w it known that l, l'iiv'ron citi/,en of the United States, residing at Chicago. in the county oit Cook and State ot illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Cars. oi' which thc following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway cars. and has for its object to provide a new and iinproved car end .structure which will have the necessary strength and rigidity to withstand the variousl stresses to which the end walls ol' railway 'tre-ight ears are subjected when in service, 1Where the contents of a car consist ot' grain or other material in bulk ot the character usually loaded in. box cars, or it the material is of the character usually loaded in gondola cars1 for example, coal, crushed stone. or the like. the greatest stress imposed on the end walls ot the car is in the region of the lower halt ot the wall. This portion ot the `end wall. is also subject to severe stresses incident 'to the inertia thrusts ot' the-cargodue to the sudden starting` or stopping` ot the car. part-icalarly when the cargo consists oitl heavy niovable objects. such as railroad rails. or car wheels. Accordingly it is an object ot iny invention to provide a car end 'structure which is so formed and Y 1 it reinforced as to be strongest in the region oti such other incidental objects as will appear from the following description.
ferred embodiments in the accompanying drawing. wherein- Fig: 1 is an elevation ot an end wall structure made in accordance with my invention7 applied to a. gondola car;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2 2 or rig. i.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in section of the corner construct-ion ot' the end wall shown in Fig, 1, this view being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. et is a view similar to Fig'. 23. illustrating a iuodified'torni ot end post.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the. several figures of the drawings.
ln the drawings I have shown rny irn- Serial No.. 462,147.
proved car end Wall structure in connection with a car of the gondola type, though the principles disclosed could obviously'be embodied in an end wall structure suitable for hox cars.
Referring irst to Figs. l to 3 inclusive of the drawings, l() designates the side sills, 1l 'the side walls. l2 the corner posts, and 13 the flooring of a gondola. air. The end wall of the car consists. preferably, of a single metal sheet lsl- `formed with a plurality of parallel corrugations 15 which extend horizontally across the end and terminate within the edges oit the sheet. so as to provide flat inarginal portions 1G. The corrugations project outwardly from the plane of the sheet and preferably increase in depth uniformly from the top to the bottoni of the sheet, so as to provide the greateststrength adjacent the lloor of the car. Theflat marginal portions 1G adjacent the vertical edges of thesheets are bent at right angles to the body portion ol the sheet to provide attaching flanges 17 which overlap the outer surfacesof the sidey walls ot the car and are lirmly secured to the corner posts by bolts 18. 19. The lower Inargin ot the sheet is secured to the end sill 20 by rivets 2l. By providing the end sheet 14 with corrugations having the greatest strength adjacent the floor of the car. it is possible to use a relatively light end sill and thereby minimize the weight ot' the car without sacrificing the strength and rigidity necessary to provide a irm attachment of the end sheet to the under framing of the car. and to maintain the side and draft sills of the under 'framing in their proper alignment. rl`lie end sill Q0 is illustrated in Figs. l and 2 as consisting` of an angle bar arranged with its vertical flange Q2 against the outer face of the sheet and its horizontal flange Q3 secured by rivets Q4; to the Side sills l0. The end sill may be similarly secured to the draft sills and to intermediate sills when the latter are employed.`
ln order to provide further reinforcement for the end structure adjacent the corners 'ot' the car, I preferably provide vertically extending angular posts 25, which are provided in each case with a flange 26 which overlaps and is secured to the sidewall of the car, and with a flange 27 which overlaps the extremities of the co-rrugations 15. The
:iffiaaeae the combination with an end sheet lia inig horizontal corrugations which. increase in depth toward the bottoni et the sheet and terminate within the vertical edees thereof, of separately formed angular members overlapping the margins olthe sheet and cured to the body ot the car.
12. ln an end structure for railway ears, the combination with an end sheet having horizontal' corrngations which inerease in depth toward the bottom ot the sheet and terminate within thevertical edges thereof, of separately formed angular post members having flanges overlapping and secured to the entremities ot said eorrugations and flanges overlapi)ingy and secured to the side Walls ot the car.
13. The eomhination with a gondola ear. ot an end sheet having 'dat portions along its upper, lower and vertical margins and formed in. its intermediate portion with horizontal, rigidity/ing ribsproportioned so as to increase in strength toward the bottom ot the sheet. and attaching members overlapping said sheet and having' flanges thereon attached to the body 0i the car.
14. The combination with the corner posts ot a gondola. car, ot a sheet metal end structure having 'flatmargins secured thereto and formed with horizontal corrugations increasing in depth toward the bottoni of said structure and terminating witl in the edges thereof7 and angular attaching members overlapping said structure and fastened to the hody ot said car.
15. The combination `with the corner posts ot a gondola car, ot an end sheet having tlat with horizontal corrugations increasing in depth toivardthe bottom ot said sheet and terminating within the edges thereoft.r and attaching members overlappingy the margins ot' said sheet and secured to the corrugations therein and having tlanp'es thereon attached to the hody' of the car.
1.6. he combination with the corner posts of a PLfondola cai'.y of an end sheet havingilat margins and side flanges secured thereto and formed with horizontal corruzf {ations increasing in depth toward the hottoin oi said sheet and terminating within the edges thereof7 and angular attaching, members overlappingr said sheet and seciilred to the hody ot the car.
1T. The" -omhination with `the corner posts ot a gondola. ear. oi' an end sheet havine' flat margins and side lianges secured to said corner posts and formed with horizontal corrugations increasing in depth toward the bottoni and terminating within the edges thereo. and atftaehinggmen'iheis overlappingr said sheet and secured te the eorrupations thereof and having ianeges overlapping the side. tiauges on said sheet and seem-ed to said posts.
margins secured Vthereto and formed.
1S, The combination with the Cornel posts et a gondola ear,V otan endis'tructure havingr fiat margins secured to saldpplsits and termed with horizontal eorrugationsv extending outwardly .from the plane oli said posts and increasing'in depth toward the*l bottom of the sheet, and means for seeuringgj"v said sheet to said corner posts.
19. The combination with the structures ot a gondola oar, of an end sheet having fiat margins and side and top flanges, and formed with corrugations merg-ine one into the other a'nd .progressively increasing in depth toward the bottom ot said sheet, attaching members overside ,wall l apping,f the margins of said Sheet and having ianges thereon extending over said si'cle flanges and secured with said anges to the side wall structures of the car.
20. In a gondola ear.y an end sheet having angularly disposed side anges, angular corner posts in the angles between said flanges and said sheets, and exterior attaching' members overlappingq the margins of said sheet; and having flanges thereon secured to the -side Wall structures of 'the ear.
