IMPROVEMENT IN TRIMMINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. i44,031, dated October 28, 1873; application filed May 24, 1873.

CASE A.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WELwoon MURRAY, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trimming, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a trimming for dresses and other articles of wearing-apparel for ladies, composed of a strip of muslin, lace, silk, or any other suitable textile fabric, with cross-plaits arranged in groups of, say, four or five (more or less) plaits in a group, and plain portions between the plaits of about the same width as the groups thereof.

Figure 1 is a plan or face view of a piece of trimming such as I propose to make. Fig. 2 is an edge view; and Fig. 3, a sectional elevation of some portions of a machine, showing how it can be made.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents a long strip of muslin, lace, or any other goods of which it may be desired to make the trimming,with groups of narrow crossplaits B and narrow plain spaces 0 between the groups of plaits. The plaits may be of any approved width, but generally they will probably range from a sixteenth to a quarter of an inch wide, and probably about four or five in a group will be best, but they will be varied to suit the taste or fancy of the designer. The pieces will be made in about twelve yard lengths, and put up for the trade in the ordinary way of putting up such goods. This trimming can be made in a very simple manner by means of a pair of rolls, D, a plaitingblade, E, and a pressing-blade, F, the rolls having a continuous rotary motion, the plaiting-blade having a continuous forward and backward motion in the direction in which the cloth moves, and the pressing-blade having intervals of pressure against blade E alternating with intervals of freedom from it. The strip to be plaited being arranged between the two blades, also between the rollers, will be merely drawn along by them when the pressing-blade is free from the plaiting-blade, and will not be altered in its shape, but, when pressed up to the plaiting-blade, the edge next to the rollers, when moving toward them, after having drawn back over the cloth, will gather up a fo d in the cloth and press it between the rollers, which pressing it down completes the plait. The width of the plaits will depend on the length of the movement of the plaitingblade, and may be varied by varying it. The alternate action of the pressing-blade F may be produced by a cam-wheel, G, with tappets H, or any other contrivance, the tappets actin g on a rod, 1, and holding the blade up while passing under the rod, but letting it fall after passing the rod. The tappets may be variable to vary the intervals of the pressure and no pressure. I propose to make this trimming either of single or double webs or strips, and either with the plaits bias to the strip, or at a right angle, or any other, to it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a trimming of muslin or other suitable material, consisting of a strip, either single or double, with. groups of cross-plaits, B, and plain portions G, the plaits being at a right, or any other, angle to the strip, substantially as specified.
