6 Claims.-
1 This invention relates to an articleof furniture having one or more curtains enclosing thespace underneath the top thereof, and particularly to an arrangement for slidably supporting the curtains in proximity of the periphery of such top.
Heretofore, dressing tables of the boudoir type have included curtains positioned adjacent the edgesof the table tops for enclosin the space therebelow. Known arrangements of fixed and movable types employed curtains embodied metallic tent. The present invention stantially non-metallic support of the slidable non-foldable type for the curtains of a dressing table.
The object is to provide a slidable support for the curtains of a dressing table.
In a specific embodiment, the present invention, disclosed in connection with a curtain-enclosed dressing table, comprises a table top provided with a peripheral groove of pre-selected conf guration, and a plurality of discrete elements, each formed in one plane with a configuration complementary to the configuration of the groove for allowing the disposition of the elements in the groove in a slidable manner, the elements being secured in spaced relation to a textile strip which is suitably secured to the curtains. Each element is also formed in a different plane with a configuration which allows expeditious movement of the elements in both rectilinear and curvilinear directions.
The invention will be readily understood from the .following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a plan View of a table top. provided with a specific embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged and exploded view illustrating a detachable connection between the curtain and a specific embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken along the line 44 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 5 and 6 are fragmentary plan views taken along the lines 55 and 66, respectively, of Fig. 4 at the points A and B, respectively, of Fig.1;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged cross-sectional View, simi-; lar to Fig. 4, of an alternate embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross-sectional view, similar to Fig. 4, of a further vention, and
for supporting the 3 parts to a great excomtemplates a subembodiment of the in E. central portion of the Fig. 9 is aview taken along the line 9-4 of Fig.8...
The same reference numerals are employed to designate identical elements appearing inseveral figures of the drawing.
Referring. to Figs. 1 and 2 a table top: H) is? supported by a plurality of spaced legs ll between which arepositionedslidable drawers [2, l3 and 14. Depending from the periphery of the table top is a pair of curtains I5 and H). To facilitate the hanging of these curtains, each has the righthand surface of its uppermost end suitably secured to a first textile band l7, Fig. 3. Spaced in horizontal alignment along the righthand surface of the first textile band I! and suitably fastened thereto, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is a plurality of elements l8, each of which is formed with a centrally depressed portion l9. As shown in Fig. .3, portion l9 projects through an accommodating opening 20 provided in the first textile band H, the portions l9 and openings 20 being covered by the respective curtains I 5 andlfi, as seenfrom the lefthand side in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 3 a second textile band 2| their central portions zontal alignment along the the second textile band 2i in central portion. of such manner as to Dressed portion [9. tions [9 and projections 24 constitute complee mentary members for efiectively establishing a detachable connection between the individual curtains l5 and nor that will be presently explained. The foregoing is afamiliar structure.
In accordance with the specific embodiment includes the periphery of table top 10 in Figs. land 2 provided with a groove 25 of preselectedconfiguration. As shown in Fig. 4, the groove 25 comprises an open side 21 andv a side 28 diametrically opposite thereto both of which sides. lie
metrically opposite sides 29 and 3B lying in individual planes each arranged in other than. a parallel relation relative to the other. A member 35 positioned .in the groove 25 in Fig. 4 is formed groove 25. Thus,
is heldfirmly between members 22 and 23- both of which have. formed into a unitary pro jection 24 to be accommodated in depressed por-' These projections are spaced in. horil6 and the-table top [0 in a mans.
present invention, a.
in individual vertical. planes disposed in parallel relation, and dia 3 the vertical plane embodying one of the respective sides 21 and 28 of the groove '25, and two further diametrically opposite sides each of which lies in a plane coinciding substantially with the plane embodying one of the respective sides 29 and 30 of the groove 25.
In Figs. and 6 each of a plurality of members 35 includes two diametrically opposite sides 36 and 31 positioned in individual vertical planes each of which is disposed in other than parallel relation with the other. Thus, the members 35 are positioned in the groove for slidable movement in a plane parallel with the horizontal plane of the uppermost surface 26 of the table top If), Figs. 2, 5 and 6. The members are arranged in two groups each of which has corresponding surfaces suitably secured to one of a pair of second textile strips 2|, Fig. 3. A suitable opening located at the rear of the table top It) in Fig. 1 enables the individual members 35 of each group thereof to be inserted into and removed from the groove 35. As one of the curtains l5 and I5, Fig. 2, is detachably connected to one of the pair of second textile strips 2|, each of the respective curtains l5 and 55 can be slidably moved in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions with reference to a point 4| on the periphery of the table top it,
Fig. 1. In Fig. 5 one group of members 35 is shown disposed on a convex portion of the periphery of the table top I!) such as at the peripheral portion A in Fig. l; and in Fig. 6 one group members 35 is shown disposed on a concave portion of the periphery of the table top if! such as at the peripheral portion B in Fig. 1. Thus, the members 35 slide equally expeditiously in rectilinear and curvilinear portions of the periphery of the table top H].
In Fig. 7 a groove is provided with a configuration comprising two diametrically opposite sides 46 and 41, of which side 41 lies in a horizontal plane and side 46 is angularly disposed thereto, and an open side 58 and a side 59 diametrically opposite thereto, both of which latter sides are disposed in parallel vertical planes. The side 46 lies at an angle, with reference to the horizontal plane of the table top 10, which is less than a right angle. Positioned in the groove 45 isa member formed with a configuration compleentary to that of the groove 45.
In a horizontal plane the member is provided with a wedge-like configuration which is substantially identical with that of the members 35 in Figs. 5 and 6. The member 50 serves the same purpose as the one served by the members 35-mentioned hereinbefore. Thus,-a plurality of members 50 may be substituted for the members 35 in Figs. 5 and 6 for supporting the curtains l5 and I6 as hereinbefore described. Obviously, the sides 45 and 41 of the groove 45 in Fig. 7 can be interchanged. This means that the respective sides of the member 55 are also interchanged so that the configurations of the groove 45 and members 55 are complementary to each other.
In Fig. 8 a substantially circular groove 55 supports a substantially spherical member 55 for slidable movement therein. As shown in Fig. 9 a plurality of spherical members 55 is slidably supported in the circular groove 55 for the same purpose as the members 35 in the groove 25, Figs. 4, 5 and 6. In Fig. 8, left-hand surface 5'! of the member 56 permits the fastening thereto of the textile strip 2! in a manner similar to that illustrated in Fig. 3. Thus, a plurality of members 55 in Fig. 9 are arranged for slidably supporting the curtains I5 and IS in the manner previously explained with reference to Figs. 1 through 6.
The specific forms of the invention described in the foregoing are for the purpose of this illustration, and the invention is not to be limited thereto. It is to be understood that other modifications within the scope of the invention set forth in the appended claims will occur to those skilled in the art. For example, it is obvious that a single curtain can be substituted for the pair of curtains l5 and I5, Fig. 2, within the scope of the invention.
