GEORGE DOUGLASS, OF BBIDGEPOBT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIKE-BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,074, dated October 28, 1873; application filed August 16, 11573.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DOUGLASS, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spike-Bars, of which the following is a specification Bars for drawing spikes on railroad-tracks and in other places are very liable to be broken, and they fail first in the claws. In fact, the claw is the only part liable to fail,
and if one claw fails the bar is rendered usesponding parts.
A is the lever, which is formed with a socket, B, in its end. This socket is preferably square or angular and made in the enlarged end of the lever, as represented in the drawing. C and D are the claws, which are made with from each shank.

H is a pin, which passes through a hole which is bored through the socket and through the jaws, so as to cut a half circle This pin is made somewhat tapering, so that it can readily be withdrawn. The jaws are made in the usual form, so that when they are fastened in place, as seen in the drawing, the bar may be used in the usual manner, and for all the purposes to which such bars are usually applied. If one of the jaws fail a duplicate jaw, which is kept on hand, is inserted, so that no time is lost. The jaws may be made in pairs to fit spikes of different shapes, or to adapt the bar for other purposes, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A spike-bar having its jaws made separate, and removably attached to the lever, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
