To all whom it may concern:

.Be it known that I, WELwoon MURRAY, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a n ew and Improved Trimming, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a reverse boX- plaited and puffed trimming for dresses, 8vo., in which, by reason of the plaits of one side being made midway between those of the other side, they have the form of an ordinaryT box-plait at one margin of the trimming, separated into two members at the other margin, and merged into the two adjacent boX-plaits ther-eat. This division of the box-plait and reversal of the plaits forms two puffs in the middle portion of the trimming, which unite with each other at the end of the puff at one side of the trimming, and at the other side they unite with the puifs of the adjoining plaits, and between said puffs is a depression in the cloth, beginning in the middle of the box-plait at one side of the trimmings', and becoming the space between the plaits at the other side.

The machine which I use for making this trimming consists of a pair of plaiting-rollers with puffing teeth or formers in one, and sockets or dies in the other, and four plait'mgblades for plaiting the cloth and pressing the plaits between thercllers, so contrived that the pairs of blades which are diagonal to each other act together, and each pair acts alternately with the other pair in vsuch manner as plaits, which constitute the reverse boX-plaits.

Figure l is a plan view of a piece of my improved reverse boX-plaited trimmings, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the plaiting-rollers and horizontal section of the plaiting-blades which I use for making said trimmings.

A represents the trimmings, with short boxplaits B on each margin, each plait having a depression, C, in it, surrounded by a puff, D, the depression extending to the opposite margin, and becoming the dividing space between the adjacent plaits of that side, as at E, and the puffs uniting with the puffs of the adjacent plaits separated by said space E.

To make this trimming I use a pair of plaiting-rollers, G, with puffing-farmers I, composed of teeth in a Wide deep groove in the middle of one roller, and corresponding sockets in the other, and four plaiting-blades, J J and K K.

The cloth is passed downward between the y rollers by any suitable guide, and while the rollers are at rest one pair of blades, say K K', move down and press the cloth on the rollers, and make a fold or plait, and deliver it to the rollers to be drawn in when they move again, and be pressed by them. Then the other pair of blades move down at the next operation, thus making reverse plaits at each operation, and making the plaits of one operation re verse to those of the other.

This trimming I propose to make in silk, lace, muslin, .or any other suitable goods for trimming, and of one piece or strip only, or two or more combined. I will stitch the plaits together along the margin, as shown at L, to keep them in the form in which they are arranged by the machine.

The form or arrangement of the puffs may be varied at will, according to the fullness of the goods, and the shape of the former and dies used. The fullness will be varied by the width of the plaits, and the former and the dies will correspond in length and depth to the width of the plaits and the fullness.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the trim1 ming herein described, consisting essentially of the reverse box-plaits, either with or without the puffs, substantially as shown and set forth.
