Description
I. HEYMANN.
"Desk-Covers.
NO. 144,027, `Patented Oct. 28,1873.
Iggy.
UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea;
JACOB HEYMANN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN oEsK-covsns.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,027, dated October 2S, 1873 application filed February 18, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HEYMANN, of
` Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Common- Wealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Covers for Desks and other similar articles of furniture, of Which the following isa specification:
My invention relates to improvements in that class of covers for desks and other similar articles of furniture which are formed semiflexible, and constructed of a series of slats or `strips of Wood placed side by side, and (as dition great strength, durability, and cheap- `ness are obtained, as Well as perfect silence of action.
In carrying out my invention, in place of employing strips or surfaces of cloth or hinges for the purpose of connecting the slats or strips together, I substitute strips of thin sheet spring-steel, which are placed across the strips "or slats of Wood at intervals at right angles to 4the length of the same, and connected to each of such slats or strips by means of screws or other suitable means; but that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same in detail byv aid of the accompanying drawings.
Figure l represents a front view of a desk with my improved cover applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section of the same. f
A represents my improved cover applied to a desk, B. This cover A is composed of a series of slats or strips of Wood, A1, connected together by means of continuous strips of thin sheet spring-steel, A2. These continuous strips of steel A2 are arranged at intervals across the slats or strips A1, at right angles to the length of such slats or strips A1, and are connected to each slat or strip Al by screws or other suitable means. The cover A is arranged to slide in grooves B2 or guides formed in or attached to the sides Bl of the desk B, and is capable of being pushed back along the recess B2, so as to give access to the interior of the desk B, or of being drawn forward to close the same, as desired.
By thus constructing the semi-flexible covers of desks and other similar articles of furniture of slats of Wood connected together by continuous strips of thin sheet spring-steel, it Will be readily seen that all danger of access being obtained to the interior of desks or other articles of furniture by passing a knife between the slats or strips and cutting the flexible material connecting the same is avoided, and that great strength, combined with durability,
cheapness, and evenness of motion is combined With a perfectly smooth upperI surface.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In the manufacture of semidiexible covers for desks and other similar articles of furniture, the combination of the slats or strips Al, strips of sheet-steel A2, and grooves B2 or guides formed in or affixed to the sides B1, substantially as set forth.
JACOB HEYMANN.
