To'aZZw/lomitmay conce/ra: v y
Be it known that lf, Dennis l; fir-inneren@ a citizen ot the United States, andresident olf Atlantic,l in the county oi C'ass andState oi' iowa, have invented a certain new and. useitul Road Sign, of which the [following is a specilication.
The object oi' myinvention 'is'to provide a combined sign board and-` encelpost ot simple. durable, 4and inexpensive 4construction that may be readily7 quickly and easily, driven with a mallet into the ground;` in line with a tence and then beapermanently secured to the fence wires, thereby ioiiming an additional and re-intorcing tence post for the tenceand;
My further object is to provide asign board holderformed integral with the fence post to which a sheet metal sign `board' may be readily, quickly and veasilyapplied and rmly held as a permanent sign, and which holder is also provided with auxiliary sign board receiving and supporting members so arranged that temporary signs maybe 'readily, quicklyland easily applied Ion opposite sides ot the permanent .sign and there firmly su )ported and held. i
l/ly invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination'ot the various parts of the sign board holder andthe arrangement and combination thereof with the fence post whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims7 and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: i
Figure 1 shows a side elevation ot a device embodying my invention, with part ot one ot the temporary sign boards broken away to show the permanent sign board.
.Figure 2 shows a front elevation of same.
Figure -l shows an enlarged detail view looking downwardly upon one ot the edges of the sign board and showing the perinaneut sign and two temporary signs in position` and V Figure 4l shows a detail perspective view illustrating one of the lower corners of a sign board holder and a portion et permanent sign and two portions oi temporary signs therein to illustrate the means for hold- Y `ordinary way, then fence wires are securred ing the sign boards in the holder.
Referring to the accompanying drawings l have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a metal fence post of ordinarycone struction and preferably provided with an anchor member 11.` This fence post is preter-` ably made of angle bar material. `llear the top ot the tence post is a triangular sheet metal brace member `12.
rl`he sign holder proper is formed of angle bar material and comprises a bottom memare arranged with one iiat side ot the angle bar lylngagainst the outer surface of the brace plate 12 and permanently secured to Additional b y the brace plate by rivets 15. braces'l'of strap iron are provided and are riveted to the side memberslfe and are then` `extended downwardly and' riveted to the post proper.
The device is intended to hold a permanent sheet metal sign 17 and two temporary sheet metal signs 18.y I provide for holding the permanent sign in position by cut-` ting out from the angle bar zlframe of the signholder ai series of lugs 19, which are "ber 13 and two upright members 14, these bent parallel to the `upright portion of thel Y part 18 and the corresponding portion ot the partsll, thusyfforming `a holder for the sheet metal sign between said lugs '19 and the adjacent portion of the angle bar. At the top 1 have provided bolt openings 20Min which may be inserted bolts 21 tor securing the permanent sign in position.
In order to securey the temporary signs l have provided adjacent to the lugs 19 another set ot similar lugs 22 spaced outwardly from the lugs 19 so that one of the temporary signs 18 may be inserted between the sets of lugs 19 `and 22 as shown in Figure 4L. For the other temporary sign board l have formed in the opposite member ot the angle bar a series of lugs 23, those in the bottom member 13 being rst extended outwardly and then upwardly and those in the upright members 14: being extended first outwardly and then toward the vertical center, by this arrangement l provide from a single piece of angle bar material, what might be termed three independent receptacles tor holding three signs properly spaced apart from each other.
In practical use it is obvious that by the arrangement of the sign holder relative to the post and before the sign boards are put in position, the post may be driven in the tween a part ot the angle bar and the lugs 19, then if desired it may be more firmly secured in position by the bolts 21.y It is sometimes desirable to place temporary signs `andA the permanentsign will be unimpaired.
I claim as my invention: g1. An improved road sign comprising a straight post designed to be driven into the ground by blows 'from a mallet on the top i of the post, a sign receiving frame `comprising a straight horizontal bar forming the bottom, said bar being permanently xedto one side of thepost at a pointL spaced below the top of the post, said bar having uprights ati its opposite ends, said frame thus formed being'open at its top `and provided with sign engaging lugs7 and a sign capable of being inserted in the frame Jroin above and securely held in position by `said lugs, and when thus inserted having both sides exposed.
21A device of the class describech: com- 3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a fence post, a triangular .braceplate fixed to one side thereof7 near the top a sign holder formed ot an angle bar seeuredwith its central portions to said brace plate and having a horizontal portion and upwardly extended end portions, Qa brace `fixed to said end portions and to the post, threeseries of lugs iforrned in said holder member, two sets of lugs being designed to coactwith one of the sides of thev angle bar holder to form two channels to receive two sign boards and the third set of lugs being designed to coact with one of the other sets of' lugs to vform a third channel for receiving a third signiboard and said :parts being so arranged that all of the sign boards may be` placed iirtheir respective channels from the top and willfbe heldin the positions parallel to, but'spaced apart from each other, for the purposes stated. 'y e f Des Moines, IowapMay 27th, 1921.
