PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed April 14,
To @ZZ whom it on co3/ concern Be it known that l, ROBERT O. ESHELMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident ot Hyde Park, in the county of l/Vestmoreland and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Pipe lrench, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to pipe wrenches and the general object of the invention is to provide a pipe wrench having novel and eective adjusting means adapting the wrench to pipes ot different diameters.
The nature ot the invention and its distinctive features and characteristics will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part ot this specifica-tion, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one eX- ample ot the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying` my invention with the locking lever in release position;
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation with the locking lever in locking position;
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3, Figure 2.
ln carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a movable jaw is provided having a shank 11. A. handle 12 constitutes at its front end a fixed jaw. Both jaws are toothed, the teeth on the lixed jaw being in a plane inclined to lie oblique to the axis ot the handle l2, the row oit teeth sloping forwardly or toward the movable aw l() in practice so that the space between the jaws is slightly 'flaring V.from the inner ends oi' the jaws outwardly. L strap 13 of til-shape is disposed at opposite sides of the iixed jaw and alords a space at the back edge of the lined jaw to accommodate the shank 11 to permit of a relative sliding movement of said shank and handle 12 with its hired The strap 123 is secured at one end to the lixed jaw by a transverse rivet 142 or equivalent means to permit pivotal movement of said strap, while rearward ot the pivot 14; a transverse pin or pivot 15 extends through slots 16 in the sides oit the strap 13 and through the fined jaw, the slot permitting a limited movement of the handle 12 to and from the shank 11 oi' the movable jaw 10 with .he pin 14 as an axis. Along that edge oi the shank 11 adjacent to the handle 12 1922. Serial No. 552,672.
rack teeth 17 are provided on said shank and a pinion 18 adapted to mesh with said rack is turnably mounted on the pin 15 or an equivalent pin, said pinion being disposed in a slot 12a in the fixed jaw. The rocking of the handle 12 about the pivot 14 serves to engage or disengage the pinion 18 and rack teeth 17. lilith the pinion disengaged the shank 11 may be freely slid forward or back along the handle 12.
A lever 19 is secured at its front end by a pivot 20 in the slot 12a of handle 12 and said lever has a tooth 21 or a plurality ot' teeth to engage between teeth ot' the pinion 18. The lever 19 when swung outwardly permits tree relative sliding movement of the handle 12 and shank 11 and when swung inwardly to the position in Figure 2 and the pinion 18 engaged with the rack teeth 17, said pinion cannot turn because or' being held by the teeth 21 and thus the wrench is locked in adjusted position.
l would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, l do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit ot' the invention as deiined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A wrench comprising a movable jaw having a shank, a separate handle constituting at its front end a lined jaw, a U-shaped strap secured to the opposite sides of the l'xed j aw and pi vot-ally connected at its one end to said fixed jaw, and connected to the fixed aw at a point distant from said pivot by a slot and pin connection, rack teeth on said shank, a pinion on the iixed jaw, and means to lock said pinion against rotation.
2. A wrench comprising a movable jaw having a shank, a separate handle constituting at its front end a fixed aw, a Ushaped strap secured to the opposite sides of the ixed aw and pivotally connected at its one end to said iiXed aw, and connected to the iXed jaw at a point distant from said pivot by a slot and pin connection, rack teeth on said shank, a pinion on the liXed jaw, and a lever pivoted at its front end to the fixed jaw to swing laterally outward or inward, and means on said lever to engage said pinion and lock said member against movement.
