ADJUSTABLE Application led May i7,
T0 at whom t may concern.'
Be it known thatl, LUIS Anni, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of "West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable lieg Rest for Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to attachments for chairs and particularly to an improved leg rest for rocking chairs formed to be extended to any desired extent when in use and to b folded and shifted to a position beneath the chair when not in` use.
The object of the invention to provid#` a leg rest which may be positively locked in any of several adjusted positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved simplified construction of leg rest which is comparatively inexpensive and which .will effectively act whenl in use and which may be readily stored beneath the rocking chair when not in use. l
Another object, more specifically, is to provide a leg'rest forrocking chairs, which when not in use, may be disconnected and folded up after which it is stored beneath the chair in su'ch a manner as to not present an unpleasing appearance.
In the accompanying drawingf" Figurejl is a side view of a leg rest disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the same being shown applied to rocking chair.
Figure 2 is a .top plan view of the structure shown in' Figure 1, certain parts being broken away.
Figure 3 is a sectional-view through Figure 1 'on line 3-3 the leg rest being shown folded and stored. away.
``Figure 4 isan enlargedv longitudinal sectional view through the upper adjusting bar shown in Figure l.
Figure 5`v is an enlarged sectional view showing one end of the bar illust-rated in Figure 4;
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view through Figure 4 on lihe Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1- indicates an ordinary rocking chair provided with the usual rochers, seat and legs. ln addition to these members, al bar 2 is provided and also a pair of runways 3 secured`to one of back spindles 4 and to a cross brace 5. Connected to the seat 6 at the center of the front and-- on the REST FOB CHAIRS.
1922. Serial No. 561,676.
under side are brackets 'T and 8 through which the respective pintlestl extend, said pintles projecting from a latch 10. rlhis latch is provided with straight sides and a notch 11 shown in Figures 4 and 5 whereby the hook end 12 may fit over the same against the flat sides and be held in proper position thereby. As .the rocking chair moves, this rectangular construction will cause the bar 13 to move baci; and forth without slipping off of the latch v10.
ln order to positively locl: the hook 12 in engagement with the latch 10, a sliding bolt 14 is provided and held in place by spring 15 while a thumb member ltlis secured theretov and extends through :in opening 1i' in the bar 13. 'lhe bar 13 may be of any desired shape but is preferably U- sha ae in cross section as illustrated in Figure 6, said bar telescopically fitting into an auxiliary bar 1S U-shape in cross section and provided with inturned flanges 19 which will actas a guide for the bar The aiuriliary barlS is pivotally mounted at 20 to a cross bar 21 and is held centrally thereof by suitable'sleeres 22. rlhe bar 13 is provided with an aperture near one' end through which Ia .pin 23 loosely extends, said pin being pressed by a spring 24 so as to always project tl'irough the bar 13 and whenever possible snap through one of the openings 25 in bar 18. Preferably, there are several openings 25 in bar 18 whereby there may be a relative movement ofthe bars -13 and i8 to shift the rod 21 toward or from the chair 1. The rod 21 is mounted in the side standards 26 which side standards are rounded at 27 so as to freely rock. A pad or support 28 is mounted on the upper end of the standards 26, said pad or support being connected with the standards by suitable brackets 29 which i have pins 30 Aextending into the standards. The pad/or support 28 freely swings on the pins 30 so as to readily adjust itself to the position. of the legs of the person using the chair 1.
i-i hook 31 is secured to the lower surface of pad 2S is adapted to fit over the latch i0 when the parts are folded and stored away as shown in dotted lines in'Figure 1 and also as shown in Figure By this arrangement, the pad or support 28 will act to support the front partof the folded or nested leg rest and also act as a covering member for sliding the various parteA from while runways 3 will as a rear which rml comme tlm :slamfflzarnls :u lwr end. llmiulljf mmm@ mi 'lhasa r are'spacell bars 35 nu?
