7 '0 all whom it may concern; 4 Be it known thatol, JARED S. LAPHAM, a citizen of the United States of America,- residing at Northville, in the county of 5 Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful, improvements in Cover Drains for Washing Machines, of which the following is a specificatiom reterence being had therein to the accompany,- 1o ing drawings.
. The invention relates to washing machines, and particularly todish-washing machines, of that type in which the washing fluid is thrown out in spray by the action of an impeller. Such machines are provided With a turned back for access to the washing chamber whenever dishes are to be inserted or removed. Inasmuch as the inside of this cover is exposed to the spray, it will be covered with suds and if thrown back, will cause a drip upon the floor. To avoid this result I have devised a construction in which all'of the liquid adhering to the cover is directed to a drain, this being-in proximity to the drain for the receptacle, so that a single pail or other container may receive the drainage from both.

A is the tank or receptacle,in which the washing is accomplished, and B is a cover for this tank which is hinged atone side, as indicated at C. To form a liquid tight seal, the cover B is provided with an in Wardly extending flange D surrounding the same and fitting inside of the receptacle and is further provided with an outwardly extending flange E which overlaps the top of the receptacle. When the cover is turned back on its hinge, it vwill extend vertically 5o downward adjacent to the end wall of the receptacle, as indicated in Figures 1 and 2.. and in such position all adhering liquid will drain towards the lower end.

hinged cover which may be inwardly extending flange F is secured to the flange D on that side of the cover which is at the bottom when in open position. Between this flange F and the inner face of the cover, there is arranged an inclined flange G, which slopes towards the center of the lower edge of the cover or to any other convenient point for the location of a drain aperture H; To guard this aperture from escape of spray when the cover is in normal position, there is arranged a guard flange 1, preferably of trough-shape and spaced sufficiently from the flange G for the passage of the drainage liquid between the same,
With the construction described, after the machine has been in use and it is desired to remove the dishes therefrom, the cover B is thrown back, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Here the liquid adhering to the inner face will gradually drain downward into the trough formed by the flanges F and G and passing beneath the guard flange I will drain out through the aperture H.
pail J is provided for receiving the liquid from the receptacle drained through the cock K. As this pail is also beneath the drain aperture H, it will receive the drippingson said aperture.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a washing machine, the combination with a liquid containing receptacle, of a hinged cover therefor adapted to extend downward from the hinge when in open position, said cover being provided with an inwardly-extending flange which fits within the inner walls of the receptacle in closed po- 7 sition, a drainage aperture in the portion of said flange which is at the bottom when the cover is in open position, and a retaining flange for directing all drainage" towards said aperture.
2. In a washing machine, the combination with a liquid containing receptacle, of a hinged cover therefor adapted to be turned downparallel to the side of the machine when in open position, a flange on said cover extending inward therefrom adjacent to and fitting Within the inner walls of the receptaole in the closed position of the cover, said having a drainage aperture in the portion thereof which is at the bottom in the open position of the cover, a flange for directing the drainage liquid towards said aperture, and a guard flange extending over 1 s'a1d aperture to prevent the direct passage of spray therethrough.
3. In a washing machine, the combination with a liquid containing receptacle, of a hinged cover therefor adapted in open position to be turned downward parallel to the side of said receptacle, a flange on said cover extending inward adjacent to the inner walls of said receptacle when the cover is in closed position, said flange having an aperture in the portion thereof whichis at the bottom in the open position of the toward said aperture, a retaining flange for holding the liquid upon said inclined flange,

In a Washing machine, the combination with a receptacle, of a cover for said receptacle, means arranged at one edge of said cover for directing all draining liquid to a single discharge point, and guard means for said discharge point to prevent the direct passage of spray therethrough.
5. In a Washing machine, the combination witha liquid containing receptacle, of a cover hinged thereto adapted to be turned down when the receptacle is open to a position substantially parallel to the side of said receptacle, and means carried by the cover for directing all draining liquid to a discharge point at the lower edge of the cover when the said cover is in turned down position.
