UNITED STATES PA'IENT OEEIcE.
LEWIS C. OROOKER, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,067. dated October 28, 1873; application filed September 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LEWIs C. GnocKER, of Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Spindle-Steps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved spindle-step. Fi g. 2 is a vertical section through lthe center of the same; Fig. 3 detail in perspective.
y In spindle-steps as heretofore constructed, dirt and dust are liable, lespecially in cotton and .woolen mills, to collect around the spindle and between it and the step, and also tobe carried with the oil down the feed-holes to the foot of the spindle, the free revolution of which is thus obstructed, and the wear greatly increased. To overcome these difficulties and to exclude all dirt and dust from the bearing is the object of my invention, which consists in a sleeve or tube, which is encircled by a band or ring of felt, or similar substance, and is iitted within the step, the felt serving as a strainer to preventany dirt or dust in the oil used'for lubricating, from reaching the bearing, while the dirt or dust is excluded from between the spindle and the tube by a cap fitting over the latter and attached to the spindle.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents the spindie step, which is made hollow, the bottom of the interior serving as a bearing for the foot of the spindle b. Near the top of this step is an with a iiange, 7, which rests on a shoulder, '8:
and this tube is secured iirmly in place by spreading the ange to increase its diameter Awith a suitable set Around the tube d is placed a band or ring, e, of felt or similar substance, through which the oilV in the chamber 6 passes to openings 9 in the tube, from which it passes directly to the spindle-bearing. `The oil is thus strained, and the liability of the passage of any dirt or dust to the bearing is effectually prevented. The dirt is prevented from getting between the spindle b and the tube d, and Working its way down, by a cap, f, secured tightly around the spindle b and titting down over the top of the tube d. C is an outer cap, which fits snugly around the top of the cap f, and extends down over the upper part ofthe step A. This cap serves to e\ clude dirt and dust, and may be raised to expose the groove c and holes 5 when it is desired to introduce oil into the oil-chamber 6. lOn the inside of this cap C is a shoulder, 10, which extends into the groove c, and as the oil works up the spindle b and onto the outside of the cap f it is thrown off by the centrifugal force against the inside of the cap O and runs down' into the groove c, whence it is returned to the oil-chamber through the holes 5.
My improved step may be applied to vertical spindles or shafts of any description, and by its use the delay and inconvenience heretofore occasionedbythebearings becoming obstructed with dirt are entirely avoided.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The tube d with its band or ring c of felt, in combination with the step A, and spindle b with its cap f, constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 19th day of September, A. D. 1873.
