ELECTRICALLY HEATED UTENSIL.

Patented Dec. 26, I222.
JOSEPH F. LAMB, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T0 LANDEBIS, FRARY &
CLARK, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
ELECTRICALLY-HEATED UTENSIL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. LAMB, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Electrically-Heated Utensil, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionis illustrated as embodied in a wafiie iron and has for its object to provide features of construction having novelty and advantage and some of which are particularly adapted for use in utensils having hinged parts.
In the drawings-Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a wafile iron embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view on enlarged scale with parts broken away to show construction. Fig. 4 is a detailed bottom view on onlarged scale demonstrating the manner of securing the legs in place.
Referring to the drawings :a) denotes the base andb, 6 legs mounted thereon to support the utensil 0. The base is slotted, or otherwise apertured, to receive tongues 3 on the legs which are bent over against the I under side of the base and engaged by the bent over projections 4- formed out of the base. Supported by the legs is the utensil 0 here shown as a waffle iron comprising like parts 5, 5, each of which consists of a shell 10 within which is positioned one section 11 of a wallle iron, provided at its outer edges with depending lugs 12, which fit closely into the shell and are tapped to receive securing screws 13, of which there will preferably be two at. each end and one on each side. To the bottom of the iron section 11 is secured a steel, or other metal plate 14,
which holds the heating element clamped against the bottom of the iron. This plate is,
are smaller than the slots 16. Staples are,
. of course, secured to the parts 5, 5, and permit of slight movement of the two parts relative to one another.
In a hinged structure each part of which carries a heating element it is preferable to have each element independent of the other,
each part being thus provided with the terminal plugs 20, 20.
In order to connect these plugs into the circuit I utilize a conducting wire 25, having a split end and connection plugs 27, 27 being secured to each end. This permits of connecting both plugs to'the parts of the utensil and of separating those parts, as when a waflie iron is open, without breaking the circuit of either part. In order to support the movable part when the iron for instance is open in order to fill or empty it, I provide lateral extensions 35 from one side of each In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the aparatus shown is' only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim as my invention:
1. A wafl'le iron made in two parts connected together with a slip joint, each part comprising a case, a metal section mounted in and secured to said case, a plate secured to the bottom of each metal section and clamped thereon, a heating element "positioned between said metal section and plate. 2. In a wafile iron a base, legs mounted thereon a two part waflie iron one of which parts is mounted on said legs, the other part hinged to the upper edge of the first men tioned part, and means comprising an extension on said legs lying in a plane below the level of the upper edge of said first mem-' tioned part for supporting said hinged part in a horizontal plane when in open position.
3. An electrically heated waflie ironcomposed of two parts each of which comprises a sheet metal case, a wafile iron section closely fitting within each case, a clamping plate secured to the bottom of each iron section and between which and the section a heating element is located, and means in each case engaging its iron section to hold it spaced from the bottomv of prising two parts, means for connecting said parts together comprismg a hinge havlng a.
pair of pivotally connected leaves, each provided with a pair of elongated slots, and staples going throughthe slots in said leaves and connected to said parts, said staples. being smaller than said slots.
5. A waflie 1ron comprising two parts hinged together, an independent heating ele- 10 ment mounted in each part, a pair of termitachable; electrical connections associated with said plugs'of each part and operable to maintain both ofsaid elements in circuit 15 I in any position'of adjustment of said firm.
