv like unto Fig. 2, showing a modification;
Fig. 1l, is a transverse central section of one form of colletadapted for use in our combination Fig. 5, is a top or inner face view of the parts shown in 2;
Fig. 6, is a section like unto Fig. 2, showing a modification in the construction of the collet;
Fig. 7, is an isometrical cross section of the collet shown in Figs. 2 and 5;
Fig. 8, is a top or inner face view of the construction shovvn in Fig. 6;
Fig. 9, is an isometrical view of the Wad or pad used in conjunction with our imJ proved construction of button back;
Fig. l0, is a side oredge'elevation of the construction shown in Figs. 1,' 2 and 5, the facing or cover, and its shell cap being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. ll, is `a central transverse section of our improved backing, showing'still another modification in the application of the collet;
Fig. l2, is a view ofthe innerside of a cap shellsuch as used vin securing thecloth` k.facing to our improved backing.
j, is the usual cloth or flexible facing Aof the completed'butt'on, and c, the cap shell, also of usual constructiomupon which said flexible facing f, is mounted, and vwhich affords the means whereby the 'said facing is secured directly to the .collet`7c, and hence to the backing B, considered in a unitary sense. We do not claim any novelty in so far kas the facing f, and its cap shell "c, are concerned, our invention relating more 4particularly to the speciic construction ofthe collet, in conjunction With the method of securing the tuft fabric t, thereto 'and'also to the filler-Wad to, in such'manner'as to attain practically an integral structure 'of vvmold or backing B, in which said tiift member is positivelyincorporated,` and from which it cannot be dislodged or separated under ordinary conditions of use.
lWhat for convenience may be designated as the latta'ehment-fabric t, consists of a 'suitable blank ofy fibrous or textile material formed centrally, and in "a manner Well vknown inthe art, With the bulbous tuft tx,
by means ofl which thecornpleted button is secured to a garment, or other article as heretofore. l
^t will be seen that the mold or backing B, consists of three parts, namely, said attachment tuft fabric t, t", lthe Wad or ^filler pad tu, and the vcollet lof-the latter fbeing by preference lformed of sheet metal,
die-stamped into shape for applicat'on'to the tivo otherparts name'd;-'the filler 'pad or yvad w, consisting of a plate lor thickness of cardboard or other suitable fibrous material of a shape corresponding to the configuration of the completed button. Thus, in the accompanying drawings, said llerpad or Wad w, is shown as consisting of a round disc in conformity with the circular shape of the completed button, the construction of which is shown by Way of eXemplication therein, it being understood in this connection that We do not limit our inven- Q Laaepvi vtion in this respect, and that substantially the same structure and, method of formation may be employed in the formation of other shapes of button With like results and advantages,-the gist ofthe invention consist- .ing essentially in forming the inner edge of 4f, or may consist of larger spaced apart l teeth or barbs, as in Figs. 2, 6, 7 and ll, as may be found most expedient in accordance with the character and requirements of the button involved.
ln Fig. ll, ot' the drawings, these barbs or serration le', are shown as penetrating through the atachment-tuft fabric t, and then clinched thereon, With the Wad, w, resting against said clinched portions ot the teeth or serrations 17s, Whereas in Figs. 2, 3 and 6, the serrations not only penetrate through the cloth t, but also into the tiller Wad w. In either alternative construction the result is the same in that vthe tutt cloth t, With its bulbous tutt 15X, is iirmly secured to the iller w, and to the collet 7c, When the peripheral overlap 752, of the latter is folded over and 'forcibly set against the circumferential edge of said iller Wad w.
The peripheral overlap k2, of the collet 7c, may consist of a plurality of equi-distant tongues or flanges, as in Figs. 2, 3, 5, 7 and l1, or of a continuous circumferential edge of the collet 7c, as in Figs. d, 6 and 8, the inturning and stamping down ot Which against the filler Wad w, constitutes an annular bearing shoulder as shown particularly in Figs. Ll, 6 and 8. Furthermore, this annular rim may be serrated as indicated in Fig. 1l', to facilitate the crimping operation if desired.
When the backing B, is thus constructed it is practically impossible for the attachment-tut-fabric. (usually a suitable grade of canvas, so called) to pull out or become deranged or loose under ordinary conditions ot use. By our construction, also, We are enabled to use a i'iiinimum size oit attachmenttutt-cloth or fabric, particularly in the term shown in Fig. 3, in which the circumferential edge ot said fabric t, is confined Within the collet 7c, and between the latter and the filler Wad w, but does not extend between the peripheral edge oit the ller 1.1:, and the opposed sides ot the collet as in the other iigures of the draWings,-the serrations 702, being relied upon in any and all cases to positively anchor the tutt tx, to the backing l. y
its before intimated, the drawings exemplify a practical embodiment of our improvements as applied to a button ot ci i'- cular configuration, although the essential features et the invention may be embodied in the construction ot buttons oit other shapes, as` oval, square, triangular, hexagonal, etc.,'so that We do'not limit ourselves to the identical torni and construction of parts shown, since various modifications in detail may be resorted to,` .in adapting the essential Yfeatures ot 'our construction to the varying requirements et manufacture and trade Without departing from the spirit and intent of our invention in this respect.
lli/'hat We claim as our invention and dosire to secure by Letters Fatent is,
l. A button `backing of the character designated, con'iprising a iibrous filler-Wad, an attachrncnt-tutt-abric, and a collet formed with preformed serrations penetrating said attachinent-tutt-tabric and also with marginal overlap by means of Which the component parts oit the backing are clamped together, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. A button. backing ot the character -ted,vcomprising a Vtibrous iiller Wad, au attachment-tut-abric, and collet formed with serr tions -which penetratl said attachment-tutt tabric and protrude into said filler Wad, saidV collet being also termed with marginal overlap by means ot which the component parts ot the bac-king are clamped together, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
